Originally St. Petersburg, when built by Tsar Peter the Great and named sometime between 1703 and 1714 (but named after the apostle Peter and not the Tsar himself as legends told), was not the first place to be built in the Neva delta, after the Fort Peter-and-Paul, as there were formerly Finno-Ugrian populations and Swedes settled on both sides of the Neva (first known names of a Swedisch settlement were Nyenschanz and Nyen).
The name of St. Petersburg (or shortly Peter in Russia) was changed from 1914 - 1924 in Petrograd, from 1924 - 1991 in Leningrad and then became again St. Petersburg.
