Turns out Sarah Palin was right: being the mayor of a small Alaska town is The Most Importantest Job Evah! Which is why it can be done by a cat:

To hear the locals tell it, during the town's mayoral election some 15 years ago, residents who were unhappy with the candidate selection were encouraged to write in the name of a newly born kitten instead.
And Mayor Stubbs has ruled Talkeetna, Alaska (pop: 900) with an iron paw ever since.

Does a town of 900 really need a mayor or the salary that goes along with it?

Seems as though they could put every decision on a flyer tucked in the local diner's menu and leave their vote in a box on the way out.
Tally them up every week and Wha-La .... govt. by the people - for the people.

Oh, that's right. One of the jobs that she quit mid-term cuz she couldn't handle the pressure and stress of being investigated. One of her many tried and quit ventures.
