Romney Announces Paul Ryan as His VP Pick: Will He Be Able to Win With This Ticket?

Early Saturday morning, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced that he had chosen Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate for the 2012 presidential election.

42-year-old Ryan, is considered a rising GOP star and the party’s leader on fiscal and budgetary issues. Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee and the architect of the House GOP’s budget proposal, and his selection as Romney’s vice-presidential pick ensures that the economy will be the defining issue of the election.

Ryan’s place on the ticket is sure to appease the party’s conservative wing, which has never fully warmed to the more moderate Romney. In Ryan, they find a like-minded ally who supports dramatic policy solutions to the U.S.’s fiscal woes. Ryan, who is an energetic debater, will bring youthful vigor to the campaign and will help Romney in Wisconsin and across the Midwest.

However, Ryan also comes with some downsides. Thus far, Romney’s campaign has been geared toward making the election a referendum on the president. Now, Romney is tied to a very specific budget plan that has a name and a face and has been widely criticized by Obama and his fellow democrats. In an April speech, Obama called Ryan’s budget plan a "thinly veiled social Darwinism." Romney’s choice in Ryan will certainly energize the GOP base, but it will also energize Democrats who do not want to see “the end of Medicare as we know it.”

So SodaHeads, what do you think about Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate? Will he be able to win with this ticket?

Romney Ryan

    "Social Darwinism", exactly.

BTW, I just heard that, if elected, Romney will move the capital to the Cayman Islands.

Pfft, if your friends asked you to jump off a cliff...would you jump? Unfortunately I live in the UK our government often says, "Can I have a run up?"

We'll stand with you to defend America, I'd personally stand with you. But I will not stand by those that invade other countries for no good reason than revenge and a misguided sense of justice.

Last I checked the US and the UK were friends long before WW2, it's just after a certain point, we became lapdogs, begging for crumbs.

(Edit: We didn't drag you into a European War... the Japanese did)

Too young. Americans are hung up on "age=wisdom", so they don't vote in the young. Romney was doomed, simply because he is a religious candidate, trying to pretend his agenda isn't.... Contradictions have cost more than one decent candidate the election. Look through history, and you will see. Ship jumpers and line crossers do not win presidencies, period. Romney is doomed, no matter what he pulls out of his ass...Just a thought...

Wrong. Obama was elected and he wasn't much older than Ryan but Ryan has a ton more experience and actually held real jobs.

not at all. Ryan was in the Congress since his 20's. He does not appear the intellectual heavyweight that some try to make him out to be.

Perception... That is the name in the political game. How people perceive Ryan, and how they perceive Romney, will be both their undoing. Remember this. Obama was shoved up the assess of the American people, simply by perception. One side wanted to take advantage of the ethnic vote (first viable candidate, remember?). The other side didn't want to be perceived as bigots and racists. It is all about perception.
They fear Romney and his wandering politics, much more that they fear future failures by Obama. After all. Obama has no place to go but up. Romney and Ryan, have the entire free world to gamble away...Just a thought...

For our country's sake, I sure hope they win! Obama has tipped the scale, however, with more than 50% of the population dependent upon the Government so they will vote for the party that keeps spending....very sad. GOT Romney-Ryan....get the idiots out of the white house.

"Rich people need more tax breaks".

"He thinks that our generals are pussies"..

Actually, it seems that Paul "End Medicare" Ryan has been picked by Mitt because HE HAS SEEN MITT ROMNEY'S TAX RETURNS. Mitt was so scared that he chose the man who will cost him the election (BTW, Congressman Ryan will not lose his health care plan when Obama is re-elected, since he is running for Congress and will probably be re-elected. No 'voucher' system in Congress)..

Romney should win anyway but Paul ryan is a definite great pick... Obama has destroyed american values he doesn't even respect the american flag and wants to change our consitution written by great men with good values that's made america the sucess it has become before obama.. If he continues as President america as we know it will end and our children, and grandchildren and their children will suffer. He is a communist and was a socialist country. Please don't vote for obama because u will be voting to destroy our country..

Prove what Democrats love Paul Ryan. His district has been redistricted several times to make it predominately Republican. You just repeat second hand nonsense you hear on TV without an ounce of real information to back it it. Sure, we Democrats love him so much we made ads of him pushing grandma off cliffs and won several republican districts in Congress because of it.
The only reason any Democrat loves Paul Ryan right now is because we are going to destroy him with senior citizens and win states that were teetering.
Your presumptuous comment to a Political Science professor is so hilarious , I can barely keep my sides from aching, or hold back the tears of laughter. But then you right wing nut jobs have a habit of sticking your feet in your big mouths without any thought to what you're saying. What else is new?

We need to be positive about this man Romney because he is our hope to get america back on the right track and stop this destruction of america and our constitution and values that Obama is determined to do... He is our hope and he will be a definite change from what we got now..

What line in the Ryan budget says he will end medicare or Social Security. He is just allowing people who do not need it to opt out. Medicare and SS are failing programs. something HAS to be done to make it solvent again. Had Clinton and Bush not left the SS trust fund so raided... we wouldn't have this bad of a problem now.

And what do u think Obama care will do or do. U even know??? His policys and lack of knowledge has put our country in hardship. He is a failure and and imbarressment to anyone sane.He has brainwashed so many people with his lies. Wake up and go see a good movie its called 2016...our country is in financial debt, lack of leadership, and we need a big change and ryan plan may not be all we want but I have faith its better than obama care. Medicare at the rate its going will be gone anyway.

polls show seniors already like him senior and miltary voted more for mccain
That much-debated gender gap? The generation gap is wider. In a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, most 65-and-older seniors support Romney while young adults under 30 back Obama by almost 2-1. The 18-percentage-point difference in their presidential choices is one of the electorate's biggest demographic divides, and it helps define campaign strategies for both sides.
dont forget obama cut medicare by 700b dollars and his campain director backed it up on meet the press lol.

No, I was refering to your white fratboy who is going to help crush Romney. No that he needs to much help in that area. Mr. Golden Foot in Mouth has been doing a phenomenal job of that all by himself. But an extra push from let's kill Medicare boy isn't going to help him one bit. Naive Cons. You can't touch the third rail of American politics and survive. I can't wait until they drag out the last town hall meeting of Ryan's with a room full of seniors screaming at him. Fun, fun, fun. fuhnm

Clueless Professor completely lacks common sense (typical) and keeps harping on the senior vote, like he owns it (which Obama totally lost in 2008 and will more so this election), but doesn't realize most seniors care a great deal about their grandchildren, thus, going with Romney/Ryan.
