Santorum whines and gets Secret Service protection

27th February 2012

They are neck and neck in the polls.

And now Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is catching up with rival Mitt Romney in the security stakes too.

The 53-year-old is expected to get Secret Service protection from tomorrow, according to an administration official with knowledge of the plan.

Secret Service protection is granted to each major party's presidential nominee but can be provided earlier if the Homeland Security Department approves a campaign's request.

Federal law allows candidates to seek protection if they meet a series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.

The campaign of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich requested Secret Service protection last week and is awaiting word on whether he will receive it, a person close to the campaign said yesterday.

Former Massachusetts Governor Romney is currently the only candidate to have Secret Service protection, which was granted on February 1.

Santorum has stormed ahead in the last month to nose just ahead of Romney in the polls.

Currently he leads 32.9 per cent to Romney's 29.0 per cent, according to data from RealClear Politics.

In back-to-back speeches over the weekend Santorum hit out at Barack Obama calling him 'a snob' for saying every American child should be able to go to college.

'Why does Obama want everybody to go to college? So his liberal college professors can be indoctrinating people like he has,' Santorum said, drawing a long ovation.

He also condemned the idea of a separation between the state and the church.

President John F Kennedy had made the idea a key part of his 1960 campaign with an impassioned speech. This weekend Santorum said that speech had made him 'feel sick'.

Santorum laid in to President Obama too, slamming his apology for the burning of Korans at a U.S base in Afghanistan.

He added that Afghanistan should apologise to the U.S. for the deaths of four U.S. soldiers during six days of violence sparked by the incident.

'There was nothing deliberately done wrong here,' Santorum told ABC's This Week.

'This was something that happened as a mistake. Killing Americans in uniform is not a mistake. It was something that deliberate.'

Both Santorum and Romney are gearing up for a close race in the Michigan and Arizona primaries tomorrow.

I hate to have to go to bat for Rick Santorum (Really I do) but I must concede that he is entitled to - and should receive - Secret Service protection. Let's not forget what happened to Bobby Kennedy on June 5, 1968.

I thought all men were created equal. I don't factor in which political party they are from to discriminate. This seems to be a continuous problem with the Liberal mindset.

Why does an intelligent person like Mopeder (Joe Bunting) put a stupid title on his posting? The article itself does not indicate at all any type of "whinning" by candidate Santorum, so I declare that Mopeder is the "whinner"!

Sure, let him have it. If there's a sign somewhere of possible threat to him, then he should get covered.

Imagine the foofooraw there would be if he got himself shot and there was NO SS coverage on him! The radical conservatives would instantly make out that the Obama Administration had left Santorum hung out to dry.

Of course, should anything happen to Santorum they'll scream and moan about something or other anyway.

Obama received his in May 2007, roughly a year and a half before the election...was that due to his "whining"?

No. He received the protection, and the Bush Administration is on record with this, that because he was the first black candidate Obama was facing special dangers from white supremacist groups. This was either an ordinary precaution or possibly the SS got wind of something that hasn't been published.

If you remember there were several VERY incompetent "attempts" on his life shortly after he won the election.

Incidentally, I don't recall him getting SS protection in mid-2007 but more like the first quarter of 2008. Are you sure about the timing?

Oh, let him enjoy his brief time in the limelight. The RNC and the Koch brothers sure are not going to help anyone but Romney get the nomination. They want at least a chance of winning, and Sanctimonious Sanatorum isn't that ticket to ride.

Luv: "The RNC and the Koch brothers sure are not going to help anyone but Romney get the nomination."

I sorta recall you telling me that the Koch brothers were the ones funding Herman Cain and the Tea Party. Now you are saying they aren't gonna help anyone but Romney?

Am I being nit-picky or are you suffering from that liberal progressive ailment known as SMS (Selective Memory Syndrome)?

Not at all, AV. The Koch's blow with the winds and whims of the GOP and the RNC. Whomever they feel is going to be the GOP winner will get their dough. Cain looked a possibility before his fall, but Romney was in the back of their minds at the gitgo since they held the first fundraiser for him at David's home on Long Island. Guess Cain was just a bit of a kink in their handicapping?

To me, no one should have to fear for their lives, and I feel all presidential candidates should have Secret Service Protection. I don't favor Santorum's policies, but I would still hate to see him injured or even dead, because of his particular dreams, ideas and/ or beliefs.

Ladies and gentlemen, you have just witnessed an exchange so typical of fellow liberals who discuss their true ignorance of real politics and end up considering getting drunk (one is married).

Wow. How the hell did you conjure that up? 1/ ANYONE can be friends, does not matter if someone is married or not. Friendship is just that... plain and simple. For normal people. Guess you're not normal?

And drunk? I said "a" beer, he said "a" glass of wine or champagne.

I do not drink, at all, but still I am sure I could handle "A" beer, or glass of something else, and not be drunk. Besides, I would be in my home and my friend would be in his. Are you getting this?

And still, this is just fun chatting on an open blog between 2 folks who do not even know each other. Just fun teasing about how much fun it would be to see that idiot Santorum make as ass of himself, again.

Get a clue, maybe a life? What a worthless soul you are.

You and I both know that one drink leads to another and my wife would not want me teasing with another woman on line. This is how many relationships begin on the internet which can lead to broken homes. I see Santorum as one who is brave enough to step out in public to try and make a difference in our country knowing full well that there is never a shortage of liberal detractors hoping for his failures. United we stand and divided we fall.

Too bad you and your wife have no faith in each other.
50% of the people in this country are of the opposite sex and if you can not have a friendship with any of them because you have no ability to control yourself... well, I am sorry for you.

Santorum is a failure himself. No one has helped push him in that direction. He lost re election in his own state after only 1 term. Every time he opens his mouth he get support from complete extremist nuts, but everyone else looks at him like he and they are psycho. I hope he gets the nomination, and if I could vote GOP when the primary is in our state... Oh you can bet he would get my vote. He is such a disaster for your party, we would love to see him on the ticket.
