Rodney King, the victim of an infamous incident of police brutality in 1991, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool Sunday morning. According to police, there are no signs of foul play, and the death is being ruled as accidental. It will take six to eight weeks for toxicology reports to come through. He was 47 years old at the time of his death.

The 1991 brutality incident made national headlines when a bystander sent in video footage, and the aquittal of three of the officers contributed to the beginning of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Earlier this year, King told The Times, "I sometimes feel like I'm caught in a vise. Some people feel like I'm some kind of hero. Others hate me. They say I deserved it. Other people, I can hear them mocking me for when I called for an end to the destruction, like I'm a fool for believing in peace." Do you think King was an civil rights icon?

King started a dangerous high speed car chase because he was intoxicated and didn't want to violate his parole for a 1989 store robbery. I'm not making excuses for the police brutality. That was uncalled for.

I feel empathy for Reginald Denny, an innocent truck driver who happened to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit on his head by a brick by a black man who didn't give a damn if he killed Denny or not.

I don't believe he was either. He was just an ordinary man caught up in a horrible story of a beating.
When you see the video of him saying "Can we just get along" it makes me cry because he is telling it from his heart. That is what sets him apart from most people who have taken the wrong road. In my opinion he was a good man who just could not get it together.

Some people think that Rodney King was some kind of hero... NOTHING could be further from the truth. Not too many people were ever interested in discovering WHY King was beat like he was... the media flashed the images of the beating, and talked about "police brutality", and that was all that was the public was concerned with. It wasn't until long after, that people actually took note of the reason why King had been pulled over in the first place.

"On the night of March 2, 1991, King and two passengers, Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms, were driving west on the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210) in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Prior to driving on the Foothill Freeway, the three men had spent the night watching a basketball game and drinking at a friend's house in Los Angeles. After being tested five hours AFTER the incident, King's blood-alcohol level was found to be just under the legal limit. This meant that his blood alcohol level was approximately 0.19 —almost two and a half times the legal limit in California— when he was actually driving. At 12:30 am, Officers Tim and Melanie Singer, a husband-and-wife duo of the California Highway Patrol, spotted King's car speeding down the freeway. The officers then pursued King at high speeds as King would not pull over...

Someone who knows the REAL Truth. Also, if you saw the UNEDITED original video, it was evident that he wasn't obeying the officer's orders to "stay down" & so got clobbered.

Yes. yes, some "Cop or Security" types are psychopaths but that's a separate argument.

There's no question why the beating started! I guess King should have complied, and followed commands from officers! I don't think the American people (some of them anyway) will learn to accept the truth even when they don't like it or it's not beneficial to their cause!

But the correct response is to be beaten? Since lynching is no longer legal but police beatings are, ya'll just love to see black men get beaten. Just admit to it and stop hiding behind all of this blubbering.

You want me to admit the issue is his skin color? No thanks!!! I will admit however that you, regardless of your color, have lost my respect and have proven to be as thoughtless and provocative as King was!
Here's a little example to show you how absurd your assertion is.

The only reason you don't agree with what I'm saying is because I'm white! Admit it! Stop hiding behind all your blubbering!

I will agree with you when you show examples of black cops beating white men in similar situations, move the trial to an all black neighborhood and the black cops get off.

I didn't know that you were white. But my white friend, now that you've said that it figures, #1 you agree with the cops and two, I asked was the proper police response was THAT type of beating. There were several instances during the beating where they could have stopped, sat on him and cuffed him. And now you talk about respect! Instead of being so concerned about your respect for me you ought to be concerned about my respect for you. But you don't respect me? Oh yes you respect me. Not only that, you love me. I'm one of those types of black men that makes goose bumps all over you.

Keep on fueling the racial bonfire, but when you get burned, like king did, have some integrity and be a MAN, not a black man, and show some respect for those with the power to teach you respect if you forget!

DROP THE BLACK MAN PITY PARTY! EVERYBODY ELSE HAS!! HERE'S YOUR RACE CARD BACK... IT HAS NO POWER WITH ME!

I HOPE ONE DAY YOU REALIZE YOU ARE ONLY THE VICTIM OF YOURSELF! TIME TO GROW UP AND MOVE PAST SKIN COLOR!

You need to learn how to respect other peoples positions and opinions. This isn't about you. This is about whether or not Rodney King was an icon or an instigator. NOT YOU. IF YOU WAN'T BE BE AN ICON, GO OUT AND DO WHAT HE DID. Take your dumb ass out to a bar, get drunk, cause a riot and get beaten and make the news. Then someone will, or on some blog, start a thread about you. The man was beaten over 50 times to the head and you want to make this a black man's pity party? Considering your position on this, I wouldn't expect you have respect for anyone who insists on demanding fair treatment at the hands of law enforcement. Because that is what this was about, FAIR TREATMENT FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE POLICE HAD PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO HANDCUFF HIM. THIS IS THE ISSUE, THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT I'VE SEEN BEATEN LIKE THIS ARE BLACK, RED AND BROWN PEOPLE. I HAVE NOT SEEN WHITES NOR YELLOW PEOPLE BEATEN THIS WAY. ALTHOUGH I HAVE DEFINITELY SEEN WHITES BEHAVE THE WAY RODNEY KING DID AND WORSE. BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN A WHITE PERSON BE SAVAGELY BEATEN THE WAY RODNEY KING DID. They were trying to kill him. And no one should have to be savagely beaten by 5 or more cops over a police chase. GET REAL. Now, if you insist on making this about you, then you're an IDIOT.

