Should American Apparel Hire Snarky Plus-Size Model?

Nancy Upton definitely has the American Apparel aesthetic down -- amateur, risque, and a little bit awkward -- but the company was still unwilling to hire her when she got the most votes in their plus size model contest.

amateur risque awkward company unwilling hire votes model contest

The company rejected her because of her outspoken position on American Apparel's image and message, which she felt was an "unmistakable brand of female objectification."

Well, sort of.

Just before American Apparel dropped her from the competition, she wrote a feature opinion article for The Daily Beast pointing out the problems she had with the company.

She wrote, "I entered American Apparel's 'plus-size model' contest as a joke—and won. But I want nothing to do with a company that's wanted nothing to do with large women until now ... I had been super ooged out by American Apparel in the past—its sexy-nymphs-in-tube-socks ad campaigns, the skeevy stare of its hipster-hero CEO. I just couldn’t get this new stunt out of my head."

At first, the company was critical of her attitude, informing her that they could not work with someone as opposed to their company as she was. Not that she wanted to work for them, but they had to move fast before she got the chance to reject them.

Now American Apparel is flying her out to their Los Angeles headquarters to give her a tour of the facility and introduce her to some of their high-ranking female employees.

She agreed, on one condition.

Upton wrote on her blog, "[Creative director Iris Alonzo] has graciously offered to fly Shannon and me out to LA to visit American Apparel and get a look at what it’s really like being inside the company. I agreed, as long as I could write about what I saw. She said that would be fine."

Whatever the result, we appreciate her awkwardly appropriate sense of humor, and can't wait to hear what she has to say about her visit.

agreed write fine result awkwardly humor wait hear visit

    LOL
Please. A size 0 couldn't even fit two people into my jeans then or now.
I went on a fitness bender and lost fifteen pounds since that picture and I was still smokin' back then.

But she IS attractive. Nancy Upton has beautiful facial features, and American Apparel was, RUDELY, asking for a plus sized model.
I think it's hilarious that you're sitting there defending skinny people, then you say all these ignorant things about plus sized models. Girls CAN be beautiful with extra weight if they have the right body shape and features, and I do agree obese women shouldn't model, but there's a pretty huge line between overweight and obese. If she's happy with her body that way, and can still live a healthy life style, then why should she change it to fit the ideal of beauty. Not everyone thinks skinny is beautiful, many men prefer women with those types of bodies, and many women really do live healthy life styles and still pack on some extra pounds. I know lots of strong, overweight women that exercise all the time, and work very hard to maintain their "obese" bodies. Some women really can't lose a lot of weight be it due to a thyroid problem, or simply a slow metabolism.
I've eaten healthy all my life. I work out every single day, and I wear a size 9. I'm five foot nine, and you know what? I love my body. I have a a waist that goes in then out in a lovely hour glass, perky C-cup breasts, and a great ass, so why should I feel bad about myself? My stomach is ...

My stomach is completely flat, and I look good in a bikini, and it's people like YOU that make me doubt myself. For one second, I feel like there's something wrong with my body and I need to lose weight, or no one will ever love me.
You are a massive hypocrite, and I find you distasteful. I'm fine the way I am, and so is Nancy Upton. I don't have a body like hers, but if I did, I would learn to love it exactly the way she does.

Size 9 is not bad size. If a girl with a TRUE curvy body (not curvy as in nice way to say "overweight", but curvy as in breast comes out, waist goes in, butt & thighs comes out) Size 9 girl can be very attractive. I like petite, slim models, but I'm also a big fan of vintage pin-up models or recent urban models like Esther Baxter (look her up, she is very curvy and pretty.)

I'm sad that, just because I defended slim people and pointed out that praising obesity is bad, people just stereotype me as an evil person that hates anybody that's even slightly overweight. I'm not slim myself either.
I just think that recent trend of calling every slim girl "anorexic" and giving props for every girl that is overweight is a dangerous thing. It can really harm the society. Big girls (not saying you are) always scream about how Anorexia is killing girls, but when you look at average weight of females in US past 50 years it's NOT getting ANY slimmer, the average weight is dramatically INCREASING.
There is a big flaw in the argument when they say "Girls need to stop losing so much weight, they are being controlled by the media", because people are NOT losing wight at all over the years. The reality is opposite. Girls weight way more now then they did past several decades.

