Should Child Circumcision Be Allowed?

Circumcision has been a religious tradition for many years, but has often been the subject of controversy because of the effect it could potentially have on children. On Tuesday, a German court ruled that child circumcision can be classified as "grievous bodily harm." The issue went to court when a 4-year-old boy began bleeding profusely as the result of a circumcision. Naturally, religious communities that practice circumcision are upset.

The court ruled, "[The] fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents ... The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised."

In response, the head of the Central Committee of Jews said the ruling is "an unprecedented and dramatic intervention in the right of religious communities to self-determination ... [an] outrageous and insensitive act. Circumcision of newborn boys is a fixed part of the Jewish religion and has been practiced worldwide for centuries."

You have obviously never been around a baby boy being circumcised. I am pretty sure the screaming and being hard to comfort isn't just for a mood setting.

its like this....you want to make your own choices in life, right? a baby should be able to make their own choices when they are older.

It shouldn't be the parents choice to do this anymore than it should be to get their babies tattooed, or their hands removed because you know fingernails carry so many germs. Its one of the few barbaric things parents can legally get away with doing to their infant boys and it's disgusting.

Personally I would not circumcise but at the same time that is the choice of the parents no matter how I feel about it. I explain better here:

Something like this that can not be replaced should only be left up to the person getting it done. I definitely believe in parents rights but not to the extent of something irreversible and the so called benefits are debatable. No matter who or what institution says otherwise, thinking boys were born flawed is illogical.

Also, women who have commented that a man's circumcised is more attractive than an intact penis makes me wonder what their reaction would be to someone who suggested they would be more attractive with implants and a facelift. I actually prefer a natural, intact penis myself but I have not found a tactful way of finding that out until it is too late! Luckily I married an intact man. Somehow we have made it this far in life without the many cancers, STDs, and UTIs everyone tries to use as an excuse for baby boy butchering.

Circumcision is not only "grievous bodily harm" but torture of a helpless person. It should, along with female sexual mutilation, be treated as a high crime.

i was already cut at birth tyvm. and i am glad i was. and what is this sexual mutilation crap your talking about? and i wasn't harmed btw. and torture, yeah right,i don't even remember the procedure. i love how people exaggerate.

I was not cut at birth. Fortunately, baby memories don't last, as in your case. My brother had the proceedure when he was born and related to me he had sexual problems because of lack of sensitivity in his penis. And I do not exaggerate.

Circumcision is a irreversible unnecessary surgery that harms people for the rest of their lives, emotionally, and in bed. I wish I could kill the horrible doctor that cut my foreskin and get it back.

It is forced when it is done as an infant. The infant doesn't usually get much choice in the matter.

yes but at that age ur parents have the right to do what they want with their baby.
its nothing harmfull, its actually hygienic, so i personally dont see anything wrong with it.
getting a babies ears pierced leaves more mark than this, and people do that all the time.

I am not OK with getting babies ears pieced either, but at least it doesn't involve cutting off 20,000 Meissner's corpuscles (fine touch) nerve endings.

Oh yeah? Try cutting off your baby's arm if you think you get to do what you want with your own baby. Society will have something to say about that.