" IF YOU WAN'T BE BE AN ICON, GO OUT AND DO WHAT HE DID. Take your dumb ass out to a bar, get drunk, cause a riot and get beaten and make the news. "

Thats how one becomes an icon! I had it all wrong.
    But you also say that,

"You need to learn how to respect other peoples positions and opinions."

NO, I DON'T. I RESPECT THE PERSON BEHIND THE OPINION, BUT IF THE OPINION IS ABSURD IT DESERVES NO RESPECT! ie, YOUR SELF DEFEATING OPINION AS STATED ABOVE.

" Considering your position on this, I wouldn't expect you have respect for anyone who insists on demanding fair treatment at the hands of law enforcement." ----------HOLD ON!!!
SO, TO GET RESPECT AND FAIR TREATMENT, WE NEED TO DISRESPECT AUTHORITY FIGURES, IGNORE THEIR DEMANDS OF US AND REUSE TO COMPLY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME RUNNING AWAY LIKE A 2YR OLD!
YOU SUPPORT KINGS BEHAVIOR AND DISRESPECT FOR POLICE AND YOU THINK YOU STAND IN A POSITION TO TELL ME ABOUT RESPECT!

I'm talking about Rodney King though. I remember the incident, I was 32, Were you even born then? I've seen too many instances where white guys where armed and it's a stand off with the cops. A black guy is unarmed and he's beaten or shot. This happens too many times. A black guy reaches for his wallet and shot. Driving away from party and is shot. Call the police because they are in danger and they are shot. This happens to many times.

-- All this tells us is that black men apparently often times reach for a gun, not their wallet. Maybe following commands would help! Hard to shoot someone who listens and has his hands in the air!

Hard to shoot someone who listens...? You obviously hate blacks. There is no point in having a dialogue with you. The man was unarmed and was shot 41 times. In your opinion, he was wrong and you have absolutely no consideration for him or his family.

A black man here was stopped for a DUI, searched, cuffed and placed in the squad car. Now he was cuffed and all he wore was some shorts. No shirt. He was very slight of build. The cops claimed he pulled a 25cal, while his hands were cuffed behind his back. They claimed he pointed the gun at them while they stood outside the cruiser and shot him dead while he was handcuffed in the cruiser. You ever have handcuffs on you? No? Ask someone. They hurt. Your arms and hands can be only in ONE position and if you move them cuffs dig in. How can someone conceal pistol after a police search and draw it and point it out the window with cuffs on? The verdict? Acquittal! The shooting was found justified! Now, show me some white examples with black cops shooting them.

Matthew was a tax collector. Mark was the "avg Joe". Luke a Dr. and Historian, John was an eyewitness.
The Gospels all tell the same historical events. They simply tell them from 4 different view points. Since they are all a record of the same events, how does one "steal" or "borrow" from another?
Out of curiosity and with all do respect, what makes you think the "dudes" ( inspired by God ) got it wrong and you are right?

I recognize more than a dozen gospels, most fundies too reliant on John. I routinely use apocrypha & other non-canonical works equal credit with the rest of the bible. Every bible extant today (same for koran, etc) is the work of Man, Jerimiah 17:5 says 'don't trust the work of man' so where does that place the bible?

I believe in God, just don't trust anybody working for Him.

If you believe in God then you would believe what God says. You deny what he says in the Bible because you believe in YOU and not in God. The Bioble was written by God! Man simply put pen to paper. For example. Stephen Hawkings has written numerous books, but Stephen Hawking hasn't actually written anything since his childhood. He tells others what to write. Why is it so hard to understand that God, who you claim to believe in, could inspire others to physically write his words?

Every person has their own 'cell phone' connection with the Custodian (Metaphor) and interprets this (if they allow) in a very personal way. I quote Tzu & Isaiah:

The tao that can be told
    is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named
    is not the eternal Name…

How vastly different God's thoughts are from ours! Here is what He thinks about our indifference to Him and about showing mercy and love to us…

Combine those with Jerry 17:5, every utterance by any sentient should be initially taken as suspect because Egos can't be fully impartial.

Use them as guidelines, not rules. Judeochristianity talks about Sin, Sufism talks about Ego & Buddhism talks about Desire, Anger, Doubt etc. Therefore I conclude they all promote CONDUCT through Good Work rather than Materialism &/or Ignorance

I've figured out (Deism) for Myself through working Mysticism & Natural Philosophy through Quantum Mechanics & Compatibilism.

Have a different concept of Determinism & Time than most Folk.

Doubt is not a pleasanat condition, but certainty is a ridiculous one.
    - Voltaire

I can live with doubt & uncertainty. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than than to have answers which might be wrong.
    - Richard P. Feynman

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered.
Religion is answers that may never be questioned.

Agitator in the sense that he became a symbol for the agitators. He himself did not really want to play the game. His famous quote sort of summed up his feelings. Even though he was in violation of several statues at the time of the incident, in the aftermath, he showed dignity, and did not really try to exploit his media-induced notoriety, nor did he allow Jesse and Al to parade him out on all possible occasions. I have to hand it to him for that. He knew that his actions contributed to the officers' "zeal", and he accepted the outcome of the resultant trials of the officers.
