Every congressional person and senator that leaves for vacation should be recalled. At the very least voted out of office during the next election.

So if you don't agree with the democratic budget, you are causing the problem? What is a conservative said the same thing? What ever happened to compromise on BOTH sides??

Remember when the Democratic Budget created a Budget Surplus that began paying down the National Debt? Then the "Compassionate Conservative" and his Cronies decided that they couldn't Destroy Social Security & Medicare if we were paying down the debt, so they Cut Taxes and started two Wars to create the illusion that we can't afford to fulfill the promises that the nation made to Seniors after they paid into the programs all their lives; at least not if we are going to Kiss the asses of the uber-wealthy. SCUMBAGS, I tell you.

Geez, just go home and enjoy Christmas. Obama won't negotiate because he needs the tax increases to pay for what he's already spent. He WANTS to go over the cliff, which we all have done already. Might as well enjoy your vacation while you can, because no one will win this one. We're all screwed.

I say let us go over now rather than later.. You know how much money the tax payers could save if the government shut down for even 1 day? Then we can get to the work of fixing the country. Why is the physical cliff only a problem after the election.. Like I don't know.

when these people are elected they take an oath to do the nations business. why are they not at work, Government doesn't recognize religious aspects of this time of year, why should they be "out of the office" when there is serious work to be done. They could have at least made it look like they were trying to help our Nation.
They have fed themselves with pay raises, benefits and other perks that most Nations only reserve for the Highest office and they still are gone more than they are working to reopair the Nations ill's. lLet's fire them all and have sensible, business minded people run this Nation and stop all the deficit spending. Cut these individuals salaries to start and no retirement Golden Parachutes, this is suppose to be a public service job not a lifelong heirarchy of a privileged few.

Harry Reid and Obama don't want a solution. They have dug in their heels publicly in favor of an idea that will not hurt their wealthy cronies, will not solve the debt crisis Obama has created, and includes private businesses so that Obama can kill more free enterprise. The are maneuvering to blame republicans even though the house offered exactly what Pelosi had previously. The Dems have no intention of fixing anything except the brains and beliefs of their army of useful idiots. They would do less damage if they went home.

It's really a toss-up because even if they had stayed, Reid would not have permitted any Senate vote on any of the nearly 40 bills that the House has passed, about half of which dealt with the so-called fiscal cliff.

Until the electorate finally gets around to holding their democrat elected officials accountable, nothing is apt to change. ...That takes the hard work of self-education to separate the truth from the political rhetoric ...so i doubt that happens either.

Perhaps the only solution is for the US economy to collapse so that "everyone" feels the pain, then the crony corporate rich, and the 47% that pay no federal tax but absorb most of the benefits, will all finally be in the same boat with us in the middle who always get stuck with the bill for Congresses profligate spending habits?

I am tired of paying their salaries and benefits for both sides to posture.
Do the job you are getting paid for or return your salary.
It might go a long way to pay the deficit down.

Although the House is still out and at least the Senate came right back....and of course bills are supposed to start in the House but as dysfunctional as it is I understand Boehner trying the hail Mary to the Senate. Senate staying would have simply more forcefully shown that Dems were working and House wasn't.

They all have been on the government teat for sooo many years that losing a holiday vacation would be UNAMERICAN to hear them tell it. They know what's coming down the pike and still manage to take everything to the wall.

They are failures at time management along with, financial management, anything that needs management could be done and well done by John & Jane Public. They are too engrained in the political circus they play every blessed day.

They don't DESERVE a holiday vacation. Do your damn jobs FIRST, then receive deserved time off.

The House (lead by Boneher) left for Christmas so everyone else needed to leave also. The Senate will be back on 12/27 and so will the President, but the House has not been called back yet, setting up no decision until next year. Nothing will be decided until the current temporary tax cuts (10 years, but still temporary) are history which will happen on 1/1/13. A new reduction for the first $250,000 income will be easier after that because even the current obstructionists, those who got re-elected that is, will want to vote for a tax reduction.

There's not much they can do to stop it now. It's been decades of uncontrolled spending caused by politicians with vested interests in the spending policies they pushed on us. Most have long ago cashed out and are laughing all the way to their graves. Our fractional reserve banking system is nothing more than a nation-wide (global, actually) Ponzi scheme. Cheats like Bernie Madoff have already come and gone, under the guise of politicians, and "made off" with America's prosperity, leaving us with the bill. It's not even enough to go back into the kitchen to wash dishes anymore. Our tab is too big. Instead, we'll be handcuffed, tried, and led away into debtor's prison when foreign debtors pull the rug from under us. So, let these politicians have one last "Merry" Christmas. Someday, even THEY will long for the days of prosperity and riches we are very quickly losing. I'm sorry to be such a downer during the holiday season, but I can't see a solution anywhere on the horizon for us.

It's all the same. I refuse to get panicked about the budget because it won't effect my life either way. This bunch only represents their own interests anyway and they have made it clear they plan to bankrupt the country rather than compromise on spending. Why rush getting bad news? Let them go on another paid vacation with their secret service details and their government planes. I can't change them so I am going to ignore them because there is nothing else to do.

Whatever is actually needed to be acted on by Congress is often so skillfully and tactlessly ignored by the leadership and the members Congress. Unfortunately with our money to spend, they often can't get back to Washington fast enough. Do you ever get the impression that dealing with Congress is like popping 535 pimples at the same time? As for blemishes on America, Congress, the Cabinet and the out of control EPA are the most obvious and damaging!
