Should Child Circumcision Be Allowed?

Circumcision has been a religious tradition for many years, but has often been the subject of controversy because of the effect it could potentially have on children. On Tuesday, a German court ruled that child circumcision can be classified as "grievous bodily harm." The issue went to court when a 4-year-old boy began bleeding profusely as the result of a circumcision. Naturally, religious communities that practice circumcision are upset.

The court ruled, "[The] fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents ... The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised."

In response, the head of the Central Committee of Jews said the ruling is "an unprecedented and dramatic intervention in the right of religious communities to self-determination ... [an] outrageous and insensitive act. Circumcision of newborn boys is a fixed part of the Jewish religion and has been practiced worldwide for centuries."

Amen!!!!! can you believe these people who feel it is their RIGHT and their JOB to make decisions for what is best to YOUR kids? Amazing.

I know. I didn't realize it was such a controversial subject. They'll never change my mind on the procedure, because we felt like we made the best decision for our boys! If they don't agree with it, then don't choose that for your child, simple as that!

This would do your sons no good if they don't like it. It is not your penis, and from a human rights perspective it is not your choice. It is a faulty decision you made for someone else.

When I say 'they' I'm referring to people who don't agree with it. And yes, it basically is/was my choice. Just like it is YOUR choice not to have the procedure on your children. It was the right decision and we'll continue to make decisions for our children, just as you will for your children.

You don't get it! It is not your choice to allow a some adult to sexually assault your son. Keep in mind many who do this for a profession get a sexual charge out of it as it is often a form of pedophilia currently immune from prosecution!

Shame you are unable to see the point. You are a product of cultural conditioning just like those are in an Islamic country that practices female circumcision.

Ah to be so young. I am a bit older than you and have seen how attitudes have changed towards Circumcision. I think you are old enough to have been subjected to it in America. If this poll was taken when you were 10, the numbers probably would be reversed.
  • joy.g.r... ehrhornp 2012/06/29 23:12:18
    joy.g.russell
Well that makes no sense because the numbers weren't taken 27 years ago, they were taken today and 56% are against it, so although not a scientific study, this shows that most in the culture don't agree with it. But I'm not debating whether it should be done, because we've already chosen to do so twice!

Shame you don't understand trends. When I was young just about 100% were subject to it. Today that number is way down. One of the reasons for having it when I was young was that the kid would fit in. Today, the circumcised male might be less likely to fit in.
  • joy.g.r... ehrhornp 2012/06/29 23:44:03
    joy.g.russell
It's a shame you don't understand there is more than one way of doing things! I assure you my children will fit in with their peers when they are older, something like a little extra skin being removed will not make them outcasts. Im a teacher and have taught several different age levels; including junior high and high school and have never heard that to be an issue of discussion. I have friends I've heard discuss how gross it is, and a total turn off when they come upon someone who is not circumcised and how unclean it is. My doctors also advised on the cleanliness of it and I will listen to them over people like you any day.
  • marty joy.g.r... 2012/07/06 16:48:38
    marty
So reverse that to "something like HAVING little extra skin won't make them outcasts. Talking about their penises in public tends to be a taboo for any boy. The teacher typically doesn't give a flake about their students' covered appearances, but other kids will find commonalities or differences regardless.
About doctors: different doctors say different things and one may have sound advice about treating colds and allergies but may have limited judgement with mental conditions.
  • joy.g.r... ehrhornp 2012/06/29 23:46:26
    joy.g.russell
And just because it may be a trend doesn't mean I agree with it. I'm an adult and can think for myself and make decisions regardless of what a majority may think. A trend doesn't make it right, shame on you for not knowing that about trends. I'd think you'd be old enough to know that.

well it won't be me having to explain why the decision was made to chop off the top of your sons penis. I didn't have to face this decision as I had a daughter. One should at least understand the history of it and the reasons behind it.

I take it you are referring to female friends? More of cultural conditioning. Shame as a teacher you don't know about this. My teachers did when I was growing up.
  • joy.g.r... ehrhornp 2012/06/30 00:44:28
    joy.g.russell
Now you're lying, because I know none of your teachers ever had a conversation with you about circumcision and if they did, you have bigger issues than whether an infant boy should be circumcised or not. I do know about this and know we, as parents, made the right decision. And I'm pretty sure I'll never have to explain to them why the sagging skin around their penis ( not the top of their penis) was removed. My husband was circumcised and has never thought differently of it. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make or break a person. And you keep referring to cultural conditioning, im pretty sure you are a product of your culture to some extent unless you live on a desolate island where you set the cultural standard. And in this case you're the one who's definitely gone with the trend/ cultural conditioning since you agree with the majority! And that term is getting redundant!

lol, you misunderstood. I was talking about cultural conditioning where many aspects of society are the result of such cultural conditioning. Not easy to break but as seen by circumcision can be done over time.

Actually I think circumcision was covered in our sex education class. (Just a few years ago.) Now it didn't mention the reasons for it but I think there was some discussion of it.

As I have said when I grew up most everyone was circumcised. I suspect in another 40 years the vast majority will not be.

If my child knew about it he would concurr mainly for health reasons. For the rest of his life he will have one less thing to worry about. Not only is it a religious thing most drs. recommend it as well. Check it out and find out for yourself.

Most doctors DON'T reccomend it. No medical association in the world reccomends it. FACT.
I could chop off a newborns arms. It wouldn't be an issue, it'd be all they ever knew. They'd never break them, get fungal infections under their finger nails or hurt them. Plus, one less thing to wash. However, that doesn't justify it.

I have three children and none of their doctors ever counciled us or even gave us the option of chopping off their arms, so it's not even comparable. We didn't have their penises cut off, just the extra skin around it.

And, like I've stated, would do the same thing again if faced with that decision. Our doctor didn't say it was what we should have done, but he did not discourage us either.

But it isn't "extra" skin. It is the skin, muscle nerve endings etc that is SUPPOSED to be there. It is not anything that boys born without a birth defect don't have at birth as well.

*It is not ANY parents right to mutilate their children, male or female. Jewish or Muslim.
*It is not harder to keep clean...If you are an extra dirty person then you are just dirty...cut or not. Do you think of German men as dirty? How about Japanese men? Not hardly!
*It is NOT healthier... (in fact men in countries where they don't do it are much healthier than Americans)
*It is QUICKLY going out of style. In fact it already IS out of style.
Mutilating your baby is SO not cool!
*Medicaid does not cover it in 18 states...and counting. Because it is NOT medically necessary.
*And ....sorry guys...it does NOT make your penis any bigger as the guy below said..it makes it SMALLER AND you feel sex much less because nerves get damaged and you do not get the pleasure of the foreskin moving back and forth.

If it is a personal choice, it is not up to YOU to choose for someone else. Let the child choose when he is old enough to understand the consequences - which are most severe.

Sorry Rod by making a statement like that tells me you don't have a clue what it's all about. This is not a procedure for an adult unless he wants to do it for med reasons. A 7 day old child (when it's done) has very little if ay disconfort I assure you.
