What matters about Rodney King isn't that he used drugs or was a bad person. What matters is that officers of the law, people who we give power over ourselves to, beat an nonresistant man. What matters is his heartfelt plea "Can't we all just get along?".
He wasn't an icon because of who he was, but because what happened to him.
Rodney King was found dead. Another liberal ICON has made it to the happy hunting grounds.

I'm willing to bet, that once the autopsy was made, they will find enough drugs on him, that if they cut him up, and distributed his parts to his friends, his friends will get just as high as RODNEY was.

There was a reason so many were shocked after seeing this video, and a reason why he won 3.8 million from the city. I do not care how mad you are at the guy, there was no call for this. At all. If 7 cops can think of no better way to subdue a single person than to beat him with batons and kick him, they should find a new job clubbing seals or something...
Attacking the victim's character is defensive childishness. He may have been a genuine ass, but it has no bearing on what happened here.
He wasn't an icon because of who he was, but because what happened to him.
King's death was a grim ending to a saga that began 21 years earlier he went for a drive with two friends, eventually leading authorities on a chase after he was spotted speeding. The 25-year-old, on parole from a robbery conviction had been drinking, which he later said led him to try to evade police.

And no, he wasn't a great man. But it wasn't his actions which mattered; it was the fact that the police, who we give huge power over our lives, acted like tyrants in his case.
