It may be a "cruelty thing" since it takes force to get some girls into braids. It could also be a measure to prevent discrimination, since not all girls grow hair long enough to braid, either because their parents keep it cut short, or because they come from a racial background with slow hair growth, and/or short terminal hair length.

[edit] Also it could have to do with the school's roots as a religious school. The braid is often viewed as a "vain embellishment." Medieval churches would not tolerate women coming to church with braided hair(some medieval communities refused to tolerate braids in women's hair period), nor would puritans, so that may be the root of religiously rooted schools not allowing braids in their school dress codes.

I'm insulted that you'd think that hairstyle and means of expression is "BS".

Self expression is not "BS". First of all, that woman in the picture has a phenomenal job done on her hair, and it was probably really expensive to do. Second, hair like this means NOTHING except self-expression.

This is me. Do I look like a delinquent who has nothing going for her? No. I'm expressing myself in an outward fashion that I can show off to the public. If people don't like that, that's too bad.

I personally wouldn't choose the piercings she did, but that's all part of the look she was going for.

Actually, coming from someone who was recently IN high school, they DO ban that sort of hair style because it "distracts" students from their work. You can do artificial coloring and crazy hair to a point, but administration has the power to say, no, your hair is too distracting.

Point taken, but what's allowed in government funded high-schools and privately funded elementary schools are two different things.

I don't see any kids around here going to school looking like this, actually anywhere looking like this, but whatever, this little girls school had some sort of rule about hair....stupid as it is.

The hair bow looks ridiculous. I'm sure kids were making fun of the poor little girl. You know how kids are.

It's obviously stupid and cruel. It's a violation of free speech, even in a school, to so severely restrict freedom of expression of a student (and/or the student's parents).

Since its a stupid decision, somebody here will surely blame it on "liberals." Snort.

It is their school? So you would go into a restaurant that specifically states it doesn't serve alcohol and demand them to serve alcohol to you?

Ummm no. You know before going in what is involved. Parents sent their kids there for a reason. They agreed to that dress code. I don't see the problem with that. If you don't like go to another school. Now, I don't know the school system and how they operate in the UK. That isn't my business.

"So you would go into a restaurant that specifically states it doesn't serve alcohol and demand them to serve alcohol to you?"

Answer that. It is the same damned thing.
