Romney Announces Paul Ryan as His VP Pick: Will He Be Able to Win With This Ticket?

Early Saturday morning, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced that he had chosen Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate for the 2012 presidential election.

42-year-old Ryan, is considered a rising GOP star and the party’s leader on fiscal and budgetary issues. Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee and the architect of the House GOP’s budget proposal, and his selection as Romney’s vice-presidential pick ensures that the economy will be the defining issue of the election.

Ryan’s place on the ticket is sure to appease the party’s conservative wing, which has never fully warmed to the more moderate Romney. In Ryan, they find a like-minded ally who supports dramatic policy solutions to the U.S.’s fiscal woes. Ryan, who is an energetic debater, will bring youthful vigor to the campaign and will help Romney in Wisconsin and across the Midwest.

However, Ryan also comes with some downsides. Thus far, Romney’s campaign has been geared toward making the election a referendum on the president. Now, Romney is tied to a very specific budget plan that has a name and a face and has been widely criticized by Obama and his fellow democrats. In an April speech, Obama called Ryan’s budget plan a "thinly veiled social Darwinism." Romney’s choice in Ryan will certainly energize the GOP base, but it will also energize Democrats who do not want to see “the end of Medicare as we know it.”

So SodaHeads, what do you think about Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate? Will he be able to win with this ticket?

Romney Ryan

    "Social Darwinism", exactly.

BTW, I just heard that, if elected, Romney will move the capital to the Cayman Islands.

Paul Ryan is the most respected, by both democrats and republicans. He is also the ONLY republican to win his district in a heavy percentage of Democrat voters and get re-elected by a 15 to 20% margin.

So yeah, it shows Romney has some intelligence.

Ryan has the steel Romney lacks. He won't let those people get away with a thing! If the Dums don't like him, that makes him even more favorable in my eyes! His 'drawbacks' , as you call them, are insurmountable objects for the dums! Odimwit Can't run with his inane , useless fiscal record----Ryan will trounce him every chance he gets. He'll also call him on every lie he's ever told about Odimwitcare! He Knows the hidden costs, and he will hang them out to dry! I think, barring dead voters and rigged voting machines, this ticket has more than an excellent chance. It should be a runaway winner! Imagined reaction of Odimwit and Lyin'Biden at this fantastic announcement Obama and Biden looking scared

With the Romney Ryan approach, programs designed to maintain at least minimal quality of life will end. We must ask ourselves what is better, food stamps or bread lines and mass starvation? Don't think Romney won't watch people starve to death, because we've seen it already in our history from his greedy type. He doesn't even pay any taxes for christ sakes! But he will eventually release his returns after his accountants cook them up real well done.

The only thing Ryan does is sure up the conservative vote. Good for Obama bad for GOP in terms of voter turnout. I think Romney should have picked a minority like Rubio or West to attract new voters and possibly independents. Sad to say but Ryan may be a good VP pick just not on a Romney ticket.

Ryan is one of the better choices, although I would have preferred Condoleezza Rice. Wisconsin is a must-win swing state for Romney, so this helps.

1st of all if Mitt Romney was the nominee he wouldnt be worried about getting Ron Paul delegates to sign affidavits to vote for him in the first round of voting at the convention

2nd Mitt Romney has no chance of beating Obama

Finally someone who will address the real issues affecting America. Paul Ryan is the only one who says without hesitation that Medicare needs to be privatized so that old people pay their fair share to and he also knows that Social Security cannot continue as it is and needs to be reformed or privatized too. Paul Ryan is a real conservative and with him on the ticket Romney will have no choice but to end Obamacare!
