Should Anonymous Internet Comments Be Allowed?

The anonymity of the Internet is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it's a valuable tool for privacy and security, and allows you to speak your mind without having to worry about it leaking into your "real life" too much. On the other hand, as we've clearly seen on sites like 4chan and YouTube, it sometimes coaxes out the worst in people, leading to hateful and disturbing content. New York lawmakers want to sheath that double-edged sword once and for all.

According to the Consumerist, legislation was drafted earlier this year that suggests, "A web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous posted agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate." However, opponents worry it will turn into a "heckler's veto" and completely ruin open speech on the Internet. Do you think anonymous comments should be allowed?

The day I have to start putting my actual name and address somewhere to post, is the day I stop posting.

My safety and privacy outweighs my pleasure in posting.

It's Rebekah. Crazy describes my personality and I'm a loud ass Texan. Hence the screen name. I'm not afraid to stand up and say my name and stand behind what I said before.

I couldn't find your middle and last name on your profile. And I don't know if that birth date is correct. Would you mind just scanning your drivers license and or birth certificate? And then upload them to your pics. It would just be so much more convenient and make us all feel so much better. Come on you brave girl put it on out there. We deserve to know exactly who you are. Rebekah, you crazy texan.

One you must think I'm new if you think I would give that info. You do notice my answer was yes anonymity should be allowed. But if you're gonna be an ass like you have at least tell us all your name .

"However, I do think if you aren't man or woman enough to use your name rather than anonymous, you're just a coward hiding behind a screen."

"One you must think I'm new if you think I would give that info. You do notice my answer was yes anonymity should be allowed."

These are both two separate quotes from YOU. Is being anonymous online good or bad? It's hard to tell from you with the conflicting views that you're giving here. I don't know if you realize it or not but using a screen name like SmartSassyMom or crazytexan is the same as using anonymous as a screen name Using anonymous as your screen name is less creative but it's certainly no less brave. And there's nothing wrong with it. I only gave the smart ass comment after reading your first quote that I copy-pasted in the top of this post. it's just kind of strange to read "However, I do think if you aren't man or woman enough to use your name rather than anonymous, you're just a coward hiding behind a screen" Posted by somebody not using their name. Unless you just can't figure out that Smart sassy texan mom is anonymous unless your name really is Smartsassytexanmom or whatever your made up screen name is this week. Oh well I don't know why I'm wasting my time on this I'm pretty sure everything I'm saying will go right over your head.

Great quote. Unfortunately there are many odd people out there and their truth is rather disturbing but I agree with the sentiment.

people make up screen names all the time and write stuff on the Internet. Any way people can be found out by the authorities where they are writing from if things really get out of hand. The Internet is world wide and people from all over want to post on the net so let them be after all is one of the few rights people still have. Does anyone remember George W. Bush and his "Free Speech Zones" and people being arrested for wearing a T shirt he didn't like at one of his speechs....well I do.

Let the Cyberbullies go, they really are not hurting anyone, grow some skin and stop reading their comments.
The internet is a giant poster board, people put all kinds of things on it, just stay to your usual section and you'll be fine.

There is no point in removing anonymity from the internet. Anonymity is one of the things that makes the internet work.

How about stopping spammers? How about stopping the people creating viruses for the sole purpose of destruction? Deal with them - they are a real issue.

    Anonymity is not.

Hope so since this entire site, and most of the internet is based off anonymous users. Limiting that would destroy the internet in it's entirety. Lets not kill the internet.

I actually meant to click on yes because I don't believe we need any more government regulations over our personal lives.

However, I will not write anything that I will not sign my real name too, and I do not respect the people or the opinions of people who choose to remain anonymous.

If you're too ashamed to sign your name to something you write, then don't write it in the first place.

I don't think it's a matter of being ashamed. It's more a matter of being crucified by a politically correct society who can't respect each others' opinions - even though some may indeed be crazy.

Well of course that's what it's all about. These people who want internet forum anonymity banned want to prevent people from saying what they really think pure and simple. Because they know those will mostly be the people who they disagree with. People who are not politically correct are the target here. They will never admit it though because they want people to falsely believe that they really support the first amendment. When they really only support the first amendment when it's in line with their politically correct agenda. Could you imagine a college professor being outed as having any conservative beliefs? How would their career end up if their not already tenured. Even that might not save them.

Maybe you should stay only on sites that forbid anonymity. Why would you want to be on sites that are full of cowards who won't use their real names? Keep in mind though these sites that require your real name will never have people who say what they really think. Except for the people who are very politically correct, with very few exceptions. But I'm sure there are quite a few people who only want to hear politically correct things. By the way most people can not say what they think without being anonymous because their employers will snoop on them and persecute them and fire them or refuse to hire them. And there are other people and scenarios where forum posters can not say what's really on their minds because it would cause them major problems. So I suppose all these millions of people should just shut up or suffer the consequences for saying what they think?

People are entitled to their own opinion. We should be allowed to voice that opinion freely. If you arent harassing, threatening or otherwise harming another, then youre just stating an opinion.
