But you might want to check their parents for mental retardation - why the hell do people allow their kids to eat such awful things!? With the resurgence of Farmer's Markets there is simply no excuse - aside from laziness - to account for this country's deplorable Health.

Yes if that is part of the physical requested by the parent or legal guardian from the doctor for the child. Doctors shouldn't take it upon themselves to do any tests that aren't requested or part of the routine physical.

Some children might need it with the food they're being fed these days.

If there is a family history or other health problems, then there may be a valid reason to do so. If it's just a general well being concern, it's a preposterous idea.

The fact that we're debating about this is a telling sign that something is horribly wrong.

Unless there are specific risk factors. Since food consumption is a minor contributor to cholesterol levels in most cases, this seems like some of the obesity paranoia.

Here's an idea-why don't we stop feeding them cholesterol to begin with? The way we feed our kids borders on abuse.

I think that would depend on their weight, and if they had hypertension. The reason I said weight is, if they were considered to be obese at 9 you would have to consider their eating habits, and the amount of activity their getting. When I was a kid we didn't have video games, cell phones and there wasn't much on TV, so if it wasn't storming out we would all be playing outside all day, everyday. You couldn't gain weight because you were too active. I was like a monkey, constantly climbing tress and running around. Then we were either swimming, playing baseball, basketball, Frisbee and riding our bikes, we had a very active, and fun childhood.

It might be useful to do that in schools, like vaccination and other checks.

If that's what a parent wants to do, go ahead. It's none of my business. If it was mandated that all parents do it, I'd be against it.

Just ensure that they eat foods that elevate the HDL (good) cholesterol to prevent inflammation in the arteries. Without inflammation, what plaque does form will have little foothold and be washed away. Apples, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, salmon, albacore tuna and especially olive oil are all HDL boosters.

As long as fast food is part of a regular diet, and schools serve pizza and take the physical education programs out, yes, it is essential!

I really don't see what would be wrong with it. The schools now days haven't had the best of menus, now before you jump on me, I know that more and more and are jumping on the healthy eating band wagon. Since everyone seems to be eating out more wouldn't it be good to find out how it's affecting them and get the ones that are high help on better eating habits?

There is more emphasis on better nutrition and diet for all Americans. I suggest watching Dr. Oz if they can. He has a lot of useful information for all of us. If we eat better food when we are young, perhaps there won't be as many adults with heart disease and diabetes.

I remember read about young Viet Nam soldiers killed on duty that when autopsied were found to have the early signs of cholesterol related problems.

It can be done by a blood test, so what's the big deal?

Except... if all docs are going to do is ram pills down their throats, fuggedaboudit. :)

We don't need to start making them into hypochondriacs obsessed with their health all the time. Already most people are, running to the doctor for millions of tests that show absolutely nothing. It's silly. People are already way too obsessed with health issues.

And if you got talk to people in hospitals and nursing homes, you would find a lot saying they wish they knew when they were younger this was going to happen and maybe they could've done something to change the out come!

That is between the doctor and the child's parents or guardians. What may be great for one, may be a needless expenditure for another. One size fits all works better for baseball caps than people.

Why is Cholesterol such a big deal for young people? Are the pharmaceutical companies that desperate?
