ABC's Brian Ross came under attack Friday when he reported that James Holmes, the suspect of the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., may have connections to the tea party — basing that on a single web page that listed an Aurora-based “Jim Holmes” as a member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots, leaving some in the media to say he should be fired for reckless reporting. Do you agree? Should Ross be fired for the blunder or not?

Please rave this post.

    Brian is a seasoned reporter.

Brian was not reporting, he was speculating with other peoples lives and reputations.

    Brian should absolutely be fired.

Brian's employers should also be held accountable because they were not reporting the news, they are creating the news.

    Brian sucks.

    Brian's employers ABC schmooz sucks.

No. Why should he be fired?

    He did not misreport anything.

He said there was a Jim Holmes in Aurora who is a Tea Party member . . . And there is a Jim Holmes in Aurora who is a Tea Party member.

Should he be fired for accurate reporting?

    I don't think so.

Politics aside (although this situation does stink of the political), the slipshod methodology involved here (by a "crack investigative reporter") should be reason enough.

I edited my college/university newspapers, and had a reporter come to me with such a flimsy connection, I'd have sent the person back to do his/her due diligence. If a college kid could claim such standards, shouldn't it be expected of the "professionals" in the field?

    Let's see it . . . LIAR.

Give me his exact quote . . . the one you find so offensive.

Show me what was so wrong about what he said.

He was merely speculating. He never defintively said the Jim Holmes, the Tea Party member, was Jim Holmes the shooter.

He merely suggested the possibility. After all, James Holmes the shooter lived in Aurora Colorado. And so does James Holmes the Tea Partier.

    What's so horrible about that?

Sure, he should not have made that speculation on the air, but he never said anything that was incorrect or nonfactual did he?

On the other hand, Lying is the default behavior for you lying Right Wing Nut Jobs.

    . . . Know what I mean ?? LIAR

You obviously didn't read my post with any attention: I can make factual statements, but those facts do not rationalize the implied conclusion that was obviously desired by SABC in this case. One does not present opinion as "news" when one is in the "news" business. Read a bit morecarefully before shooting your (metaphorical) mouth off.

ABC news is not a college newspaper. Live air is faster paced, obviously.

ABC reported information as it came in. And they reported accurately.

    They said nothing inaccurate.

    They offered no opinions either.

It was nobody's opinion that a Tea Party member named Jim Holmes lives in Aurora, CO.

    That is fact.

He qualified his statement and said that it was possible this is the same person. Not supporting him but just consider this another example of everyone trying to be the first to report something. If Brian is fired, the replacement won't be any different. The whole attitude needs to change.

The guy made a mistake. There were a lot of mistakes made. The number of wounded, the number of dead... In the chaos of a breaking news story mistakes are bound to be made. He had the document in his hand that said Jim Holmes was a member of the tea party and ran with it. He was wrong. Show FOX be shut down when they make a mistake in reporting. When they accuse Obama of something he didn't do should that reporter be fired. When Limbaugh says something as stupid as the villain in the new Batman movie
is named Bane because it is going to make people associate the villain with Bain Capital an not vote for Romney, should he be fired. Well... Limbaugh has said so many stupid things over the years. I would have fired him for any one of those.

Fox News does that sort of thing all the time,in fact they encourage it for their show image and the audience ratings which they collect because of that. When last year the Norwegian radical RWNJ Anders Breivik bombed and shot dead 77 civilians,Fox news immediately suggested it was probably an Islamic terrorist attack. So if Brian Ross has to go-then so does the whole Fox News Gang.

This is what's wrong with Americans today. We act like little children and refuse to take responsibility for ourselves. It's always someone else's fault, someone else's responsibility, etc. it's EXACTLY like what a rwnj would say.

I am certain that ABC and Brian Ross deliberately "reported" this "possible" connection between the shooter and Tea Party Patriots in deliberate attempt to smear the conservative movement.
I don't believe that was a mistake. It was simply a drive by reporting, as Rush often says. Put it out there and later issue the correction but only if other people prove ABC and Brian wrong. The problem is that many hard core leftists will refuse to believe the retraction.

It fits their liberal pro obama and anti Tea Party agenda. Fox News did not make that up the ABC and Brian Ross did.

But FOX has lied and made so many other mistakes. Why don't all their reporters get fired. And I am not sure ABC made it up. The name was on a list of Tea Party members. He read the information he had. Hell, just a few weeks ago FOX news reported that Obama care was found unconstitutional then when they realized their mistake, they gave the real story. They are clearly out spreading anti obama beliefs and have an agenda to repeal the Affordable Care act. I think they should be taken off the air for making a mistake. What do you think?

The guys name was on a list of Tea Party members. They read the name thinking it was him. It was a mistake. Everyone makes them. Why does it have to be deliberate and some kind of partisan propaganda. What is the difference between what FOX did wit the Affordable Health Care Act and what ABC did? I don't see your argument. It is exactly the same thing. Mistakes happen in times of crisis. People are scrambling for information hoping to be the first to break the story. You just refuse to see the truth because it is easier for you to believe the conspiracy.
  • Marek Cleaver62 2012/07/25 19:32:35

It is a pattern of the likes of ABC, NBC, MSNBC to "report" a lie as it was truth. Run with it for however long they can get away with it and when confronted claim an "honest mistake." Fox News is irreleveant to this discusioon.

Why is FOX news irrrelevant to the discussion. Aren't they a news organization. Don't they make mistakes? I din't hear NBC or CBS or MSNBC say anything wrong about this issue, so why are they even part of the discussion. Isn't that what FOX does... lie and run with a story then are called out and never run a retraction. You right wingers just see conspiracy around every corner. But you have no facts to back up the claim. Only your opinion... which isn't news, it is just your opinion.

    He reported the facts.
  • Marek Lee 2012/08/03 00:08:33

No he did not report facts. He told us what he wanted to be a fact. He noticed the same name associated with the Tea Party and got excited about it so he did not bother to verify if it is the same person or not. A lot of people totally unrelated have the same first and last name. In my case there are 68 people in the US and Canada whose names are identical with mine. An honest professional reporter would verify his info before publishing it.
