Ron Paul advocates that social security is a welfare program, and a ponzi scheme, yet he receives social security checks. Is he a hypocrite?

WASHINGTON – Ron Paul,
a staunch opponent of federal welfare programs, acknowledged Wednesday
that he receives Social Security checks, shortly after advocating that
younger generations opt out of the program.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Paul was asked by Huffington Post’s Sam Stein
whether he should set an example for younger Americans and opt out of
the program entirely. Paul, refusing the notion, compared the program to
other common goods such as the post office.

“Just as I use the
post office, I use government highways, I use the banks, I use the
federal reserve system, but that doesn’t mean you can’t work to remove
this in the same way on Social Security,” the Texas congressman said.
“In the same way with Social Security, I am trying to make a transition.

“I want young people to opt out of Social Security, but my goal isn’t to cut,” Paul said moments before.

NO, and I will make a comparison to prove otherwise.

Since the Social Security ACT has been enacted, it is mandated that every employee MUST pay into SS and there is NO legal way to opt out of SS. Those contributions that are mandated to be paid are YOUR funds and under the SS Act those funds are entitled to those eligible to collect at age of determined retirement.

When Congressman Paul first was elected, he was given the option to opt out of the Congressional Retirement Fund in which he did. This CRF is taxpayer funded and throughout his congressional career, Dr. Paul has voted against any legislation or programs that lay a burden on the taxpayers. Because of his decision to opt out, he will NOT collect a Congressional Retirement pension.

Dr. Paul has continuously proposed a plan where younger workers should have the option to opt out of Social Security and use that money to fund their own independent retirement plan. His proposal also would use the funds that are spent on illegal wars and foreign aid which total into the billions to be used instead to shore up SS and Medicare until a pragmatic plan can be in place to slowly phase out or reform those plans.

So in essence, to call Ron Paul hypocritical is a oxy-moron in the sense, SS is a program he was forced to pay into...

He has stated if SS was a program when he first started in the work force gave him a option to opt out, he would have done it without question. That option was and still is not available.

No he isn't a hypocrite. Paul has always advocated reform for social security to be implimented for younger workers and give the existing and 'soon to be' beneficiaries what was promised to them during their entire working lifetimes.

Although Paul is an advocate of abolishing the system for young workers, he has also said he would support a system simliar to the Chile/Galveston system of private ownership.

He's half right. It IS a Ponzi scheme, but it's not a welfare program. Worse, the government steals the money for operating expenses.

Many people believe that it is a retirement savings program, which, it SHOULD be, but isn't. Even if the government didn't steal from the fund, it is still paying off old investors with money from new investors. Bernie Madoff went to jail for running the same type of scheme.

We need to keep it going for people who are 50 and older and pay people 40 to 49 a reduced rate. People below 40 should not be required to pay into the system and should not receive anything. Companies should be required to continue payment to fund the program until everyone is out. Allow people to save for themselves. Social security is going to fail.

Politicians are hypocrites in general, but collecting money that you were mandated to give up is ok with me.
The sad thing is that there isnt any way to get back the $1.5T that our politicians stole from the pot....they're probably still stealing money from it.

We pay a substantial amount of our income in order to be able to retire when we reach a certain age. That is definitely not welfare! Mr Paul wants to rob Peter(us) to pay the rich even more!

The courts have ruled that you have no "right" to any benefits. The courts have decreed that SS is solely at the discression of congress to provide whatever benefits they choose to offer. SS "contributions" are a tax like any other tax. You legally have no vested interest in the SSTF system, at least not from a legal equity claim. That's why Paul, Gary Johnson, Herman Cain and others have advocated either an opt out for young workers, or replacement of the existing system to a Chilean system for younger workers under 35y/o. But I can't find where anyone is advocating an "opt out" or abolition of the system for existing beneficiaries. If you can find that, please post a link to that advocacy.

I'm not aware of Ron Paul telling anyone that they shouldn't cash their SS check. If you are - please cite the time and place.

I say my taxes are unreasonable and yet I pay them - am I a hypocrite?

I say I'm being asked to work too many hours for the salary I'm given... but I don't quit - am I a hypocrite?

Being a hypocrite means that you expect other people to follow one set of rules while you follow another. Ron Paul thinks we should implement a path to move people off unsustainable programs like Social Security. I agree. But while the program exists and continues to recycle our money while taking a cut - I see no hypocrisy in getting a few of our own dollars back.

If you are forced to pay into a plan without your consent you have the duty to get back as much as possible of that money and the interest it would have accrued.
