Rodney King, the victim of an infamous incident of police brutality in 1991, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool Sunday morning. According to police, there are no signs of foul play, and the death is being ruled as accidental. It will take six to eight weeks for toxicology reports to come through. He was 47 years old at the time of his death.

The 1991 brutality incident made national headlines when a bystander sent in video footage, and the aquittal of three of the officers contributed to the beginning of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Earlier this year, King told The Times, "I sometimes feel like I'm caught in a vise. Some people feel like I'm some kind of hero. Others hate me. They say I deserved it. Other people, I can hear them mocking me for when I called for an end to the destruction, like I'm a fool for believing in peace." Do you think King was an civil rights icon?

King started a dangerous high speed car chase because he was intoxicated and didn't want to violate his parole for a 1989 store robbery. I'm not making excuses for the police brutality. That was uncalled for.

I feel empathy for Reginald Denny, an innocent truck driver who happened to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit on his head by a brick by a black man who didn't give a damn if he killed Denny or not.

Yes i knew this long ago. I too made a poll about him. He was a crack addict and they didn't show the beginning of the incident where he was kicking and punching and spitting and completely resisting, they could not take him down so they called in more cops and they beat him till he was restrained and then some but they were extremely pissed.

Agitating can be a good thing. He dealt with alcoholism so he was too human to be an icon. But his plea for us to get along was enough agitation to start a spark of civil conversation. I think he was a good guy who endured a great injustice that he wouldn't have suffered if the police weren't sure no one would notice. An icon like MLKjr wasn't beaten like a rabid dog because it would be noticed, he was assassinated.

For a moment, Rodney King was a great man and his plea for peace IS iconic.

Poor old Rodders, silly old sod. He was pissed and fell in the pool. Personally I prefer this Rodney, he's not such a big prat.

I hope this was one of those smart ass jokes. I know this question wasn't asked. and if it wasn't before everyone tries to slam me with your kidding. don't you see i'm saying ahead of time. I'm tired and have so much crap going on in my life that you wanting to argue of Rodney isn't worth it.

Would have helped if you had a couple more choices...like "Both" or Neither"....He was really a bit of both...he was a double victim, 1) his own drinking and stupidity, and 2) police brutality. He was also an "icon", with his famous "Why can't we all just get along?" speech. That was a genuine attempt to stop the violence...62 people killed, hundreds wounded, over 5000 business and homes burned, multi-millions of dollars worth of property stolen...3 to 4 days of upheaval...I was there, in Long Beach, saw it all...

What matters about Rodney King isn't that he used drugs or was a bad person. What matters is that officers of the law, people who we give power over ourselves to, beat an nonresistant man. What matters is his heartfelt plea "Can't we all just get along?".

He wasn't an icon because of who he was, but because what happened to him.

You evidently only saw the "edited'" video. Even then, still no excuse for parents to teach their children it's OK to steal from from the 'Honkies".

No. I watched the full video.

And when did he ever say that it was "OK to steal from the 'Honkies'"?

I seem to remember a different plea: "Can't we all just get along?"

I can't say how i know. What was missing was the brutal attack on the cops. He resisted with everything he had, he kicked and punched and spit, they thought he was on angel dust.

Riiiight, you have soopir-sekrit information that would have exonerated the cops but they decided not to publicize it.

WOW!! Who cares if he did drugs, who cares if he's evil, that has nothing to do with his encounter with the police....RIGHT? Are you really that naive? SUPPORT EVIL AND ILLEGAL ACTIONS, RESIST YOUR PROTECTORS AND PEACE KEEPERS! COMMIT CRIMES, DO DRUGS, BE BAD...
BEAT UP PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT SKIN COLOR, AND WHEN THE POLICE GIVE A TASTE OF YOUR OWN MEDICINE, CRY LIKE A BABY AND PROVE TO THE WORLD HOW STUPID YOU REALLY ARE!
I'm sure glad the majority has a better grasp their morals than you do!

Well, my mother isn't a drug using, cracked out, alcoholic who fled from police after recently being paroled after serving a sentence for beating a convenience store clerk while robbing the store. My mother doesn't cruise under the influence on a mission to hook up with 2 of her, equally intoxicated friends at speeds of nearly 120 mph to avoid being arrested. My mother has no criminal record whatsoever, so I find it unlikely that she would decide to disobey police orders and charge at police (before the camera was rolling) again to avoid capture as well as several parole violations.

However, if she did suddenly take on the attitude that she's better than the law and she resisted being arrested while drunk and high after leading police on a high speed chase and risked the lives of those around her with no respect and then attacked police offers as a last resort...then YEAH I'D BE FINE IF THE POLICE ONLY BEAT HER UP A LITTLE, CONSIDERING THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO USE DEADLY FORCE BUT DIDN'T!

Actually, the camera WAS rolling and picks up King getting out of the car and charging the police. I saw it when it first happened but from them on the news outlets only pick up AFTER the charge. I did find it on YouTube and saved it in one of my bookmark-folders but I can;t find it now. I was surprised to see that it still exists. If I can find it, I will send you the link.

They have a funny way of delivering the truth in the news, don't they! What kind of story would that be though? Man, drunk and high "charges" at police, and loses! That story is all too common place today.

I know. Ed Schultz does it all the time. Libby outed Valerie Plame (it was actually Richard Armatige), Rodney King nearly beaten to death (actually, NOT), Obama as a "black cloud" over D.C. when he edited Rick Perry's tape, Santorum wants to eliminate birth control (NOT true) and many other things. All that I want is the truth, not political hackers.

I couldn't agree more! The truth isn't popular though! Telling the truth means acknowledging and accepting the reality of the most hated word in the world... CONSEQUENCE!
How does one avoid consequence? Easy, contrived ignorance or they choose ignorance! That is to say, "I didn't "KNOW"! How can anyone be held accountable for doing something wrong if they didn't know?
    RIGHT?
A drug smuggler lives by this mentality. When caught, the explanation given is, it's not my package, I was just asked to deliver it. I don't know whats in it! The "Don't tell me, I don't want to know" while a along knowing all too well exactly what it is they don't want to know.
The media just caters to the no accountability, no consequence mentality!

You're right. The funniest ones I've seen are on the ID channel. Here they are, on freaking VIDEO TAPE and they tell the police, "Dat ain't me." LOL If my mother was on video tape that clearly committing a crime I would have to say, "Throw her in jail. She's guilty"

CHICAGO (CBS) – Another sweltering weekend brought more violence to Chicago’s streets – with eight people killed and 45 others wounded in shootings or stabbings between Friday afternoon and early Monday morning.

Weekend of violence claims 10 shooting victims across Chicago

At least 10 people were killed, including a 6-year-old girl, in shootings over the weekend in Chicago.
The slain were among at least 49 people wounded in shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, according to information compiled by the Chicago Tribune.

Where is Jessie? Where is Al? Where is ABC, NBC & CBS down there investigating. Oh, poor Rodney King. The hell with Reginald Denny, he only got his face smashed in for no reason other than being Caucasian.

I'm sick of it too. If only someone would step up (liberals) and say that this is wrong.

I guess you never saw the video, Mr King never gave in to the police during his arrest trying to get something out of the wast band of his pants. If the cops had just shot him instead of using their sticks to keep him from getting what they had to assume was a gun King would have died that night and LA would never had burned. The police have their hands tied if they shoot the suspect who is a theat to their safety they are said to be over reacting and if they use their sticks it's police brutality.
