He could have suffered an aggressive schizophrenic episode from repressed rage and pent up stress,he was a quiet recluse,perhaps he was bullied. It may be plausible that this aggressive persona that manifested took the name of the joker,schizophrenia would explain the lack of memory and the change in appearance. One persona cannot recall the manifested personas actions....either that or he is in denial

He should soon remember when he's gloating about it to other inmates if he gets the chance. He should soon remember when he is on his deathbed and during one of life's stranger moments he gets a sense of regret for what he has done.

He will definitely remember when the faces of all the people he killed that day haunt him in his sleep and in every hour that he continues to exist.
