I agree with you and some of the tactics of politicians is to deflect people's attention to the fact the politicians on all sides haven't a clue.

Some of us are afraid of answering the other questions because we are tired of being battered! One question had me being so bashed that someone had to come directly to my email to personally insult me. (people wonder why I block them)

Because those issues keep us distracted and allow the politicians to avoid discussing big problems being faced.
As for gay marriage, I say just legalise it already and stop all the fanfare, since in this day in age it can be considered discriminatory to prevent gays from equal privileges and therefore shouldn't need popular votes. It would be absurd to have to vote on allowing interracial marriages, so why this? Making it an issue of debate just distracts from real issues, while just legalising it and moving on would shut up the gay population and wouldn't affect anyone who doesn't want to have a gay marriage. If they want a religious ceremony, leave that part up to the churches... marriage licenses are in the state's hands, are they not? I always thought the religious ceremony was separate. So it seems like the politicians are turning this into a big issue, just to distract and keep people at each other's throats.

To clarify, I don't think churches should be forced to perform gay marriage ceremonies, but I think gays should be allowed to get a state marriage license.

Then I seriously don't get why the media is saturating us with this debate... I guess I blame the media as much as the politicians, for misdirecting us.

You really do make a VERY compelling case-

I was at a friends house a few weeks ago- for Earth Day- she's a Professor of Engineeering and she designed her own home- and has solar panels on her roof- along with an extensive garden- and the utility company is actually sending HER CHECKS! Because she is overproducing energy.

Of course she is called a communist by many- because she has too much intelligence and actual self reliance-and teaches the same to others! we LOVE our corporate overlords- and all suffer from a massive Stockholm Syndrome in which we defend and justify the unconscionable actions of our captors- all in the name of some dim memory of free market which no longer really exists!

I DO notice- that the Islamic world seems to have bypassed the financial meltdown that is ravaging Europe and the US.

Of course,Muslims actually obey the part of their religion that forbids usury-
while Christians and Jews simply ignore that particular tenet of faith.

I understand that Turkey has seen unheard of economic growth in the past 5 years- so much so- that the EU has suddenly warmed to them after rejecting their pleas for inclusion for 45 years- and that Istanbul is now the new Paris.

I think it's primarily to keep us distracted, so they don't have to tackle the bigger issues... it's also the easiest way to sway voters.

As for why we get so wrapped up in it? I don't know, we're kind of pack-minded it seems...
