Given that the country hasnt been this polarized since pre-civil war periods, isnt it time the regions of America Went their own seperate ways? I have an idea on how this can be done effectively, and without all the sacrifices that would come from a normal secession.
First, we need to establish a government system that gives people powr over their own communities. For instance, the culture of one town in Mississippi wont look like the culture of a town in California. The people are different, and their values are different, and that should be okay.In this new system of government, communities would be able to govern themselves without fear of federal or centralized government, or some foreign political group coming in and dictating their livelyhoods based on the opinions of people who are 1000 miles away and will never live there. Then, we need to create a binding document that recognizes individual liberties that are natural to every human being, so that everyone, regardless of what region theyre in, is free to pursue life as they wish.

The end result will be a nation where the people have direct influence on their livelyhood, communities dictate to themselves how to do things instead of answering to a governing body foreign to the area, State governments represent its many communities, and the national government doesnt have authority over states, but instead protects the principals that give states, communities, and people power over their own lives.

WAIT, isnt that what we had to begin with? WTF happened to America?

I did not write this - I don't know who did. But it sure is funny.

    "Dear Red States

We're ticked off at your Neanderthal attitudes and politics and we've decided we're leaving. We in California intend to form our own country and we're taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware that includes New York, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the rest of the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation and especially to the people of our new country of The Enlightened States of America

    (E.S.A).

    To sum up briefly:

You get Texas , Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches.

We get Andrew Cuomo and Elizabeth Warren. You get Bobby Jindal and Todd Akin.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.

We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.

We get Harvard. You get those ignorant fools at Ole' Miss.

We get 85 percent of America 's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama .

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.

With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of 80% of the country's fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92%of the nation's fresh fruit, 95% of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90% of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the US low sulfur coal, all living red woods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States you will have to cope with 88% of all obese Americans and their projected health care costs, 92% of all US mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99%of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62% believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44% say that evolution is only a theory, 53% that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61% of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.

One side of me says we should preserve the union, but the other side says states such as California, Oregon, Washington, nearly all of New England have nothing in common with "fly over country". If the country split up into liberal/conservative countries, the conservatives would be called upon to bail out the liberal side as they realize the Welfare State ruined their economy along with affirmative action, quotas, high taxes, environmental Nazi-ism, godless hordes fleecing each other and corrupt pols enslaving the citizenry who don't have guns to fight back with.

If a state or 2 decided they wanted to secede and form their own government in alignment with the original US Constitution, respecting it's authority over them, I would be right there with them, ready to move in.

Why do the conservatives act like Obama is at fault? And liberals act like the Republican Party is evil incarnate?
Isn't it possible that the two parties are like two sides of the same coin? Promoting a different agenda, but ending up with similar outcomes? And trading back and forth every four, eight, twelve years?
    Get it together.
The division is to keep people occupied.
Hey, it's working! Has been working for quite some time now.

America is already split into states. If the federal government would drastically reduce its size, scope and authority over the states, they would have no desire to split further.

    Perfect!

The Constitution, as good as it is, was likely an overreaction to the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation; and allowed too much federal power. Actually following the Constitution should, though, be tried before more drastic measures.

The 'United States', and its populous, is in a "tug-of-war" between powerful entities. The 'infighting' and the separation are not options. The main option available (unity) is hidden to not be an option.

It is very sad, but sometimes I wish we did have a choice of going down the road of socialism at best, or remaining loyal to our country and the consitution so many died and sacrificed for. We had the greatest country on Earth, and it is the apathy of the people that has allowed us to begin losing our pride and our liberty.

We have become so divided as to those of us who want liberty over government control, and those who view change and the security of government taking care of all your needs as the answer. It has gone beyond disagreement on policies, there are strong demonizations and hatred toward those who want to preserve our country. Futhermore, the media continues to blow on the flames of disagreement engulfing the division even further.

It seems the only way left is to give both sides what they want. Let the progressives have their big government and loss of freedoms. Give those who want to preserve our country and way of life a place where they can do so.. The only problem is that geographically we can not split. The division is not between North and South, or state against state. We have grown so far apart, but I believe there is still a chance that we could come together as a nation and heal, if only we had leadership that encouraged being united instead of practicing divsion. Our msm also does our country the greastest disservice by being the instrument that drives the wedge between us, and demonizing anyone who disagrees with the current administration. They have inflamed the hatred and division like putting gasoline on a fire.

I'm not an American but personally I think it would be better if differences could be worked out without "splitting".I believe countries are stronger when they remain in union.
Over here in Scotland we are facing a referendum on Scottish 'independence' in 2014-
i.e whether we are to remain part of the United Kingdom( England/Ireland/Wales)
For a variety of reasons, not least of all financial, I am a staunch Unionist and will vote accordingly in '14.But of course, everybody has their own views on such matters and we shall just have to wait and see what happens...

I'd prefer we broke peacefully along basic political lines/differences, but maintained a mutual defense pact. It's a sure bet, though, that a nation of over 300 million people trying to hold itself together (without going tyrannical) is next to impossible. It's not practical or humane to force one half of the country to live by the other half's standards of morality, to pay the other half's bills, etc.
