Wouldn't want to acknowledge the fact that the "didn't build that" statement was in regards to roads, bridges, police and fire departments, technological infrastructure, etc. Noooo...it's much more politically expedient to take the line totally out of context and give it an entirely new, false meaning. Make it sound as if Obama was saying business owners didn't build their own businesses, even though that's clearly NOT what he was saying.

As for this ad, Romney is lying his ever-loving ass off. Obama's comment that "you didn't build that" was in regards to the roads, bridges, police and fire departments, etc. that he was referencing, NOT in regards to the business itself. To claim otherwise is a flat out, blatant lie.

It was private business and high income people who paid most of the taxes to build those road, which were built by private companies, BTW. See the businesses came first, not the other way around.

Who said business didn't come first? The point was simply that they exist with some help, which is an obvious fact. ("If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help", and "the point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together") If you have to put words in Obama's mouth to support your point, then the likelihood is that your point is flawed.

Obama pushed his policy goals of infrastructure (aka stimulus) spending and “government research” as part of a collectivist utopia “doing things together.” It’s simply stunning that he would tell Americans, “If you’ve got a business—you didn’t build that.”


After all, could individuals be resourceful and hard-working enough to create whole new enterprises? Obama said:

"Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart."

It is this view of successful businesses—essentially, “You owe us”—that drives Obama’s continued attacks on the country’s job creators in the form of tax hikes and regulations.

No, it's simply a rebuttal to the relentless push by right wing extremists to label every single government expenditure as a socialist plot that needs to be stopped. To their refusal to simply acknowledge that teachers aren't evil - in fact, they help educate tomorrow's successful entrepeneurs. And federally funded infrastructure has benefitted our economy. And cops and firefighters are crucial to the perservation of safety in our society. Instead, the far right simply wants to cut these types of projects. Abandon maintainence of our infrastructure. Reduce the pay and benefits of our teachers, cops and firefighters, or simply fire them outright.

So to support this misguided position, they're forced to take a statement completely out of context and change it's meaning. To lie. Because in context, Obama was simply saying that "you didn't build" the roads, bridges, internet, police and fire departments, etc that help every business on some level. But it's much more politically helpful to lie and make it sound like he was saying "you didn't build" your business.

Considering the full context behind a statement is not a game. Taking it out of context in order to creatively alter it's meaning is the game, and that's precisely what Romney is doing in this ad. What Obama said and meant is something far different from the lie you folks are portraying it to have been.
