Should A Private Contractor Handle Arlington Cemetery?

As the nation prepares to celebrate the 4th of July, some are wondering if the Army should transfer management of Arlington National Cemetery to the Department of Veterans Affairs following the scandal kicked up by a report from the Army’s inspector general revealed a dysfunctional management of the hallowed military burial ground. Others yet think a private contractor might better handle the job.

The Army fired the cemetery’s superintendent earlier this month after the IG’s report uncovered evidence of an unhealthy workplace climate, a lack of established policies and more than 200 discrepancies between burial maps and gravesites. Salon.com, whose reporting prompted the investigation, also revealed this week that the cemetery has quietly, and illegally, reserved choice burial plots for VIPs. In hearings this week, Rep. Ike Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said problems at Arlington dated back decades and should not have been tolerated this long.

According to AOL News, Skelton wondered whether the Army should give up control of Arlington, with Virginia Rep. Joe Wilson adding that VA cemeteries are run well and asking if there would be “any benefit” in transferring control to the VA. Army brass expressed the feeling that it is the Army’s responsibility, especially in times of war, to carry soldiers to their final resting place. The Army has run Arlington since 1864; the VA runs 131 national cemeteries in 39 states through its National Cemetery Administration, including 33 soldiers’ lots in private cemeteries.

Interestingly enough the VA takes really great care of Dead Veterans. If they could only apply the same level of competency to the Living Veterans. I am a disabled veteran and my son is as well. I have done fairly well with the VA but my son's care has been a total flop.

If not to the DVA, then... [while not necessarily to a private business but] to a private charity such as the Wounded Warriors Project.

the Army should take the people who are assigned the care and operation of Arlington, and send them for training in the private sector so that they will be able to do they're jobs properly. This talk of transferring the operation into private hands to me rings of cronyism. I'm sure the cost of operating a place like Arlington, runs into the mega millions. That would be one sweet payoff to a crony if some politician could pull it off

Since when is the Department of Veterans Affairs a private contractor? It's a federal government agency.

They very well could allow a private contractor the privilege of doing the work, but the Army should continue keeping a hard eye on how its being taken care of.

If Obama and the Terrorcrats have power much longer, the military will insist on private graves so that our brave men and women will not be humiliated by an hate filled, abusive government.

...should have more scrutiny with who gets interred in Arlington and make ABSOLUTELY SURE that the right person is being interred in the right place and that the other Branches of the Military have the same scrutiny.

On a more personal note, it pained me to tears when the scandal broke. Arlington is one of the Most Beautiful Places in the Country and to have it stained with scandal was almost too much to bear.
I really don't know if the DVA, the VFW or any other Veterans Group, by itself or as a Group effort can make things right or better. I Hope that a solution can and will be found. We owe Those who are buried at Arlington MORE than we can ever repay them.

Could handle the ceremonial stuff, but anything is better, when run by something other than the government.

That may be a better choice than waiting for AC staffers to clean up their act. All's they are is a paycheck. They obviously don't have any civil pride much less military respect.

should have some oversight as to how things are ran to make sure this doesn't happen again... and if it does THEN turn it over to the DVA...

Makes you look forward to all people getting the gov care doesn't it? My Dad's care in a VA hospital led directly to his death. I am a veteran as well and do NOT look forward to it!

Not to politicize your comment, but let's imagine for a moment a VA-style government system handling the WHOLE of health care in America.
Thank you and your son, both, for your service.

Not to a for profit. Maybe to a veterans group. There is no one on earth that would take better care of our fallen heros than the vets.

This is what happens to our heros in a gov run system. Can't wait till the same type of system runs the hospitals.......can you?

I agree. A for profit in charge of Arlington would probably be the worst thing possible. The rates to have someone buried there would skyrocket to levels that the family could barely afford, and I wouldn't put it past one of them to charge admission in order to gain access to see the graves.
A group like the VFW would probably be good.

The question is more than likely "WHY?"
These men and some women would be proud to be next to their "Brothers and Sisters" Those who died at their sides protecting ech other and those who came back to grow ol;d and join their comrades so late to the party.
What do the Marxists think they are going to do. with these lands that were hallowed by the Gettysburgh Address.
