Romney's New 'You Didn't Build That' Attack Ad: What Do You Think?

Mitt Romney got a gift from the political gods last Friday night when President Obama made his now infamous "You didn't build that" speech in Virginia. The Romney camp didn't waste much time using the President's remarks to galvanize their campaign around the fact that President Obama seems to think that the government makes business happen.

In all fairness to Obama, it sounded like he was talking about the bridges and roads when he said "you didn't build that" but the comment was ambiguous enough to be taken either way. In any event, it is political gold for Mitt Romney who can now paint the president as anti-business and out of touch with what makes America great.

FOXNEWS.COM reports:
Mitt Romney's campaign kept up the drumbeat of criticism Thursday over President Obama's you didn't build that gaffe, releasing a scathing web ad in which a New Hampshire business owner says: President Obama, you're killing us out here.

That fact is, it is the hard working entrepreneur willing to take risks that innovates and creates jobs. It is that same entrepreneur that pays taxes for the very services they use.

Federal/State income taxes pay for the majority of government services and it is the bottom 50% that pay no income tax who get a free ride.

Capitalism trumps Socialism every time, let's get on with it and send Mr. Obama back to Chicago. The Government hinders job creation, not helps it.

I Wish that Romney would go listen to Karl Roves advice and GO BALLS OUT after obama on the economy, jobs, and the debt.

Ignore abortion as established law, ignore healthcare-he can fix it later-but GO BALLS OUT on obamas NON EXISTENT records, lack of voting record, the DISMAL economy, bleaker jobs outlook and the debt.

The only blatant person in this situation is Obama himself.

Out of context? You cannot possibly take what he said out of context.

In fact sharing only clips from his speech is a kindness, as the full speech is even more atrocious than the clips.

Once again, Obama has thrown American citizens under the bus in the name of winning the Presidential Election.

"Out of context? You cannot possibly take what he said out of context."

Yeah you can. Romney did in his ad, and there are tons of blogs and polls on Sodahead right now with far right extremists gleefully lying their a$$es off by taking it out of context.

What precisely is so "atrocious" about the full comments Obama made? You find the American ideal of excellence and providing a quality, reliable infrastructure on which businesses can build to be "atrocious"?

Oddly, it seems that this is precisely the stance of today's right wing extremists. You deem it "atrocious" that Obama referenced how a good teacher can help educate tomorrow's successful business owners, but we now know that Texas Republicans oppose "Higher Order Thinking Skills, critical thinking skills and similar programs" in schools. So education is clearly not valued by Republicans, making your feelings of offense consistent with theirs. http://www.washingtonpost.com...

You deem it "atrocious" that Obama referenced the usefulness of decent roads and bridges, but we now know that Republicans have been busy blocking multiple Acts and programs that aimed, at least in part, to put construction workers back to work updating America's infrastructure. So it would seem you're consistent there too. http://www.govtrack.us/congre...

The big question is why you might be so offended by a quality education and a reliable, up-to-date infrastructure?

Yes, they will hang on to those out of context quotes and try to milk whatever they can. I am a teacher, but didn't know about the Texas Republicans being against the higher order thinking skills and critical thinking. Why should they have a problem with teaching students skill and how to learn for themselves (as opposed to memorizing)? Your post is extremely well-written but sadly will be ignored by the very ones that should read it.

I only just learned of the Texas GOP statements on education myself. If you haven't read the whole link I provided above, I recommend it. It includes their entire 2012 platform, and much of it is pretty horrifying. Especially when you consider Texas' impact on education materials distributed across the country.

I'll have to check that out. Hmm. that could be very scary. And you're right about the textbooks, they have a huge impact on them. I know I had heard rumblings years ago about some history "facts" being changed. But for myself as starting elementary school in 1966 and graduating from high school in 1978, I believe that some things we were taught as facts, in actuality were not true. Hey, I couldn't believe it when my daughter told me Pluto was not a planet, who knew?

Yes, that does happen from time to time. Although in the example you cite, what we're seeing is simply updated conclusions based on new, more reliable information. That's a good thing in my opinion. But the Texas GOP is saying things like:

"We oppose any sex education other than abstinence until marriage."

    and...

"We support school subjects with emphasis on the Judeo-Christian principles upon which America was founded and which form the basis of America’s legal, political and economic systems."

and of course are trying to inject intelligent design and anti-climate change concepts into science classes by stating...

"We support objective teaching and equal treatment of all sides of scientific theories. We believe theories such as life origins and environmental change should be taught as challengeable scientific theories subject to change as new data is produced."

Yes, what I was talking about was a bit different. I understand how people can not want sex education taught, but the consequences of that are just terrible with teenaged pregnancies. I know that in social students (I teach ELA 7th grade) they study Asia and Africa. They do cover religion but on a historical basis. What Islam is, What Christianity is, Hinduism, etc. But that's about it. I'm sure they don't want to bring "climate change" into the mix since they so steadfastly deny. (How tired I get when we do have cold weather when the right wing talk show nuts say, Oh yeah, you can tell the climate is getting hotter.) Ack, they get on my nerves. Thanks for telling me about this, I still have had a chance to read it but I will. They are crazy!

Yes you can, and Romney did. Unless you have have a terrible understanding and the comprehension skill of a plank of wood then you could possibly misinterpret what he said.

I own my own business and I didn't do it by myself! If it were not for the infrastructure from the roads to my building to the power-grid that allow me to operate, I wouldn't have much of a business. Not to mention my advanced accounting professor who really hands on worked with me and taught many things I used in the success of my business and career still to this day. The nut in a shell for those who're just too obtuse to understand it is that America is a success because of our ability and to come together and be our brothers/sisters keeper and have each others back.

But right-wingers reject that philosophy in lieu of Ayn Rand's "it's all about self and screw any and everyone else" philosophy.
