Up until now, "cell phone jammers" were just a high-tech novelty used in thrillers and crime novels, but after a Philadelphia man was caught jamming signals on a public transit bus, the devices are becoming a hot-button issue. Turns out they're not legal, but according to Forbes they can be easily purchased online for anywhere from $40 to $10,000, depending on the strength and radius of the jamming signal. Authorities are worried the devices will block emergency calls or block business signals, such as bus dispaches.
One jammer told Forbes, "When I’ve used it, it’s to cut off a loud talker on the train that’s sitting near me ... No guilt. Just personal high fives ... I always have a grace period with phone calls. Like if someone is saying ‘Okay, well, I’ll be in the office in 10 minutes we can discuss it then,’ I won’t jam them. But if you are talking about what you did last night and what kind of curtains to get for the house, then yes. Silenced." Do you think cell phone jammers should be legal?

I want one with a five foot radius so I can shut my daughter up when I'm trying to talk to her. She's fifteen and once on the phone or texting, completely lost to the world.
I've driven up to her while she's walking down the street and pulled over next to her. I'm in an Astro Van so it's a noticeable vehicle. I've then paced her, right along side her while she's texting and talking on the phone. For over 1,000 feet. And she didn't know I and the van was there. The front end is five feet in front of her. She has a friend walking next to her equally oblivious.
When not texting or talking on her phone she walks head down, arms crossed, completely oblivious to the real world while awaiting her next txt or lol.
I honk the horn for .100 of a second and she flies straight up into the air, arms flailing, screaming at the top of her lungs; "OMG Dad, I didn't know you were there!"
She's going to die. Badly. We'll never find her body. And I've tried SO HARD!
Any suggestions? Please?
If I caught anyone doing it to me I would "jam" that thing where the sun never shine!
What kind of question is this, explain your reason for thinking on a daily basis.
But I will say some of the best entertainment in the day, was listening to cell phone calls on a scanner
But in general, I say yes to cell phone jammers, in certain places: in a school (I'd imagine it would help kids focus on learning, more than texting...), a courthouse or other government office where you shouldn't be chattering away. Also, I'd think that law enforcement could use jammers in certain situations. The technology has it's uses, but should not be abused by some guy who just doesn't want to hear a conversation while sitting on a bus.
Yes, they can be purchased easily, but customs will probably nab it and you'll never receive it in the mail (unless you're lucky). I considered getting one for classroom use, but then I learned that they were illegal. Also- in the case of an emergency I'd much rather have a room full of cellphones. Also, they can be detected by surveillance equipment and if you're caught using one...watch out.
Businesses should have the guts to ask rude people to leave if they're being disruptive by talking on the phone in inappropriate settings.
Passive technologies already exist and are already employed in buildings/places where cell phone use is prohibited, considering you can pick up one of these devices (about the size of a pack of cards) for relatively cheap...I say fair is fair....you may have the right to speak and be protected from censorship by the government, but you sure as heck don't have the right to do it while your driving and potentially kill someone in the process and you shouldn't have the right to do it when your "right" neglects the rights of those around you who would rather not listen to your conversation.
I think we've come a long way in technology, but I think we've sacrificed at an equal rate common decency and respect for others in the process. ...

I think we've come a long way in technology, but I think we've sacrificed at an equal rate common decency and respect for others in the process. Nobody has ever had a cell phone jammed when it was critical for them to be in communication and for the bands these devices are capable of jamming, law enforcement and public services operate outside of.
There is no clear defensible reason beyond convenience that someone can argue these devices should not be as tolerated as the cell phone itself. The "you'll just have to deal with it" nonsense actively and presently permits the victimization currently happening of those who should not have to just deal with it....they didn't asked to be harassed by your more-important-than-manners phone call and persistence in speaking on the phone while in the presence of others who are not part of that conversation shows a thorough disrespect for the space of others. A jammer would assert and equally level the common decency and respect field...you have a right to disrespect me....I should have an equal right to prevent it.
As the mother of an epileptic daughter I would be extremely upset if she tried to to reach me & I was the victim of a cell phone jammer. My daughter has grand mal seizures & they are nothing to play with.
