Should Child Circumcision Be Allowed?

Circumcision has been a religious tradition for many years, but has often been the subject of controversy because of the effect it could potentially have on children. On Tuesday, a German court ruled that child circumcision can be classified as "grievous bodily harm." The issue went to court when a 4-year-old boy began bleeding profusely as the result of a circumcision. Naturally, religious communities that practice circumcision are upset.

The court ruled, "[The] fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents ... The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised."

In response, the head of the Central Committee of Jews said the ruling is "an unprecedented and dramatic intervention in the right of religious communities to self-determination ... [an] outrageous and insensitive act. Circumcision of newborn boys is a fixed part of the Jewish religion and has been practiced worldwide for centuries."

Yeah, lets let parents cut off their child's ears, too! Hell, why not their arms! Ooh, ooh, how about we just let them kill their children! Sounds great, right?

Because cutting up a childs genitals is seriously wrong. At the very least a law or several laws should be cropped up to say the person male or female should be of consenting age before any religious cultural body modification or ceremony can be done. That way at the very least the man or woman can choose to have the procedure done for their religion/tradition/culture or choose not. What's so hard to understand about that?

I don't believe that anyone who isn't Jewish or Muslim and isn't commanded by their religion to circumcise their infant son to do so. That said, being Jewish we are commaneded by Torah to circumcise our son's when they are exactly 8 days old. Interestingly, at 8 days the level of vitamin K is at a peak in the infants bloodstream, which helps with clotting. Brit Milah (circumcision) is the most important mitzvah (commandment) and is at the heart and soul of our faith. You cannot be a Jew if you haven't been circumcized. To ban circumcision for Jews is ludicrous, it is anti-semitic and will only serve to drive the practice underground and potentially make it very dangerous for the infants at that point. If you don't want to do it . . . and you aren't Jewish . . . then DON"T! But leave us to our own beliefs and we will leave you to yours.

This is a human rights issue. Are you saying Jews are born with inferior human rights? I find that extremely anti-semitic. Maimonides explained the real reason its done on the 8th day. It's because the parents don't love their children enough at that point to protect them from it yet. Look it up. That's why.

Are you Jewish? If you aren't that would explain why you don't understand the importance of Brit Milah. If you are Jewish you need to talk to an Orthodox Rabbi to learn why it is imperative for a child to be circumcised. My son was circumcised, and my grandson was circumcised. My grandson's Brit Milah was done at home with a moyal who was an M.D. and a urologist. He used a local anesthetic, the result being that my grandson slept through the procedure and there was no bleeding at all. So I don't think it's the "barbaric, painful procedure" that you and other's are protesting. Once again, if you personally don't believe in it fine, don't do it in your family. But don't interfere with the rights of those of us who believe it is an integral part of our Jewish religious practice. It's not your business to do that. My religious rights and that of other observant Jews is also a human rights issue, and our children are our business not yours or anyone elses.

A persons religion ends where another persons body begins....and even Jewish groups understand this and are working hard to stop infant circumcision. Jews Against Circumcision and Beyond the Bris are two very active Jewish organizations that understand the harm of circumcision and promote a peaceful welcoming ceremony for baby boys and girls called Brit Shalom, which does NOT include genital cutting on infants. Go ahead and check them out!!!!!!!!

Please see my statement above, I surely hope that all the left-wing Jewish activists who are trying to outlaw Brit Milah don't succeed. You are all ignorant of Jewish law and why Brit Milah is central to our faith as Jews. It has been done for thousands of years and G-d willing Hashem will make sure that His covenant will continue to be observed.

