Rodney King, the victim of an infamous incident of police brutality in 1991, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool Sunday morning. According to police, there are no signs of foul play, and the death is being ruled as accidental. It will take six to eight weeks for toxicology reports to come through. He was 47 years old at the time of his death.

The 1991 brutality incident made national headlines when a bystander sent in video footage, and the aquittal of three of the officers contributed to the beginning of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Earlier this year, King told The Times, "I sometimes feel like I'm caught in a vise. Some people feel like I'm some kind of hero. Others hate me. They say I deserved it. Other people, I can hear them mocking me for when I called for an end to the destruction, like I'm a fool for believing in peace." Do you think King was an civil rights icon?

King started a dangerous high speed car chase because he was intoxicated and didn't want to violate his parole for a 1989 store robbery. I'm not making excuses for the police brutality. That was uncalled for.

I feel empathy for Reginald Denny, an innocent truck driver who happened to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit on his head by a brick by a black man who didn't give a damn if he killed Denny or not.

In this case, neither, but also, these words aren't antonyms -- he could very well have been a bit of both! He wasn't a good man, but neither were the police officers who beat the crap out of him and they are the ones sworn to uphold the law.

Overall, though, I think we should stop trying to glean some sort of greater message from his death. It's not karmic justice and he's was not a saint or a great American.

He always seeme to come back into the public eye, after the trial, insead of trying to just live a decent life and learn from his experiernces, good and bad, Again all he did start the initial reason for the law to be involved and all the acts to follow.

Do you believe this dude blew through $4 million? It's a good example of the flaw in obama's nirvana robin hood mentality. Taking from the producers and giving to the moochers doesn't work. They'd only squander it anyway!

I agree with you on Obama, and the "redistribution" of wealth issue, BUT this particular incident, or the after-effects, aren't something that can be laid at Obama's door.

Still mad? If it makes you feel any better (Shhh...it's a surprise...) I just got THIS for my boyfriend for his upcoming birthday...

He was on that night in 1991 just a hoodlum, a recalcitrant convicted felon in violation of his parole who thought the rules didn't apply to him, and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not worthy of adulation as a hero or icon. Definitely not one to be grouped with Mahatma Gandhi, Raoul Wallenberg, or the Dalai Lama.

Did he really deserve to get beaten like that...no! White people got mad because their little piggies got exposed for the monsters they can be.

If he had run over a little black child the "little piggies" would have gotten blamed for not stopping him. Personally I'd be fine with letting you burn down your own stores and pulling the "little piggies" out.

given that california has proven to always have had an unacceptable pursuit problem, beating man within an inch of his life was not warranted. There was a point at which this man was no longer a threat beyond covering his head to try to prevent brain damage

maybe, just maybe a glimmer of sense can be placed into their heads. Rodney King was just a man with his own demons. He was not perfect but he certainly did not cause people to feel or view him as a cause of all their troubles. I just point that out with the use of commonsense

A decent man, and he was saved by decent black folks who risked their lives to drive him out of there. The guy who drove was rewarded with a full time job with Denny's company. Since there was a job opening...

Yes, Denny is, along with the descent Black people who helped him. The Black people deserve the accolades as much as Denny deserves sympathy. I saw a Denny video and he is not bitter. He rightfully made the distinction between gangstas and descent people. Glad the guy got the job. The guy that hit Denny went to jail, got out and is back in jail for murder. LOL Go figure.

King was a sick man. Couldn't beat his demons and all that money just made it all worse for him. It's a sad story because I think he really did wish everyone could just get along. A big thought when others were busy with petty thoughts of easy revenge or free TVs.

Maybe because he didn't ask for all this notoriety or to be the center of so much controversy and negative attention for a mistake so many make but never become even page 2 by-lines over...because he was "black." I wish things had gone better for him and he'd had a happier, longer life, and not been so vulnerable to all these demons he carried with him. No one deserved the brutality he got for what he did do, and millions of dollars don't make being beaten so savagely go away or "buy" away the memories of it.

I agree. The police were punished too harshly. King wasn't an agitator, just a common criminal, a thief, a brutalizer of women and a drunk/doper. He'll be missed.
Oh, that's just fine. I'm upset with a verdict so I kill people, beat people, loot stores, burn buildings and cause general mayhem. That says a lot.
When did you ever find Caucasians rioting because they didn't like a verdict? O.J Simpson, for example. He was "Much more a criminal. Much less a man."

I hear you, Caucasians should be rioting because of the Patriot Act, The TSA going inside of baby diapers to look for bombs, the NDAA to arrest/detain/disappear you without trial or jury, and the continued dessimation of the Constitution, huh? I mean WTF I know the Indians would be mad by now.
