Yesterday Mitt Romney said of President Obama, "...he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people."

We have higher teacher to student ratios than both Korea and Japan yet trail those countries miserably in math and science. We need BETTER teachers not more teachers, but with the NEA we're doomed to piss poor results in the schools. Firemen and police should track up or down with population and building permits. It's pretty hard to argue for more firefighters in Detroit where whole neighborhoods are being bulldozed to consolidate public services. In fact, Detroit is a shining example of what continual democrat party control brings to society.

We need more teachers, period. They closed my sons school a year ago, an entire k-5 school, that had all very full classes and they just plain bus those kids 30 -45 min to another school, and doubled every class in the other school with these kids. Did not hire 1 more teacher, not one.

All the teachers from old school lost their jobs, some had been there for over 20 years.

Then they closed the middle school, and took the 6th graders and put them back into elementary school, and moved all the 7th and 8th graders into the high school. Again, not hiring a single teacher and just laying off all from the middle school too. Just doubled up everything, and cancelled most of the elective classes in the high school, because they had no room or money to even offer them anymore.

The kids are dropping out of the high school like flies, parents just homeschooling instead and MANY teens just walking the streets now. And this is not an inner city area... we are in a small town, rural area... so seeing a bunch of teens just mulling around is quite noticeable.

Thank you GOP law makers for cutting and cutting and cutting in every direction that you are now creating more high school drop outs and more kids who will never get anywhere in life past the damn welfare lines. Nice job, are you proud to be a part of this?

That's been the plan all along since the 80's.....dismantle public education, vouchers are the answer, privatize education and make a profit. That's been in the works for decades and it is now starting to come to fruition. And look at the comments on here...those who think it is just a wonderful idea.

I agree and w/ the private schools, they can teach any agenda they want to, and do. Look at the A Beka book series from FL. These nuts make 98% of the books for the private schools in the USA. And it is damn scary. Those books are nearly pure fiction. I have some here... my daughter went to a private for a few years and it was pathetic what they claim is history and science and anything else. All crap BS.

That is because the teachers are striking and refusing to teach for their exorbitant wages.

No teachers striking around here. Wish they had, at least done something to make a fuss, they did nothing... they honestly thought there was no possible way they would close that wonderful school and literally double up all the kids, but they did. And it is now the end of the first school year of this disaster and they have exhausted teachers and kids who do not even care anymore.

I see you live in Oregon, a state run by democrats for many many years. No wonder your schools are closing. It's going to get much worse unless the voters wake up and disrupt the unholy alliance between government unions and the Tammany Hall politicians running your state.

"They", that is to say, "You", have a screwed up local situation. Maybe you should consider moving to Wisconsin where Governor Walker's reforms have balanced the budget without laying off teachers or raising taxes. It's not the federal government's job to fund local school districts.

WI has the highest unemployment rates thanks to your pal and criminal Walker. He just bought an election. You may have been fooled by him but I was not.

I don't look to talk shows or partisan web sites to obtain objective financial data. You claim Wisconsin has the "highest unemployment rates" and you call ME stupid? Oregon's unemployment rate is 30% higher than Wisconsin's. Wisconsin's UE rate is significantly lower than the national average while Oregon's is higher. Here is the federal government's list of all 50 states as you obviously have trouble looking up objective data unaided.

    http://www.ncsl.org/issues-re...

Please don't write back unless you've looked at this list and have an intelligent comment to make about Wisconsin's rate. I'd like to know how you think it compares to your state.

Why do you believe a reduction in the federal gov't would affect local issues? The Federal Gov't does not pay for Firemen or Teachers or Police Officers. Those are paid by local taxes. If the economy recovers then local tax coffers will expand. So I do not see anything wrong with Less EPA administrators, All the Czars gone, Less Commerce Dept personnel. Removal of the TSA. A streamlining of the Homeland Security. Removal of the Energy dept. To me those are all good things.

Do you really want all those taxes? And what's the point of having so many soldiers, especially seeing as they're not even in the country ready to defend it. Have a reserve force, be non-interventionist, and reduce military spending by 60% at least.

But not now on the military! I know a lot of people that when they have no other jobs (before college or after) to turn to, that is where they go!
  • Anonymo... Bloodle... 2012/06/09 17:28:51

Exactly. The army is basically a big public sector scheme to help people get jobs, you complain about bureaucracy, this is the biggest bureaucratic public sector organisation in America, and it's useless most of the time, so you keep it occupied by starting wars with everyone... You have thousands of big Atomic bombs and missile defence systems, you'd have to be mad to attack the US, you'd be blown to smithereens!

First of all cut down bureaucracy in it and cut down health spending by having either a swiss style compulsory insurance scheme or medical vouchers, then lower taxes and regulations to make more private sector jobs, then reduce the size of the armed forces gradually.
