Romney Announces Paul Ryan as His VP Pick: Will He Be Able to Win With This Ticket?

Early Saturday morning, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced that he had chosen Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate for the 2012 presidential election.

42-year-old Ryan, is considered a rising GOP star and the party’s leader on fiscal and budgetary issues. Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee and the architect of the House GOP’s budget proposal, and his selection as Romney’s vice-presidential pick ensures that the economy will be the defining issue of the election.

Ryan’s place on the ticket is sure to appease the party’s conservative wing, which has never fully warmed to the more moderate Romney. In Ryan, they find a like-minded ally who supports dramatic policy solutions to the U.S.’s fiscal woes. Ryan, who is an energetic debater, will bring youthful vigor to the campaign and will help Romney in Wisconsin and across the Midwest.

However, Ryan also comes with some downsides. Thus far, Romney’s campaign has been geared toward making the election a referendum on the president. Now, Romney is tied to a very specific budget plan that has a name and a face and has been widely criticized by Obama and his fellow democrats. In an April speech, Obama called Ryan’s budget plan a "thinly veiled social Darwinism." Romney’s choice in Ryan will certainly energize the GOP base, but it will also energize Democrats who do not want to see “the end of Medicare as we know it.”

So SodaHeads, what do you think about Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate? Will he be able to win with this ticket?

Romney Ryan

    "Social Darwinism", exactly.

BTW, I just heard that, if elected, Romney will move the capital to the Cayman Islands.

Too bad for you but the WSJ Market Watch said federal spending under Obama has increased only 1.4% which is the lowest since Ike in the 50's. But wait it gets worse for you. The NY Times did a study which showed that W's spending since he left office totals $5.07 trillion which went directly to increasing the deficits and the national debt. Sorry this isn't what you wish the truth is.

Too bad for you and all of us but every year Obama has been in office we've had an unprecedented $1 trillion + deficit, and every year Obama has been in office he hasn't received a single vote in favor of the budgets he's submitted, even from Democrats! No, it gets worse and worse for the people of the United States, and Obama increased the number of people on the federal payroll by 2%, which belies those alleged studies you are citing. Oh, you didn't cite a damned thing, did you, you just made a bald claim.

Too bad for you it's not VP nominees that get elected. It wouldn't help Romney if Christ himself came down to help him. I mean Christ can SEE the truth ya know?

Maybe Christ can but it's pretty obvious that you can't see the truth, and that you don't give a damn about the truth if you support Barack Obama, the biggest liar to every occupy the Oval Office.

You are only kidding yourself! Obama is no great debater -- he can't use a teleprompter in a debate. And as studied a liar as Plugs Biden is, Sarah Palin even kicked his ass last election, even though the press let him get away with at least a dozen outright lies in their debate.http://townhall.com/co...

Paul Ryan will make mince meat of Joe Blowhard, the career liar and plagiarist..

JOE BIDEN’S 14 LIES In his debate with Sarah Palin:
    1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

    2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say that specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

    3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

    4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

    5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

    6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: Accord...

    6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

    7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

    8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.

    9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

    10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

    11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

    12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

    13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

    14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Query: Does supporting liars make you a liar too? Just wondering!

All fingers and toes crossed. But I don't think this was the best choice. Ryan will scare away uncommitted and moderate voters who are afraid of his stern policies, although I personally like them. Rubio would have been better and would have given Romney and edge in FL and with Hispanic voters. Ryan adds nothing to OH, MI, PA and key battleground states. Lets hope the voters come to their senses and vote against 4 more.
Which would you rather have R. &R.; or "B.O." ? Clear choice , huh?

I agree that Rubio would have been a better choice. If Obama wins, Australia & New Zealand might find the remaining American citizens who pay taxes and work in the private sector loading on ships, boats & rafts crownding onto their shores.

I would agree with you that Ryan is a complete corporatist scumbag, but calling tax cuts "government handouts" is totally warped. You seem to be coming from the standpoint that everything rightfully belongs to the government, and that all the income the government graciously "lets" people have is a handout. That's not the way things work: People earn money from each other primarily through voluntary exchange, and it's theirs, and then the government extorts a certain amount (like a protection racket), spends it, and then spends more than it took in to top it off. Tax cuts result in less government revenue in general, sure, but equating them with spending is implicitly approaching the situation from a totalitarian point of view.

Paul Ryan is extremely popular with conservatives, libertarians, tea party members, independents and undecided voters. Democrats like him because of his federal budget cut ideas, they erroneously believe that we care that their entitlement programs are going to be targeted in the budget cuts. I'm sure he will save the essentials but all of America has to realize, THE GOVERNMENT IS HERE TO HELP, NOT SUPPORT YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Think of it this way "THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH" everyone pays their way.
