John McCain has helped pass a bill to limit registered sex offenders from accessing social network sites. Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators Act of 2008 is the the bill that will require sex offenders to register their emails in a master database. The database would then deny access to anyone trying to log on to a social network site with a "sex offender registered" email address.

If you think about this plan, however, what is to stop the online predators from just creating new email accounts? Email servers like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail give access to disposable webmail accounts. On the plus side, if the sex offenders are honest and register their email accounts, it is much easier to check for email addresses, than policing message boards and profiles.

They only way to stop them is to keep them locked up.
They can't be rehabilitated, in spite of what some may say.
Some local government Goof will give them "sanctuary" just as is being done with "ILLEGAL ALIENS".

I agree sex offenders should be punished but the notion that they will re offend and that treatment will not help is false. Sex offenders according to studies have a very low percentage of re offenses. Also when you pass this kind of law to "Protect the children" studies have proven time and time again sex offender registry's and laws like this do not keep our children safe, studies show that the majority of children who have been sexually assaulted know the offender.
And additionally these laws not only ruin the lives of the majority of sex offenders who did their time AND NEVER OFFENDED AGAIN but they also punish FOR LIFE the family and the CHILDREN of the offenders.

Registering IP addresses with emails can help. Most predators are highly restricted on their movements anyway, so the idea that they could frequently access other computers is limited at best.

I have no clue what the actual bill looks like though, so I am just speculating.

Of course, the best solution is still to have responsible parents actively involved in their child's life.

i think all sex offenders especially the violent ones, the pedofiles and the child molesters should be strung up in front of our county court houses every tuesday. why tuesday? people ask. its as a good a day as any.
    1. it shows love to the ones they harmed.
    2. it relieves our prison system from the strain of housing these beasts with no sexual restraint and predatory minds.
    3. it sets an example that our society will not tolerate these behaviors to all who would think of commiting such acts.
say: and you call yourself a christian?

will slow themdown, but not stop them. But even if one minor is saved from a predator by this bill, it has been a successful passage in my opinion. When you know one minor who fell for a sexual predator's "lines online", and how their lives were torn apart, you feel thrilled that just ONE child might be saved. That is the value we should be putting on every human life. I also agree that first-time offenders for preying on minors with success, should be given longer sentences (20 years min) and repeat or serial sex offenders should get a life sentence. If they can be rehabilitated, they can just live better lives in prison and do charity work there while they finish out their sentences.

And if that doesn't work, casteration would sure solve the problem ... especially for Pedofiles. Let the punishment fit the crime and I'm not talking about an 18 year old boy with a 16 year old girl friend. I'm talking about those sickos that will screw anything that moves. Each case should be handled individually.

I thought I would never have to agree with such actions. But I feel you are probably right, but we both know that will never happen as someone will come to their defense saying it isn't legal. Cities can't really keep track of where these guys are living let alone control what they do on the Internet. People actually have to be vigilent about who moves in around them, especially apartment complexes etc. where there is a more transient environment. grannie

I think it is a great idea and may catch a few of the bums but remember that people acn register so easily for different addresses and use anonymous remailers and such, so it will be hard to get the ones that use such tricks. Add in the sheer volume of email every day. If they have such a hard time catching mass email spammers it is going to be hard to catch the pedo bums (who should be locked up forever.)

No, I don't think it will help. McCain has no clue on how to turn on a computer least of all how many different ways there is to get on social sites on the Internet. But signing that bill will sure look purrrttyy on his record, wont it ? It is a false sense of security and parents might let theyre guard down when it comes to their kids using the Internet. Now, that is dangerous !

There are some nice isolated and desolate islands in the Aleutian chain off of the southwest coast of Alaska that would be suitable for a literal "Gulag" for pedophiles. Take the whole lot of them out of society and let them molest each other 'til they die of exposure! And while were at it, make sure we round up all the NAMBLA founders and members and place them there first. Put the female pediophiles on another island as well.

This is a good effort and the vast majority of registered sex offenders actually follow the rules. The problem is that the ones who don't follow the rules also actively find ways to contact children. This law is similar to registering guns. I can legally own a gun and will always register guns, but criminals usually don't follow the law, so registration laws simply keep the honest honest, just like this sex offender law.
  • John Doe Donald 2008/10/30 00:48:51
    John Doe
They are not bound to follow this law because this law is UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!! It violates the First Amendment (as decided in the State of Utah), the Fourth Amendment prohibition against warrantless search and siezure, the Fifth Amendment right to fundamental and procedural Due Process, and the Eight Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment (taking away a citizen's First Amendment rights is cruel and unusual).

The Bill of Rights places clear limitis on the power the government can excert on the public, and this law crosses that "clearly established" line. Additionally, it accuses every registered sex offender is currently committing new sex crimes via the internet, when the government has no clear evidence all sex offenders are committing new crimes. Basicially, in order to do what this bill outlines, the "suspect" must be under official investigation, and law enforcement must apply for a "warrant" before a neutral judicial officer (judge) clearly stating the facts which justify such an intrusion (such as clear evidence the individual is committing a new crime, or has committed a new crime.)

Will not stop Predators from accessing sites, though it will stop some.... Probably those who would least like to go back to jail. Those who are afraid how other prisoners will treat them or have.

BUT, it still gives the govt a weapon. Even if they avoid being caught at first by using Yahoo or other such addresses, when they are caught, the penalty will be stiffer because they did not register the address. That will keep them off the sites for longer periods while convicted. It could also mean after being caught, they would not be so apt to repeat.

The NSA actually has the ability to check any communication line. They could set up certain words that would flag the messages, no matter who used them, in places where predators hang out. Then, just check those messages. They also could monitor the lines of predators, so no matter what email address they used, they could detect them using banned sites.
  • John Doe Kingair315 2008/10/30 00:39:00
    John Doe
You people seem to forget that there are laws which limit the governments power to conduct survallence and warrantless searches of citizen's communications. You all seem to forget that the action you support and propose is illegal - NO ONE CAN DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT A WARRANT - PERIOD.

So, yes go ahead, illegally monitor my my online communications, and if and when I am charged with a crime (which I currently have an order saying I do not have to give up my online identifiers), I will sue any public official who violated my "clearly established" constitutional rights as a citizen to this country.

This law will not stay on the book because it is ILLLEGAL!!!

I think it will help against sex offenders but still wont stop it from happening. New ones and the ones that haven't been caught don't need to register. The others will proably register some of their email accounts but not all of them. It will only help attorneys to prosecute them after they are caught again, giving them long jail sentences to an already burdened prison system.
