RNC Backfire: Familiarity Breeds Contempt for Romney and the Republicans

Some people believe learning more about someone or something will lead to greater understanding and affection, but often, humans like other people less the more familiar they become with them unless they are close family members, and even then it is not always a guarantee there is genuine fondness between two individuals. One of the goals of the Republican convention in Tampa this week is to allow more Americans to “get acquainted” with Willard Romney and the Republican Party, but after the first day of the convention, it is safe to invoke the old idiom that “familiarity breeds contempt,” and the GOP gave the American people sufficient reasons to hold them in contempt. Obviously, they appeal to a certain segment of the population, but between their draconian platform, lies about President Obama, and apparent racism, most decent human beings find them angry, mean-spirited, and contrary to everything that made this country great.
It is difficult to find the exact words to accurately portray Republicans and their supporters, but one thing in particular stands out; they hate this country, gays, minorities and especially women. The Republican platform gives Libertarians reason to celebrate and it is not surprising since they have embraced the notion of privatizing the government for ages. The highlights of the “libertarian plank” are returning to the gold standard, privatizing Medicare and slashing Medicaid, and “protecting access to ammunition.” Despite the rash of mass shootings recently, Republicans said, “We oppose legislation intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban” enacted in 1994 that included a ban on “large capacity ammunition feeding devices.” The ban expired in 2004.
The GOP platform’s assault on women is particularly contemptible, and to say Republicans are anti-choice is an understatement, and not just for the personhood amendment Americans have rejected time and time again. The language Republicans used to allegedly “affirm the dignity of women by protecting the sanctity of human life” includes a canard to cover their bible-based prohibitions on abortion. According to Republicans, “numerous studies have shown that abortion endangers the health and well-being of women, and we stand firmly against it,” even in the case of rape, incest, or the health of the mother according to the personhood amendment aspect of the plank. The Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security reforms Republicans are promoting will affect women who make up 70% of Medicaid beneficiaries that if enacted will drop 14-27 million people from its rolls by 2021, and raising the retirement age for Social Security will mean 20-million more elderly Americans will be in poverty and remove the only source of income for one-third of women over 65.
The past three years have been brutal for public sector workers with over 780,000 jobs lost in Republican-controlled states that has adversely affect the economy, but Republicans are calling for reducing more public sector jobs and “adjusting pay scales and benefits to reflect those of the private sector.” It is important to remember that Willard Romney considers $19,000 annual salary a good, solid middle-class income and many Republicans have pushed the idea of eliminating the minimum wage because it is not in the Constitution. Republicans want more Americans living in poverty and they are on pace to achieve their goal in they win big in November.
In a deliberate slap at homosexuals and single parent households, Republicans included a section that is stunning in its authoritarian imposition of religious fundamentalism. It says, “We believe that marriage, the union of one and one woman is a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage.” The document’s language appears, on first glance, to support single-parent families with “We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, but children in intact married families are physically and emotionally healthier” so traditional families “must be upheld as the national standard.” The wording is straight out of the conservative Christian agenda and signals the beginning of American theocracy.
Despite the despicable turn-of-the-19th century platform, the conduct of the Republican delegates revealed the true sentiments of those who aspire to control the direction of this country. When Permanent Organization Chairwoman Zori Fonalledas began to speak, the attendees shouted “USA, USA” over her to express their outrage and there are conflicting reports if their hate was at a Puerto Rican, or new rules disallowing Ron Paul supporters. Whatever the commotion was about, their hate and anger superseded respect for a fellow Republican and it took RNC national chairman Reince Preibus to quiet the audience and beg them to show respect. As pathetic as shouting down a high-ranking Republican with an accent was, it paled in comparison to multiple confirmed reports of Republicans throwing nuts at an African American camerawoman working for CNN while saying “this is how we feed animals!” However, no-one should be surprised after Republican candidates for president have spent the past six months using racism as a campaign message to attract white voters and none are as guilty as Willard Romney.
If Republicans were attempting to make an impression on voters, they certainly revealed themselves as mean-spirited with no love for the American people or this country. One after another speaker took to the stage and spouted lie after lie about President Obama’s handling of the economy and purported that they have the answer to save America. Chris Christie gave a self-aggrandizing keynote speech that espoused the virtue of speaking honestly to the American people about the “tough choices” necessary to return America to its former glory despite that Republicans destroyed the economy and ran up the nation’s deficit, all the while chanting that “deficits don’t matter,” unless a Democrat is in the White House.