I agree with your overall post, but....
    >healthy vs unhealthy need to stop
That, I disagree... sure, a little snack here and there to treat your self, and to make your life happy, that's nothing harmful. But I believe generally people should be encouraged to eat and live healthy. Unhealthy life style might not affect you during your 20s or 30s, but it will come back and hunt you when it's too late.

because she will bring a sense of perspective to their business... and they were already looking to go in that direction if they were running a plus size model contest weren't they?

if they still flew her out to Los Angeles somebody that's high up in that company gets that---its call being smart.

They're obviously trying to win her over because she's basically saying tue company is objectifying women. Her dignity in speaking her mind and risking the money may have interested the heads of the company. It has very little to do with being smart, they're trying to win an outspoken opposition.

I dont know how you can disagree with me when you just said yourself it "may have interested the heads of the company"

I highly doubt they would really care about 1 customer enough to fly her across the country... they wouldn't have bothered unless they still were considering her for the job....

Absolutely hire her. Maybe some value will be instilled in some of the people of this Country, ie values that do not segregate people because they are "overweight". not "pretty", or "just do not fit in my society". The US has lost some moral values.......
  • Koshka Ole SGT... 2011/09/23 17:47:32

... and you think other country's modeling agency will hire her? :P
  • Ole SGT... Koshka 2011/09/24 13:34:44
    Ole SGT Joe
Depending on the Country. All I am trying to say is give treat everyone equally. Unfortunately, the masses of a particular time period dictate and promote what is "in" and what isn't. Just a short 100 years ago she would have been a super star as "skinny" people were definitely not worth advertising.

    >Depending on the Country
Which country are you talking about, that will happily hire big girls? I'm sure your not talking about Europe, Asia, Latin America because country from these continents have average weight waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay lower then US (except Mexico).

So now we exude US, Europe, Asia, Latin America, I really would LOVE to know, which country have the "moral values" that you speak of?
  • Ole SGT... Koshka 2011/10/14 18:46:51
    Ole SGT Joe
First, it was the USA that promoted "non skinny" people. Second, unfortunately although there are a number of people that exhibit moral values (and I assure you that I am one) there is a percentage of the population that can't even spell the two words let alone know they mean.
  • Renehta... Koshka 2012/02/05 18:40:02

Actually, lots of European countries hire plus sized models. Have you ever been to Europe? I have, and walking down the streets in London, Germany, and the Czech Republic, I have seen plenty of plus sized models on billboards, and on magazine covers, why? Because Europe is a lot less hung up about weight than America is, it's just like if you watch European movies, their actors tend to be a lot less plastic, they look like real people, and it gives their movies a more grounded feeling, like what's happening in the movie really could be happening to anyone. Europeans have the ability to see the beauty in real people.

She won the contest. But HELLO. You are ALL missing the point. The point was to perhaps not stir as much controversy as it has, but to point out that American Apparel is a sick/objectifying/slave-working company. There are plenty of reasons not to buy that $50 tshirt. One more reason is the reason that Upton points out- they have been rejecting "plus-sized" because it "wasn't there demographic". What does this say? It says... women over a size 10 need not even look at our clothing line. Even if you want hazard yellow leggings. A size 12 is not obese. There is such a stigma attached to women who are over a size 6 that they don't exercise enough or that they eat too much, but in our everyday American lifestyles... ya know, working a desk job, going to school and being in a chair for 8 hours, watching television, etc etc etc and our lifestyles of CONSUMERISM (buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy) don't make it easy for women (or men) to be healthy individuals. This woman, however, is probably a HEALTHY woman. Not everyone comes in a teeny package- and not everyone wants to DENY themselves the little slices of heaven this world has to offer in between the rest of the mess. For everyone who thinks this woman is disgusting or gross... just go eat another rice cake and leave her alone. She is doing more good than you know and at least she pointed out to the company that their policies are known and unacceptable to some. And for god's sake people LIGHTEN UP!
