Should Child Circumcision Be Allowed?

Circumcision has been a religious tradition for many years, but has often been the subject of controversy because of the effect it could potentially have on children. On Tuesday, a German court ruled that child circumcision can be classified as "grievous bodily harm." The issue went to court when a 4-year-old boy began bleeding profusely as the result of a circumcision. Naturally, religious communities that practice circumcision are upset.

The court ruled, "[The] fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents ... The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised."

In response, the head of the Central Committee of Jews said the ruling is "an unprecedented and dramatic intervention in the right of religious communities to self-determination ... [an] outrageous and insensitive act. Circumcision of newborn boys is a fixed part of the Jewish religion and has been practiced worldwide for centuries."

Baby have the right, like any other human, of body integrity

It is forced when it is done as an infant. The infant doesn't usually get much choice in the matter.

yes but at that age ur parents have the right to do what they want with their baby.
its nothing harmfull, its actually hygienic, so i personally dont see anything wrong with it.
getting a babies ears pierced leaves more mark than this, and people do that all the time.

I am not OK with getting babies ears pieced either, but at least it doesn't involve cutting off 20,000 Meissner's corpuscles (fine touch) nerve endings.

Oh yeah? Try cutting off your baby's arm if you think you get to do what you want with your own baby. Society will have something to say about that.

Your claiming it's hygienic doesn't make it so. Parents should not have the right to mame or dismember their infant or child under any circumstances. Comparing ear piercing a baby (which I am also against) to removing skin from a boys penis is very far fetched. Boys are born with the perfect penis. Why do parents think they can improve on God's perfection?
  • Monty Oblahblah 2013/04/05 02:59:34

now people are using the word "dismember" for circumcisions??? stop making it sound so much more dramatic then it really is.

Really? So I can punch my baby in the head? Punt it across the room? Get it tattooed? Why not, it's my kid and I'll do whatever I want to it. Awesome logic.

better it happens then instead of when the infant becomes an old man and can't properly care for himself.

And not just for its religious freedoms but for the health implications as well. Yes, it hurts, but I had a firend who had it done later in life and he probably had it worse than simply getting it done as a newborn since recall is far better then. (Although there is a school of thought that contends this is why men are so careful in that particular region)

At least your friend had the choice to do it later in life. A lot of American boys don't get an option as to whether they want to have this done. Everyone should have the option to make an informed decision at an age appropriate time.

having your own choices isn't always good. and i'm sure there are PLENTY of men that were glad they were cut at birth. and i bet the far outnumber then men who aren't glad they were.

honestly, think about it. circumcision has little to no medical benefit and its always done to babies who can't/DON'T have the mental capacity to say "no, i don't want the skin covering my penis cut off just because my PARENTS think it looks more attractive." Removing the foreskin of a guy's dick is the same as removing a girl's clit, and i know NO female would be down with their clit being removed. lmao. Its hard to think about if you've only ever had foreskin for the 1st 2 days of ur life, but from what i hear, uncircumcised guys got it made. Sex is like, mindblowing... Aside from religious reasons, its only done for vanity purposes. And that infant cant verbally say if that's how he wants HIS dick to look 4 the rest of his life. I mean 4 real, think about it guys, whether ur circumcised or not, if someone came up to you today, right now and said, "would u like part of ur dick cut off? it'll still work and everything, but all the cool guys r doing it. girls (or guys) like it better this way" would u say, "yeah, sure. put those scissors towards my dick" or would u deck them in the face? Personally, I'd choose option number 2.... lol

I'd have to disagree that removing the foreskin is equivalent to removing the clitoris. The foreskin has very little nerves and does not necessarily change the sensitivity of the head of the penis, whereas removing the clitoris would be removing the primary organ which is responsible for orgasm in women. The clitoris is packed with over 6000 nerve endings whereas the foreskin has hardly any excpet the normal amount in skin tissue. Removing the clitoris would be more analagous to removing the head of the penis where the majority of the nerve endings are in the penis.

The foreskin has 20,000 to 40,000 nerves. Did you know that in the womb, you develop as a female first? As development continues, the clitoris because the penis and the clitoral hood because the foreskin. The ovaries become the testes. The clitoral hood and the foreskin are in fact homologous organs.

tru, the foreskin has no where near as many nerve endings as the clitioris, but keeping the foreskin intact makes the head of the penis more sensitive. so.... my apologies, a better analogous comparison would be, removing the foreskin would be the equivalent of somehow exposing the clit all the time, therefore making it less sensitive. still works, still has all the nerve endings, but since its exposed all the time, its less sensitive. any dude, myself included, without his foreskin has less sensation than the guys that do.
