Should France Focus on Economy or Social Issues?

Some states in America have adopted more liberal views on "amour" than France. Several states in America have legislated same-sex marriage, while France still maintains the tradition of one man and one woman. France has had a national debate about same-sex marriage, and the country overwhelmingly accepts it, but the government has not yet made it legal -- and won't do so until next year.

France has gained a national consensus on transforming traditional marriage, but has not found consensus on economics. The country suffers high unemployment and a struggling economy. Should France focus its national debate on the economy, austerity, taxes and unemployment? Or are social issues more important than that?

REASON.COM reports:
The European country you probably assumed was already recognizing gay marriage will actually begin recognizing gay marriage (and allow gay couples to adopt) in 2013.

This is a false choice. In the real world, it is not either/or. Governments can and should address both economic issues and social problems.

Only said Social Issue to be contrary and because I don't think it's useful for any country to make this an 'either/or' question... We (and our politicians) should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

The gay population is roughly 10%, of which far less are in a position to and want to be married.

On the other hand a failing economy impacts 100% of the population to some extent.

It isn't a debate as far as im concerned.

Unfortunately the media does more to drive the ins and outs of politics then any other force in existence, and turning an easy fix into such a massive issue means Politicians can divert much of the public attention away from problems they would actually have to work hard to resolve.

Only people who make more than one million a year will pay the new top tax rate. They rarely earn their money only by "going to work".
And the top rate in your country was 91% when Eisenhower was in the WH. Did it destroy your economy?

France just elected a socialist becasue they did not like the austerity measure placed on them by Sarkozy....

France is transitioning from an economy that has featured extensive government ownership and intervention to one that relies more on market mechanisms, but is in the midst of a euro-zone crisis. The government has partially or fully privatized many large companies, banks, and insurers, and has ceded stakes in such leading firms as Air France, France Telecom, Renault, and Thales. It maintains a strong presence in some sectors, particularly power, public transport, and defense industries.

in a nutshell France has stolen everything in its GDP + borrowed against the next 100 years of income and now they are pretending the sky is not falling - I hear China is thinking of bailing them out ....that will be funny ! a lot like when Germany managed the place for a while only with out the USA coming to rescue this time.

I have gained some respect for France's government. Rather than charging in with their own adgenda they are addressing the issues the public finds the most important, and if the mass majority wish it to be the same-sex marriage then so be it. Everywhere in Europe is suffering and there is most likely some plan-making going on behind closed doors.

France has a serious social issue with illegal immigration. It is not just Muslims coming in from the former French colonies in North Africa, but the fact that a lot of them are there illegally.

They need to instill a little work ethic in the young "frogs " that believe they should be given whatever they want. This is why their Government has changed multiple times and the US still has Its Republic style of government.
