Should Child Circumcision Be Allowed?

Circumcision has been a religious tradition for many years, but has often been the subject of controversy because of the effect it could potentially have on children. On Tuesday, a German court ruled that child circumcision can be classified as "grievous bodily harm." The issue went to court when a 4-year-old boy began bleeding profusely as the result of a circumcision. Naturally, religious communities that practice circumcision are upset.

The court ruled, "[The] fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents ... The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised."

In response, the head of the Central Committee of Jews said the ruling is "an unprecedented and dramatic intervention in the right of religious communities to self-determination ... [an] outrageous and insensitive act. Circumcision of newborn boys is a fixed part of the Jewish religion and has been practiced worldwide for centuries."

Circumcision actually has little to no benefits and if you actually look it up yourself you can easily read that. Why do you think doctors don't recommend it anymore? It's a barbaric practice that removes a protective layer that contains sensitive nerve endings from your penis. It is not meant to be done!

Anti-circumcision doctors. There are proponent doctors that have released information on medical benefits, which SOME choose to ignore at the detriment to children and their later partners.

There were news stories and countless studies. This is very old news, and there is nothing you can say that will convince me otherwise. You are unnecessarily removing a functioning body part from a unwilling child. It has nerves and plays a vital roll in protecting your penis and giving sexual pleasure. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT A FRENULUM IS AND HOW SENSITIVE IT IS AND WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE IT GOES THROUGH FROM CIRCUMCISION! Not even mentioning the rubbing and drying of the glans itself! Its an outdated barbaric practice and it needs to stop! Why dont we preemptively remove childrens appendix. I bet they will notice that less than being missing their foreskin!

There's no damage unless you have a bad doctor. Which is among the most rare in the medical industry. Parents make a lot of decisions for children because it's their responsibility to care for them, including stuff like vaccinations. The benefits far outway the rare bad doctors that exist by a long shot. I wouldn't want to put a child in danger or make them have to suffer later in life because of some leftist cutcases. It's a lot harder, too, to get it later in life. The younger you are, the quicker it heals and the less painful it is. Same people that would send CPC after a parent who wouldn't give their child a blood transfusion for religious reasons, because their child is overweight, or the parent refuses to teach the child homosexuality is natural and healthy (which it isn't), or who would abort a baby, tells a stranger they can't have a flap of skin covering their babies private parts trimmed to prevent disease, cancer and other complications. Sexual pleasure is retained. There is evidence of this everywhere.

Yes, but none of the medical reasons hold up under scrutiny. If keeping your foreskin was so detrimental, Europe would be experiencing some kind of epidemic. News flash: they're not.

Ask my sister about the medical reasons holding up under scrutiny. She fought infections off and on for 25 years with her ex. Other women have had similar complaints. I'll just say this, It is the parent's responsibility and choice at birth, if the child resents it later in life, he can tell his parents about it. Then when he has a son, he can decide to leave his son uncircumcised and that son can tell him about how unnecessary foreskin actually is after he grows up. It's a personal choice that should always be left to the parents, and the kids can complain later if they want to. I NEVER complained to my parents, and I'm 58 now, I was and still am glad that they decided to have it done for me. THANKS MOM AND DAD, I LOVE YOU!!!!

You're pulling that out of your ass or you were lied to because if it was that bad there would be a world wide epidemic. You do realize that the USA is one of the few nations that still does it regularly right?

For those saying that you should wait till they get old enough to decide for themselves, well, the problem is that its more dangerous and painful to do as you grow older. And while I'm perfectly happy not having been circumcised myself, I have to admit there are well known benefits to it. Plus, I haven't heard anyone complain about it being done to them without their permission (though I'm sure it has happened). It doesn't seem like it has a noticeable enough effect on a persons life to ban.

a parent deciding whether or not their child should get a circumcision...

    for medical reasons, yes, absolutely.
for ANY other reason, no, not really.

Only because I believe that the right to life free from harm is more important then religious freedom, I think that once the child is old enough to give consent they can make the choice for themselves.

However important it may be to people of jewish faith, circumcision is not a sacrament, unlike a Christian baptism. Circumcision does not affect a Jew's Jewish status. A Jew by birth is a full Jew, even if not circumcised.
and as far as i know there is no real rule based on WHEN the boy must be circumcised, (for medical reasons it is 8 days after birth, but I am sure that for medical reasons that this can be subject to change).

Were you EVER a child? At what age would you decide to go to the hospital and have a doctor WHACK part of your personals off. Very few, if any, children will decide to lay on a table and get cut, even knowing that it is for their own good. What world do you live in? I lost my eye when I was 8 and it took my folks, the doctor, and three nurses to give me the first shot, let alone an added two nurses getting me into the operating room to have my eye cut out. If they had mentioned cutting down there, I would have left home.

Since then, I have had several NEEDED surgeries due to accidents, but If my folks didn't have it done, I wouldn't of had it done any time in my life. I did have a 'snip-snip' because we had 3 boys and that was enough!!!! YOU must be nuts.

P.S. All three of my sons were circumcised at birth, and they all thank me, now that they are in their 20's.

What's your stand on abortion? I suppose if the mother decides she doesn't want a baby tagging along to her next lover's house, it's ok for her to chuck the kid like she did the last 6 she would have had? But that's not mutilation, that's different.

There is no medical reason for unnecessary circumcision, only really a religious/personal reasons, the age of consent is 18 not 8.

What on earth would they thank you for, saving them from their genitals working like and looking like most healthy civilized men in the world? What did you do for them? And what does abortion have to do with circumcision? If someone told you they believed in abortion, but was against children smoking what difference would it make about whether smoking was bad for a child. You took a long shot gamble and can't prove you got anything to show for it. My son thanked me, when the issue came up. I told him no need to thank me, I didn't do a thing.

    You're joking, right?

    Genesis 17:10-14

10 This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants. 13 A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

Circumcision is a fundamental part of the practice of Judaism.

About 2300 years ago, the Greeks conquered the Holy Land, and tried to prohibit circumsision, amongst other Jewish practices.

A group of Jews called the Maccabees successfully revolted, and we celebrate their victory in the holiday of Hannukkah.

Hannukkah is a celebration of all things Jewish, among them, circumcision.

  • Jiorgia Playerazzi 2012/07/02 07:18:03

Sacrament is something that if you do not adhere to you cannot be a member of that religion/go to heaven, a covenant is a vow or a promise.
Circumcision is a covenant with god (judaism), baptism is sacrament (Christianity).

If a Jew is not circumcised, he is חייב כרת , which means he receives a heavenly punishement that he will die before his time, or he will have no descendents. There are other things he is excluded from - like the Paschal lamb offering (we don't do the sacrifice today, but it's still a blemish). He's kind of a second-class Jew. A (male) convert *must* get circumcised, otherwise his conversion is invalid.

In short, it's a very very basic part of Judaism. To prohibit circumcision for Jews would be an act of war on Judaism.

There are fundamental Jews much like there are fundamental Christians.
The results of this poll show that even 20% of Jews think that child circumcision should be banned.

Let the child decide when it's old enough, it's his body and integrity. It does not make him a lesser person and it has nothing to do with being close to God. And with todays hygienics, cleanliness is not a main argument anymore.

You are comparing circumcision with vaccination programs? I'm not circumcized and it has never been or could have been a threat to my health. With vaccination it's a completely different story. I think circumcision has much more meaning when it's done as a free choice. If I had married a Jewish girl, I would have done it. Out of respect and love.
