Republican Platform Calls for Value-added Tax Scheme

photoAnn Romney says you can trust her husband.

Probably the most memorable moment of the Republican dog and pony
show in Tampa earlier this week occurred when Ann Romney said “you can
trust Mitt.” She didn’t elaborate, but Mitt’s handlers did. They
promised Mitt will restore fiscal responsibility, expand the military,
and cut taxes.

The last one is betrayed by the Republican platform.

“The 2012 Republican Platform calls for a complete overhaul of the
federal tax system. No surprise there. But then it endorses a
value-added tax or national sales tax as one possible solution to the
nation’s budget problems. This is shocking,” writes Jim McTague for Barron’s.

In order to sell this, the Republicans say they will only move to
institute a value added tax – a tax that confiscates money at all stages
of the production process – but only if the Sixteenth Amendment is
repealed.

In 1909, a Republican Congress devised the Sixteenth amendment. It
allows the government to levy an income tax without apportioning it
among the states. It was ratified in 1913 despite the fact it undermines
the constitutional requirements regarding direct taxes.

In January, Romney refused to rule out a value-added tax,
which is a hidden tax and more politically acceptable. Herman Cain’s
9-9-9 tax plan also had a VAT (as represented by the last 9), and
Romney’s supposed Tea Party friendly vice president pick, Paul Ryan,
included a value-added tax in his “roadmap” scheme.

Obama and the Democrats also like the VAT idea because they realize
increasing income taxes on the rich will not generate the revenue they
require to keep expanding the size of government. Obama has said
he thinks value-added taxes are “something that has worked for other
countries.” Obama and the Democrats have not specifically called for a
VAT because they are politically addicted to the class warfare mantra
that brings disgruntled Americans to the polls.

Both Democrats and Republicans love confiscatory taxation, they just
disagree on the best way to force it on the American people. Republicans
are especially squeamish about open taxation because they have spent
the last few decades claiming they are the party of small government and
minimal taxation, which is of course a lie.

Despite all the self-serving rhetoric, Republicans have worked
closely with Democrats to impose more taxes on working middle class
Americans. The latest example is the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act,
which is, despite its misleading title, an internet sales tax. “They
introduced their internet tax as an amendment to a Senate small business
bill, but that bill stalled. Now they are confident they can sneak the internet tax into a lame duck session of Congress, just in time for Christmas shopping,” Erick Erickson wrote for RedState in July. A lot of Republicans love the idea.

Romney also favors cap-and-trade and a carbon tax, although he has
addressed the issue obliquely in order to pretend he is some kind of
“conservative” opposed to further decimating the middle class with
taxation. In 2007, when asked if he was in favor of adopting carbon
taxes, Romney said: “Carbon tax? That’s something we’re looking into.” Romney’s economic adviser, Gregory Mankiw, took to the pages of the New York Times in September of 2007 and argued in favor of carbon taxes.

And people still won't believe the DNC and the RNC are working together to destroy America and our Constitution as they (both) embrace the 1916 Platform of the Socialist Party of America.

OMG if that's true, Romney was right: we're going to end up like Europe (since they do it already)

What I understood was either the adoption of the Fair Tax or a flat tax. The VAT would be dead from the start.

Right now only 50% are paying taxes, how fair is that? Clearly, taxes need a complete overhaul, the IRS included!!! I trust Ryan-Romney a heck of allot more than that empty suit-chair, Obama and his flunky commies - Valerie Jarett, Reid, Biden and Holder.... I'm sure Ryan will set Romney straight on cap and trade, carbon tax, etc... And, if he doesn't the American people will. Difference between Romney and Obama - Romney has the ability to listen to the American people for whom he works for.

It is all part of full income tax reform - VAT is one of the ideas, flat tax, fair tax and so on

We all should agree that our tax code needs to be tossed and start over - Romney and Ryan know that there must be reform of income taxes. They will be looking at all of it.

If you are talking about a VAT and abolishing the income tax, IRS, and all it's convoluted loop hole ridden BS codes, I'm all for it. Combination of the two, no way. No internet tax to the fed. Weed out all overlaps of services and jurisdictions. Reign in the Army Corps of Engineers. I can tell you horror stories about design flaws, cost of change orders, the submitals process and REQUIREMENTS for materials that no longer or even never have existed. How even though they approve submitted materials, that approval is non binding on their part. How they have people writing safety regulations that when they write them they even say straight out that the purpose is not for safety. Quick example, lanyards for body harnesses. They added a requirement to the hook to have the gate labeled as well as the hook itself. This cost the company I was working for at the time 3 grand in new lanyards. Same lanyard exactly, same test process exactly. This would not be bad if they included this information in the bid package so you can plan for it. They changed the requirement midway into the job. 25 lanyards had to be removed from the job site and replaced with the more expensive "properly" stamped lanyards. We were prohibited from doing high work until we acquired the new lanyards. Not just us, ...

Contractors who regularly deal with this BS know they are going to have to deal with it and charge accordingly. So many things that need to be done to get spending under control.

a VAT tax is worse than the income tax, because it's completely hidden. They could raise it to something ridiculous like 50% and we'd be none-the-wiser.

that said, I would prefer a sales/consumption tax over the income tax. Just don't hide it. See the FairTax.

T.E.A. Party was formed under this meaning:
    Taxed Enough Already
People like Romney and Paul Ryan were our targets and our goal was to keep them out of office or keep them from being re-elected.

Just taxing the rich and cutting social programs won't come close to balancing the budget.

The real wealth of America actually lies with the MIDDLE CLASS. It's going to take all three to balance the budget:

    1) Tax the wealthy at 39.5% (start with those over $250,000.00/year)
    2) Eliminate many social programs (start with those that are duplicates of other programs then trim the fat) and trim back the military spending by the Pentagon (yes, it can be and should be done and when done correctly places no strain on the defense of our country)
    3) Introduce the VAT

The States are required to balance the State Budget: The Federal Government should receive the same mandate.

    balance the budget
