Now there is a GREAT thought. Should be mandatory as compensation to humanity for a crime so severe that go them the death sentence. Nice question.

But they may not be able to after the lethal injection stuff.

But it is kind of hard when they are usually killed by lethal injection, which destroys the viability of the organs in question.

..with all those lethal injection poisons floating through the organs? I wish that's where they'd gotten cheney's new heart...

Sure it'd be a great idea, but tell me how would you feel if your doctor told you, "Well sure we got your heart from John Wayne Gacy......"

Whether they choose to or not. The brains should be tossed tho. It didn't serve them well in the first place.

shouldn't be forced...it's their decision, it's their body, even though society has decided they committed crimes that are punishable by death...that doesn't mean society can take his organs

Before them becoming criminals they are someones son, daughter, father, mother, grandfather or grandmother and these relatives deserve at least an ounce of respect for the loved one (no matter how bad) who has brought them enough humiliation by getting murdered (ethical murdering with permission) by making National Headlines. Give them the bodies intact if they so wish to collect them.
On the other hand, think about it, you are killing them lethal injection into the blood stream which means the organs are tainted and Electric Chair, well you kill them in a way by sending shocks through the head causing the nervous system collapse which would short circuit the viability of the organs because of the electrical charge causing vessel rapture.
Moreover, organs at least some of them need to be freshly harvested to be able to make the Donor board. This means hanging would be the only viable option which is considered inhumane,
None the less, I prefer giving them an ounce of respect as they deserve it for just being anothe living being on this planet with a right to live that was snatched away.

It would be a better way to pay back society. They should go straight to organ donation and bypass jail.

Sounds like a great idea, if they can save people's lives and make the best of their situation they can actually give something back to the society they have wronged.

As nice as the idea sounds, I'd prefer to not have an inmate's organs. They are much more likely to be contaminated by drugs, or be damaged by lethal injection or other methods of killing the inmate.

of course, they have human bodies and organs just like the rest of us, I can't see why it would be a problem.

Anyone can willingly donate their organs, and that's how it should remain. It should never be mandatory.

First you'd have to convince me they hadn't been 'spoiled' by electrocution/lethal injection/gas chamber, etc.

Live organ harvesting should be made part of the sentencing. This may act as a crime deterrent.
