Remembering Peter Fecher, Born Jan 14, 1944, Berlin. Died August 17, 1962 on the Berlin Wall.

Dwight-AFCL>dogsbody 2012/08/17 18:32:29
Fifty years ago this month a young man died trying to gain freedom from oppression. He was not killed by a soldier or officer of an enemy state. He was killed by his own country men for the crime of trying to leave his city of birth. For the past year citizens of East Berlin and East Germany had been denied the freedom of leaving. Not of entering their State, but of leaving it.

18 year old Peter Fecher was not the first to die just for trying to leave, but he became famous for being one of the first to die tangled in the concertina wire strung along the year old Berlin Wall, and under the watching eyes of Western military guards.

Peter Fecher was just one person who was killed for not submitting to a totalitarian State and philosophy that demands a person do just that. Submitt oneself to its demands and live the life the State and social philosophy requires of you. To become less than your self in service of the State.

Peter Fecher was just 18 years older than myself when he was killed by an East German Border Guard for daring to hope for something better than being a cog in a machine. He would have been 68 now with a full life behind him. Instead his dead or dying imagine is all we have of Peter Fecher to remind us that Freedom and Liberty are worth taking a chance for.

Remember Peter Fecher, and others who died excaping tyranny.

May all of the pioneers of freedom forever delight in the loving gaze of God.

    2 Corinthians 3:17

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

How sad that he lost his life at such a young age. Hopefully it will not have been in vain if lessons are learnt from all the deaths like his. May they all R.I.P.

Hi Dwight, I agree with you 100%, we have to do exactly that and and ensure that future generations also learn about the Peter Fechers of this world.

the brave people who sought to escape tyranny are usually often forgotten. Thanx for this post.
Let's hope America does not go down that road

If we do it will be because of our own failure to remember the Peter Fechers of the world.

I remember it well. One of my prized possessions is a small piece of concrete with some paint on it. It was given to me by a friend who had served in Germany. It sits on my desk, under a glass cover so no one takes it by mistake, and reminds me.....

I served in Germany, I was out in 88, I took the Border tour. Kinda frecky watching machine guns track you and the KGB taking your picture. I still look at those photos time to remind me about freedom.

Sad. And liberals want MORE of this communism, and they want it here. History proves that it doesn't work, but they push for it anyway.

I can only imagine how deeply Peter Fecher longed for freedom ! Thank you for memorializing him today, 50 years after he died trying to attain that freedom. May we ALL value our freedom as much as did Peter Fecher !!!

It is strange that little was made of it in our news media, or our government. Yet a little research in a library or the Net shows that it did happen.

These things should not be forgotten .
or the moments when one realizes they are on the wrong side of things.

These stories must be taught to the young so they don't relive the nightmares.
This is what parents and Grandparents were willing to risk to avoid being PROGRESSIVE

The Nazi's had already caused the deaths of most men who could have prevented it. And caused the loss of freedoms and thoughts of resistance that helped the Communist to controll so many.

Not to mention causing the war that led to the occupation and division of Germany.
