“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said.

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

Sociopaths have no need for any knowledge outside of immediate self-gratification. If he feels good suggesting that cranking down windows on a plane doing 600 mph at 30,000 ft,; then he'll say so. The fact that the statement is beyond stupid, is irrelevant.

While you all are having your funfest about Romney's understand of science or lack, it doesn't mean he's ignorant about most things. Obama is the guy as a candidate who once said he had been to 57 states, was going to vist two more but couldn't get to the last, for a guy who was running for President not getting the number of states correct is far more disturbing.

The question is a little odd in talking about oxygen fueling fire when the greater danger is sudden decompression of the cabin and the sucking out of the oxygen from the cabin of the plane if you "open a window". Along with other items like people. But bottom line, yes, he's pretty ignorant acting most of the time. Sometimes I think he must be talking dumb on the supposition that everyone is so much stupider than he is that he's actually "connecting" with them by talking down to them. Whatever. He wasn't on the plane or he probably would have busted a window open and that would be the end of that question.

Sounds more like he was concerned if the people on the plane were going to choke to death on the smoke, and if they could have opened a window to let some smoke out. But yes that could have made the fire worse.

If the jet was high enough and a window was opened the pressure inside the plane will drop, and everyone inside will die.

Why didn't the masks come down if there was smoke? This plane doesn't sound very safe. I'm glad she is okay, though, I don't wish anyone harm.

It was a private jet. I don't know whether they are required to have drop down masks the way commercial flights do.

I guess you don't need oxygen if you don't want to breath.
  • JackSchitt 2012/09/24 22:10:51
Romney was right about letting in more oxygen.
    JackSchitt

What he said makes perfect sense. Accorting to the United States Fire Administration statistics, 70% all of fire deaths are the result of smoke inhalation. Actual flames and burns only account for about 30 percent of fire-related deaths and injuries.

From what I read, the fire was an electrical fire, so it was most likely small and contained. In a sealed plane cabin, his wife probably suffered a MUCH greater chance of harm from the smoke than from the fire itself.

And the likelihood of explosive decompression killing everyone in the cabin doesn't matter?
  • JackSchitt ProudPr... 2012/09/25 02:26:47
    JackSchitt
So you think the only two choices are:
    A) Open a giant hole in the fuselage big enough to cause explosive decompression
    B) Choke to death

Back in the 60s and 70s, they used to filter more outside air into the pressurized cabin. But with each passing decade, they look for better fuel economy so they shoot for less drag...all the while sealing the cabin tighter. By the end of the 90s there was a 30% drop in outside air ventilation. Apparently it's a big deal with all the health problems that stem from the stale air.

He meant for breathing...he knows oxygen fuels fires but it also enables us to breathe...pressurized air is why we can breathe without much trouble in an aircraft. Seriously you take everything an opponent to Obama has and make it personal. You aren't even talking politics.

I KNOW he meant for breathing. No one is suggesting that he WANTED to make the fire worse. But even assuming that the plane had neither drop down oxygen masks or accessible oxygen tanks (one or the other of which has got to be required by the FAA) the simple fact that you would decompress the passenger cabin and probably kill everyone in it is what makes it such an idiotic suggestion.

Okay, but it still isn't right to call him stupid. He may not have stopped to think about it. Obama didn't stop to think before saying "57 states", it just kinda came out. People need to stop criticizing canidates on small personal things and focus on the issues.
  • me ={WGO}=... 2012/09/25 00:57:11
    me
Yes, that's obvious he meant for breathing. "Pressurized air" is the clue there. Granted, the question was a little obtuse in mentioning that fire is fueled by oxygen. But there is more danger of decompression by opening a window. That sucks things out of the airplane usually under great force and without bothering to tell people to tuck their legs and arms so they don't get ripped off on the way out the small windows. I knew that when I was about five.