Religion DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CUT OFF PARTS OF LITTLE CHILDREN'S GENITALS! IT ISN'T ANTI-SEMITIC. Germany has caught on. Circumcision is barbaric. Luckily the practice is dieing out and luckily, some countries are even outlawing it now.

studies revealed a 60% decrease in HIV transmission in circumcised males compared to uncircumcised males..incidence of urinary tract infections in male infants appears to be lower when circumcision is done in the newborn period. It was first reported in 1982 that urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more common among infant males than they are in infant females (this switches later on in life). In this study, it was revealed that about 95% of the infected infant boys had not been circumcised. This risk is especially significant in infants less than 1 year of age. Many studies have shown that uncircumcised infants have a tenfold increased risk of developing a UTI than circumcised infants...Circumcision prevents the growth of bacteria under the foreskin and this, in turn, protects male infants against urinary tract infection. The high incidence of urinary tract infections in uncircumcised boys has also been found to be accompanied by an increased incidence of other significant infections such as bacteremia (bacterial infection of the bloodstream) and meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain). The protective effect of circumcision may thus extend to a number of infectious diseases. Ok SO YEAH I'M FOR CIRCUMCISION..in fact..VIVA CIRCUMCISION..YAY FOR CIRCUMCISION!

That's a flawed study. In 1982 parents were told to pull back their infants sons' foreskins to clean under. THAT caused an entry way for infections. If left alone, the foreskin actually PREVENTS infection, especially in babies.

Loll yeah well you can not clean under it..but I have a feeling that you might have to get circumcised as an adult because your forskin will fuse to the head and inflame..then you wont be able to pull it back at all..then what do you think they will have to do?..Google image search "inflamed foreskin"..I don't want to get banned for posting a medical image but go check it out..tell me what you think..

Seems like a bad reason to have a surgical procedure done on your privates. Wonder if any women thought of cutting up part of their genitals so its "easier to clean"?

Unlike the last generation this generation of Americans have the internet at their disposal, use it to learn about the procedure before you have any children (males in this case).

Moron, female genital mutilation is worse and this zip see is one baby step to getting this practice illegal to do against a child before it is old enough by standards of its born country to give or not give consent. Lets hope you realise mutilation for tradition is everybody's business unless full adult consent has been given.

I hate to break it to you....but the only penis that belongs to you is your own!!!!! We are mothers, grandmothers, wives and sisters, so yes, we care about genital integrity....it's about human rights and how cutting the genitals of an infant violates those rights.

Right, our son's penis does not belong to us. It also does not belong to the father or anyone else. It belongs to the boy that the penis is attached to. This is why my son is intact. No my body, not my choice to alter.

You saw the result of premature forced retraction, commonly done in the US and very harmful. Ask a nurse in China about all the problems with intact men. Or a nurse in Finland or most any European country.

One of the reasons it's done in infancy is that it is an easier procedure, and you totally don't remember having it done. To have it done later in life is traumatic and the recovery time is longer and more painful than when done in infancy. The trouble with this topic, is there's too many meshuga people on here that totally don't get that this is a central tenet of Judaism and that Jewish parents do have the right to choose for their own child along with their doctor as the majority of moyals doing Brit Milah are medical doctors and usually urological specialists. So all you meshuga's need to get a life and get out of the lives of Observant Jews because we don't give a #$%^& what you think! If you try to outlaw it, you will have a huge fight on your hands because we won't let you meshuga's to decide for us .

What happened that was so horrific and why?
  • himmie 2012/07/07 23:37:04
Wow, I can't believe that medical professionals are this sexist. Women get way more infections than men, but I don't see you advocating that they have any part of their body cut off. Any man who thinks cutting a baby is okay because he would be just to cowardly to do it to themselves as an adult.....is not a man. Just because you think you don't remember it, doesn't mean it's not a memory buried deep in your mind. Infant Circumcision is traumatic and unnecessary, but so many people are so uneducated about it and continue to pass on inaccurate information, especially medical professionals. It's a shame.

Ever had sons? Getting a boy to keep his fingernails clean is like pulling teeth...do you really think they take the time to keep their penis clean?

I have two sons, both circumcised. Neither have had any oroblems, physical or othwise.

Personally, I would never "be" with an uncircumcised man. My motto: you want in?....shed the skin.
