If a citizen of any country leaves their home country [taking their citizenship there], then they relinquish their privilege to influence the elections of their birth country --Regardless of where they are from or going to. If you transfer your citizenship then you by default transfer your patriotism.
That is not saying the person is 'evil', merely that the person has made a responsible decision and therefore should be responsible enough to live with their decision.
I agree with you Jwalden: But I also think that if a person decides to leave say the USA for another country for good then he or she should leave their alligence where they came from originally and stay the hell out of the USA and stop bad mouthing us. They are nothing but cowards who cry for help when they are not happy any where they go. USA is the best in the world and these people like Paltrow and the rest of Hollywood should not be allowed to come back! I don't give people like this a second thought cause their ignorance shows.
After the fact, but what the heck...A U.S. citizen has the right to vote from anywhere. Anyone who thinks you relinquish your citizenship merely by leaving the country should go look at the INA.
Of course, we are still americans no matter where we live. If the diplomats that represent our country abroad, and our troops that are serving overseas can vote or should vote so we should be able to make a difference by choosing whom we want to be as " our President and Representatives". We are paying taxes the US government when we are abroad therefore we are 100% eligible to vote during elections.
If they retain citizenship or have duo- citizenship, I think so. I know people who would really study the issues and for whatever reason, find themselves abroad.
If they leave American...give up their American Citizenship...then they have no more say in American Politics, and should not speak on behalf of American Citizens. (Hear that Johnny Depp)
If they are in service to our country on foriegn land, they have the right to express their vote.
But I guess it's ok if they do, just once or twice, until they change their citizenship. But in order to stop being an American citizen and officially become a voting citizen of whatever country, they have to officially become a legal citizen of whatever country, thereby giving up American citizenship. When Bush was running for his second term, some people said on a radio talk show in SF area, that they'd leave the USA if Bush won. I can only imagine that they did.
Yes. This is their country...they are US citizens...and they pay taxes. Maybe they are working overseas...who can blame them since all of our jobs were sent overseas. Or maybe they have another good reason. I intend to vote in four years if I am living abroad...and I will be if John McCain is elected POTUS....and hope someone better is running next time around.
That's true. If McCain is elected POTUS...I don't think there will be a country left...or even a planet. I'm just not staying here to see the effects of a McCain presidency.
Ireland is good. They have some great golf courses there. NM for me is the blood that runs through my veins. Its the native in me and my love for mother earth.
I have an Ireland connection through marriage. My two sisters married Irish men and it is truly a great culture that is similar to mine. My nephews are cool as I have enticed them to read about their history and understand the struggles the Irish have gone through.
~If these people get a vote , they should allow the soldiers who have fought for our country to vote. If these people are not actually going to return within a year term let them vote in the country they have chosen to live in .
Mainly because of the troops. I just wish it was as simple for them as it is for wastes of space like Gwyneth Paltrow. I do think however if you are living abroad not in the service of the US you should be required to spend a certain amount of time in the US in a designated period of time. My late husband had dual citizenship and our 2 year does as well.

Ms. Paltrow has obvious judgement issues, but still has the right to voice her opinion - even if it's wrong.
