Should College Be a Constitutional Right?

We all know student loans can be killer. And though Congress recently announced a tentative deal that would prevent student loan rates from doubling, according to a recent poll, that's still not enough for the average American.

A national poll done by the Carnegie Corporation of New York found that most Americans (76 percent) believe that access to higher education should be a constitutional right. Additionally, 67 percent believe that the cost of college is the biggest barrier to that access. It's a controversial issue, but it has to be asked: Do you think easier access to college should be a constitutional right for all Americans?

GOOD.IS reports:
A deeply divided Congress gives us little hope, but 150 years ago an equally partisan climate produced some of the nation's top public universities.

Have you ever been to any major university and seen the gymnasiums, dorms, architecture and materials of new buildings, stadiums, etc, they are all competing for students and the government has created an anomaly where cost is not nearly as important as if they had to get standard loans or pay cash.

Why not? Everyone should be given the chance to attend college. Not everyone makes a substantial enough salary to afford the high cost of tuition. Hell, I'm still paying for graduate school student loans.

Student loans are available to everyone. They could always avoid the debt by working their way through college, living at home, starting at a community college, an then transferring to a state college. They choose the debt. How the hell is that anyone else's fault? Why should others have to pay for their choice? The main reason college has become so expensive is because all people have to do is sign on the line for student loans. Universities have become resorts work elaborate buildings, gymnasiums that are like water parks or spas, and on and on. Nobody is entitled to anything. They can earn it like anyone else. Look what the federal government has done to our K-12 education. It is pathetic. People graduate that can't even read.

There are too many educated "idiots" already. Too many young adults who think that going on to further their "education" will insure that they get a job making 20 times what they are worth. There should be more tech and trade schools that people can choose to attend. But as a Constitutional Right - how about just another one of the freedoms that US citizens have been afforded for the past 4 centuries.

What the percentage of black voters thought and still think. And those smart black voters - you know this is true.

Woe to those blacks who have minds and can think and understand reality. This is part of the reason so many non-blacks get so frustrated at the black community. Those with good sense are told to shut-up and those like this woman have their ramblings promoted so that other non-thinking blacks hopefully will buy into it.

If you want it changed, don't let the liberals and democrats keep you dumb and dependent.

No, but it should be affordable. Those of us who have Veterans Administration educational benefits are fortunate, but there are a lot of worthy people who will never go to college due to the obscene cost of a 48 month college education. I'm afraid that colleges are falling into the economic model of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry where market forces have no effect on cost other than to inflate them. The reasons are due to inflated insurance premiums on the one hand, and overly generous student loans on the other. Ultimately, somebody has to pay for the inflated costs, usually by government mandate. If only there was a way to make them more competitive and affordable through honest competition.

Some colleges are good, but too many are not there to educate you to be prepared or qualified for a job in a particular field; they are there to indoctrinate tomorrow's adults.

Education is key to attacking ignorance at the point. Conscious is another that should be considered when going through other changes through that time. Also try to map out a plan to save yourself some money when looking for classes to take for a major. I have been lucky to avoid taking out loans so far. A plan will help the student go farther than one who does not know where to begin.

Why dones't Dagon sound American... or Christian?
Being an American doesn't mean that we roll over and let those who WANT take from those who EARN. And I don't think that even Christ would recommend people attend today's unGodly colleges and universities. God doesn't expect us to be publically educated, but will give us the knowledge we need to do what He calls us to do.

It should definitely be cheaper, but no, not everyone can or needs to go to college. What I wish would happen is that colleges would start accepting students on the basis of their educational merits and work ethic, not how much money they have or are willing to borrow. Colleges got greedy and will now accept almost anyone, it seems, as long as they're willing to pay huge bucks (or use someone else's money to do so). As a result, a degree is going to mean little more than "I had some money when I was 18."

I wish colleges were truthful with high school youth and explain that their chances of getting a job with a BS in Deciphering Sticky Notes Layouts is not going to be a high demand job and probably not pay enough to regain your education costs.

Yeah, that too. But unfortunately it's all about the money for the college. They don't care if you get a job or not as long as you go to their school as long as possible.

If you want a higher education you need to earn it, either academically or through work and student loans/grants.
That said, the cost of a higher education is outrageous, and there needs to be some sort of regulation.

If higher education is a luxury, than why does the government need to regulate it :P Since it's nonessential to our basic rights and needs, why can't they charge whatever they wish? Why not make it a million dollars, so that only millionaires can be educated. Is it because the prices are now starting to effect those that had enough money to go to college before? Indeed.

Lots of things are regulated that are not part of our basic rights or needs.

Why not pay for your own HIGHER education? The American taxpayer should not have to subsidize your pursuit of happiness. If a higher education will make you happy, get one....but pay for it yourself!

Education is a basic need/right, as you are required/obligated to have it in order to have a job in our economy.

A higher education is REQUIRED/NEEDED through an OBLIGATORY monetary means. I would gladly pay/use a library for my own education if there was a self-learning avenue which wouldn't REQUIRE me to go through the COLLEGE SYSTEM which DICTATES my personal FREEDOMS. I would be more than happy to LEARN on my own, and obtain my degree through LIKEWISE channels. Is there such an obtain? No, therefore it is INFRINGING on my CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. There is no option which is outside of the college system and which doesn't require exuberant amounts of cash.

Now you talk about a lot of things are regulated that are NOT part of our basic rights, yet this IS.
Why not pay 80,000 dollars like a hostage for my future which shouldn't come at a price-tag at all because its a basic REQUIREMENT for LIFE. Do I have to pay for my right to speak? My right to have a fair trail? My right to freedom of expression? What? Suddenly freedoms are only freedoms and rights are only constitutional rights when they don't involve money? That's absurd. The price-tag college places on our future is profuse and outlandish. What's more, there shouldn't be any price tag on it at all as knowledge is a basic...

History has shown that withholding education to people based on whatever means has always been used for oppression and subjugation. Therefore, supporting such a thing goes against our foundation and constitution as it stands. Moreover, since trails are long and costly, and a fair trial even more so. Should that negate a person's right, who can't afford it, to have a fair trail? No. Yet, by your logic, a defendant would need money in order to enact his fair trail, as it is HIS TRAIL. Absurd? I think so.
