I have known several people involved in scientology. I can say they are certainly steadfast in their beliefs and have spent a ton of money on "classes". One couple I know lost their home. I thought that was a bit extreme. They were also advised to create distance with non scientologists including family and friends. Would I call them a cult? Idk, maybe. Different for sure.