Gee, I didn't hear any of this and I watched most of the GOP convention.
"despite that Republicans destroyed the economy and ran up the nation’s deficit, all the while chanting that “deficits don’t matter,”
Where do you get your information? It was the democrats that created the financial crash
of 2007, starting with the CRA which forced banks to give housing loans to persons,
who, couldn't repay them. ACORN, SEIU and community organizers were people
doing sit-ins in bank offices to extort those loans. It was compounded by the refusal
of Democrats to regulate FM&FM; during the Bush years when people like Bush and
McCain had congressional hearings into FM&FM;, but key Democrats like Barney
Franks and Chris Dodd said there was no problem......
And then then 0bama came in and passed a $800billion stimulus which was squandered on
crony capitalism rewarding donors like Solyndra and paying salaries of government
union employees........ few if any jobs were created. So when you say the
"Republicans destroyed the economy and ran up the nation’s deficit", it seems you
don't know of what the h*ll you talk. Get some facts to back up your 'sweeping accusations".
I have no love lost for the corrupt and fraudulent activities of the RNC throughout this campaign season and especially the way rules were changed to block and make irrelevant the delegates of Ron Paul.
I will still vote for Ron Paul if Romney is removed for his illegal activities for which he is under investigation. I doubt the Justice Department, corrupt in it's own right, will do squat as they have not charged Holder with his illegal Fast and Furious guns for drugs scheme, or Corzine for his theft of 1.6 billion dollars of depositors money in MF Global, or the impostor, Obama himself, for portraying himself as a natural born American with several names, several birth places, several birth certificates, several social security numbers, etc., etc.
As much as I hate the sight of the impostor and the corrupt masters to whom he bows, and his obvious hatred for all things American including our Constitution, I have decided four more years (probably many fewer but at the most) of him is better or probably about the same as years of the flip flopper, the recipient of all the back room deals and fraud done to Ron Paul. So I ...

So I will vote for Obummer. And as our economic vitality crumbles along with our society he will be the target of scorn, ridicule, blame, and maybe even impeachment. For he will be in the drivers seat.
Of course, there is the strong possibility that the impostor will create a situation wherein he will have the need to declare martial law to protect us from ourselves (like the TSA does). So there is the possibility that there will be no election. Dictator Obama to the rescue. In which case I won't have to hold my nose as I press the buttons.
Have a nice weekend!
This is theoretically inaccurate. Neither party is 100% right nor 100% wrong! Let's discuss the ISSUES and not the actions of a staged event.
WHATT'SA MATTER??? ARE YOU SO EMBARRASSED BY THE STUPIDITY OF YOUR POLL THAT YOU CAN'T SHOW YOUR OWN FACE?
It's only when you talk to a Progressive or Liberal that the difference in one's skin color or gender or sexual orientation becomes important. It takes a bigot and racist to notice those differences and then to divide up America based on them. Things like race, gender, sexual orientation didn't enter into any aspect of the convention because all are viewed as Americans. That was plainly evident in listening to all of the speakers.
The topics of those speakers were love of family, love of country and faith in one's religion.
The convention had speakers from all aspects of our society. A lot of them were women.
Sexual orientation was never mentioned because it is a non-factor.
You really need to get over the divisive nature you have, PP.
It does no one any good . . . no one . . . in fact it harms.
The only mean-spiritedness I saw was when I flipped to the MSNBC channel to get its take on the convention. I could only stand about 5 minutes because of the hate and negativity. How anyone can watch that channel, I cannot understand. Exposure to that hate and negativity must have an adverse affect on one's mental health and outlook.
This piece also shows where Progressive hearts are: to destroy families and raise all kids in government dormitories.
And I don't believe those anecdotes for one second.
But your racism denial is getting old. There IS racism in this country but it is much easier
to find it on the left.
Where is unemployment the worst for black and brown people in this country? BLUE STATES.
Who forces black and brown kids to remain in failing schools they will not send their own kids to? LIBERALS.
Who knows those black and brown kids don't vote but the teachers unions are powerful political allies? DEMOCRATS.
When liberal/democrats deny employment and good education to minorities there is no worse racism.
Who is the leading group when it comes to opening new businesses in this country? HISPANICS. Those Hispanics ARE building those businesses THEMSELVES. They are NOT waiting for the left to provide for them. The smart ones know that they only matter to democrats at election time. Otherwise they are ignored. Just like Obama and the democrats ignored them and immigration reform when they had a bloc that the Republicans COULD NOT stop.
Obama supported gay marriage, UNTIL, he ran for President, suddenly he decided he was against it. Then come election time when the gays were not writing checks he decided that once again he was for it. Even then he did not call ...

Obama supported gay marriage, UNTIL, he ran for President, suddenly he decided he was against it. Then come election time when the gays were not writing checks he decided that once again he was for it. Even then he did not call for anything to be done about it but decided it was a 'states rights" issue.
