Romney Thinks That Obama Supporters Are 'Victims' Who Rely on Government Handouts: Is He Right?

Romney has gone and done it again. The Republican presidential candidate called 47 percent of Americans "victims" for supporting President Obama in a recent video of him talking at a private fundraiser.

Romney thinks Obama supporters are living off of state handouts, and he is probably right for about 10-15 percent of them... but it's that other 85-90 percent of Democrats that go to work and participate in the economy that he should be trying to get to vote for him! Insulting potential voters is most likely not the wisest strategy, and you know Obama will be all over this in the debates. Remember Regan Democrats? That's what he needs to win. Good luck with this one, Mittens.

NEWS.YAHOO.COM reports:
Mitt Romney stood by his comments captured on a hidden camera at a closed-door fundraiser earlier this year in which he called supporters of President Barack Obama "victims" and said they are reliant on government handouts. In a hastily arranged news conference Monday night, he called his words "off the cuff" and "not elegantly stated."

    More like exploiters.

The vast majority of people that take government assistance should be earning their own way instead of taking the earnings of others.

But it is easier to vote for Democrats than actually working so the collapse of our economy will continue.

ok i have figured out part of your problem. you have never studied what the fed spends its money on. otherwise you would have never raised that point in regards
to no taxes and only spending cuts, this is simply put not real.
no i fully well realize that 49 million americans are on some sort of government
assistance, what you do not understand is they are there because of a long and very damaging economic downturn, they are not there on a permanment basis
but rather a temporary one. you make the assumpation these people are lazy and do not want to find work, that is wrong and a collsasl misread of the situation.

first of all the question is out of text...Romney doesnt think 47% of Obama voters are victims....47% of the Obama voters think they are victims... I have seen them ... I know the difference between a person down during hard times...and a person that is determined to stay on Government assistance... and actually strives at doing it... getting paid cash when they do work so they still get the government assistance ... and people that are offered jobs that equal or exceeded the $$ of the government assistance ... they turn it down...doing nothing is easier for these 47% if the job isnt going to at least double the welfare and food stamp pay...Its not worth the effort for them...

actually it is what he said, and he was talking about 47% of all voters.
you can dance around this for a while but in the end it will catch up.
there are some that want to live on government assistance but they are in the minority and you know this. yes the right likes to over hype the number but the facts are clear. one should also make a distinction between people that are
on some sort of government assistance for reasons that pertain to the economic collapse and those that want to stay on government assistance.
also what about senoirs, i do not believe for a second that these people
consider themselves lazy, they are on government assistance such as medicare and social security. yet these people make up a large part of the 47% that romney was talking about. you can try to twist his words but in the end he was pretty clear.

Medicare and Social Security... ARE NOT government assistance... people paid into those PROGRAMS... the governemnt then robbed the money out of thoses programs and misused it ...causing the programs to be in the situation they are in now ...close to broke...Social security and Medicare are no different than if you put money into a bank and and were promised a certain interest rate of return...and when you go back years later to get your money ...the bank tells you sorry .. we gambled your money away... Totally different from government assistance programs like welfare and food stamps and Free medical care

actually if you look at it from a techicanal stand point, it is government assistance, however i tend i agree with you on tht point.
i do nt consider it to be government assistance either.
actually when it comes to both programs not only has the government taken from these programs but so has the general public and much larger dollar amounts than you or i would think possible.
as to your last sentance when you said we gambled away your money
the first thing that came to my mind was wall street, how much the gambled away.

I totally agee that the Social Security program is flawed... as for wall street.... I have several " investments" in the stock market...I consider them the same as putting money on the table in Vegas.. maybe it will pay off ...maybe it wont.. so for those that lost big in the stockmarket ...I am not sure what their thought process was...do they not understand it is a crap shoot

my point exactly in terms of privatizing social security. yes i do not like putting that much faith in politicians, however they want to keep there job more than life itself and therefore they will always make sure
that money is there, however wall street has no such idea and will put that money in credit default swaps and steal it and then tell everyone
that they lost it all and we are so sorry. while the laugh all the way to the bank. fixing social security is easy lift the cap or raise it, problem solved. the problems are much harder and far more complicated.

Very minuscule amount in reality. If we are talking abuse of government try comparing social welfare subsidies vs corporate subsidies, one is for food and the other " executive compensation".

Has no one identified Heisenberg method of rave grabbing is sheer lunacy wrapped in hate and dash of patriotism. I particularly enjoy soda-headers going " get her Heisenberg", what is he the doberman of the peon? This is why the urban legend of the democracy toppling welfare queen has lasted this long....guys like this...and the people that believe it.

i work two jobs AND take care of my father 24/7... no handouts... look forward to social security and mediare WHICH I HAVE PAID INTO MY ENTIRE WORKING LIFE when it is my time.... I'm only 60... i have a few years left. so I am NOT one of the "victims"... i work just like the rest of America!

and when I lost a kidney and had been paying health insurance premiums for 10 years and spent two weeks in the hospital it was the INSURANCE company that screwed me out of $115,00. i'll be paying that off for the rest of my life. I didn't ask for government subsidy like big oil or wall street. National Health Care will actually help me with any future issues I might have along the way.....

    sorry you don't get it... but that's ok . . . peace ;-}

According to latest polls it looks like Obama has around 47% of the vote. I'm taking the comment to mean the 47% who support Obama are victims, etc

Are u interpreting the comment differently?
  • Deborah... nat75 2012/09/22 02:20:00

I'm not interpreting anything differently, you're the one who used the word "all."

geez what im saying is that romney is saying that ALL of obama supporters, which is 47% of the population are looking for handouts and you agreed with him. so he is saying ALL of the people who support obama are looking for handouts, and you said that is true.

so romney didnt use the word ALL, he meant all. anyway im tired of this round and round argument. have a nice weekend.

First time seeing this video, my colleagues refer to it often. After seeing it, I facepalm for thier weak attempt at making a point. I'll clarify: She is not literally saying Obama is going to pay for my mortgage and gas, she was saying that she will not have to worry as much when paying these things/having to choose between food and full gas tank etc. It was an expectation of some form of relief...not a check literally. An superflous notion, but it's what both parties claim to provide...relief.

Why I voted for Obama? To slow down the War Machine. A War Machine that evolved because of the 911 attack, an attack that many Americans know was orchestrated and planned by people in powerful positions in the US Government and Israeli Government.

Help put an end to Obama's murder campaign —Tell the U.N. to investigate the drone strike program, NOW!

This week, U.N. special rapporteur Christof Heyns broke the conspiracy of silence. Condemning drone strikes as a threat to international law, Heyns argued Obama's disregard for human rights could constitute a war crime, and that the CIA's actions in taking out potential terrorists left no room for accountability or even proof of guilt!

But words are not enough. Now, Heyns is calling on the U.N. to establish an investigatory body to determine how many civilians have been killed by Obama's drones, and whether his attacks can be condoned by international law. If we speak out, we can make that investigation a reality--but we need to act fast!

Drone strikes create more radicals than they could ever destroy, and kill more innocents than they can ever save. It's time for that truth to be known. Tell the U.N.: Investigate Obama’s Drone Strike Program NOW!
