Rodney King, the victim of an infamous incident of police brutality in 1991, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool Sunday morning. According to police, there are no signs of foul play, and the death is being ruled as accidental. It will take six to eight weeks for toxicology reports to come through. He was 47 years old at the time of his death.

The 1991 brutality incident made national headlines when a bystander sent in video footage, and the aquittal of three of the officers contributed to the beginning of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Earlier this year, King told The Times, "I sometimes feel like I'm caught in a vise. Some people feel like I'm some kind of hero. Others hate me. They say I deserved it. Other people, I can hear them mocking me for when I called for an end to the destruction, like I'm a fool for believing in peace." Do you think King was an civil rights icon?

    King started a dangerous high speed car chase because he was intoxicated and didn't want to violate his parole for a 1989 store robbery. I'm not making excuses for the police brutality. That was uncalled for.

    I feel empathy for Reginald Denny, an innocent truck driver who happened to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit on his head by a brick by a black man who didn't give a damn if he killed Denny or not.

    Rodney King was a human being who made mistakes like everyone else... How quickly judgmental people forget that...

    Human? Granted. Mistakes? Perhaps, but not like everyone else. Am I being judgmental? Yes. He deserves to be judged.

    If he was beating you, would you call it a MISTAKE? Would you be judgmental?

    November 3, 1989: King, brandishing a TIRE IRON, ordered a convenience store clerk to empty the cash register. The clerk grabbed the tire iron, causing King to fall backwards and knock over a pie rack. King SWUNG the rack at the clerk and fled the store with $200.

    After all, he is a human being (notoriously know to be the most deadly animals on the planet) and deserves respect. Don't be judgmental, though. Remember we are human beings and all have made mistakes.

    If you have a daughter, would you like to see her date/marry someone of such character? Would you worry about her being beaten, perhaps to death while he is in a drunken/drugged state? Tell me. "Inquiring minds want to know."

    It's easy to look at the good side of evil people when you don't have to be involved with them. If you are, you're a loser.

    mis·take - an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.

    I'm not condoning anything hes done AND I'm not too high and mighty to judge others as tho I am better. He was an addict and hes admitted that. He did wrong and he admitted that...
    I'm not going to agree with you so you might as well stop while you're at it
  • Bill Wilde~M... 2012/06/20 13:08:33

    I will stop. But thank you for your litany of excuses. Oh, he raped her but he apologized. Oh, he beat her but he apologized. Oh, he did all of these terrible things but he admitted that he did wrong.

    These mistakes were not like, say, forgetting to mail out a bill on time, spilling milk on the floor. Those are simple every day mistakes. Beating ones wife and daughter is more than a mistake for which he can apologize for and simply admit to and be exonerated.

    Oh, he committed such a terrible mis·take - an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.
    Wait until you are on the receiving end someday. Let's hear all of this liberal crap being spewed by you then. Good luck.

    If you were to replace Denny on the ground, what would you expect?
    Since you are a human, would you throw a brick into someones face, especially since that person had nothing whatsoever to do with what caused the riot? I guess you wouldn't mind being beaten or killed since it was humans involved. What do you expect?

    For whatever reason, the riots happened. King, the cops, the verdict. There are other ways to remedy grievances other than pulling a man out of his truck and almost killing him. Pure racism on the assaulter's part. BTW He is in jail for murder.

    Yes, and OJ beat the system and that of course means, blacks get the same treatment in court as blacks.
    Angry people have trouble seeing the whole picture, sometimes. You need to not think in terms of execptions.

    Yep, O.J. beat the system and he was guilty, too.

    {blacks get the same treatment in court as blacks.}
    Blacks commit more crimes so they get caught more often and get sent to jail. What do you want from me?

    {Angry people have trouble seeing the whole picture, sometimes.}
    Well, if someone is angry with you and has trouble seeing the whole picture sometimes and smashes your face with a brick when you did nothing wrong but be there, write to me from your hospital bed on SH and tell me what you think. Your sympathy and empathy is misplaced. You are very paternalistic to black people; Oh, it's OK. It's all our fault." "Oh, we brought you over here in chains as slaves so you can be angry with us if that helps you vent."
    Oh, the white man is so bad so it's OK to riot and loot and burn. I understand."

    {You need to not think in terms of execptions.}
    If you thought that those few links were "exceptions", I have many more that I can provide for you on "killing white babies" and more blacks attacking whites for NO reason whatsoever. They are not here with clean hands either. I don't make exceptions or excuses for them and neither would I for the Klan.

    I will never condone the actions of the police who brutally beat this man within an inch of his life, they were no less criminal than he was. however,his criminal past speaks for itself so, to ever think of him as an icon, is reprehensible.

    And? i was merely explaining how brutally he was beaten.it has nothing to do with Denny being near death as i agree he was. the 2 incidents are just as criminal as the other. even though King survived the beating.

    Many on the left believe that King was nearly "beaten to death." It was said on "The Ed Schultz Show" (on MSNBC) a few days ago. This wasn't necessarily meant for your edification, but others read these posts who are not aware of this. It's easy to Google but most accept what Ed says as fact. Ed also proclaimed that Stuart Libby outed Valerie Plame. Not true. It was Richard Armitage but Libby was charged with something unrelated to Plame or the CIA.

    It was the black-gangsta community that led to those riots. Did Caucasians riot after O.J. got off? Burn their own neighborhoods, loot, beat, shoot and cause other innocent, people to suffer? I sure don't remember that. If you have videos, please send them along.

    Actually neither of the choices, he was simply an ahole, known by police for getting into trouble before the beating, and never could stay out of trouble after either. He was just another ahole who happened to fall into celebrity status because someone caught him being beaten by cops on camera, not for anything he personally accomplished or contributed to mankind.

    A victim of his own making. This parolee endangered the public while evading arrest, attacked arresting authorities and was so stoned, he couldn't feel enough to know to stop resisting arrest. When he sobered up, he was not apologetic but cried, "Why can't we just get along" in a quest for sympathy. The video only showed the end of the event, not the beginning. Upon viewing all the evidence, the jury acquitted the arresting officers of brutality charges.

    It is a pity, however, that substance abuse robbed him of his three score, and 10.

    His pseudo innocent-sounding, "Can't we just all get along?" was just meaningless, publicity-baiting crap IMO.

    I wish his family well in any time of grief, and I wish no hardship or suffering on him or anyone in the midst of his death, but I have no respect for that disgrace.
