May all of the pioneers of freedom forever delight in the loving gaze of God.

Fifty years ago this month a young man died trying to gain freedom from oppression. He was not killed by a soldier or officer of an enemy state. He was killed by his own country men for the crime of trying to leave his city of birth. For the past year citizens of East Berlin and East Germany had been denied the freedom of leaving. Not of entering their State, but of leaving it.
18 year old Peter Fecher was not the first to die just for trying to leave, but he became famous for being one of the first to die tangled in the concertina wire strung along the year old Berlin Wall, and under the watching eyes of Western military guards.
Peter Fecher was just one person who was killed for not submitting to a totalitarian State and philosophy that demands a person do just that. Submitt oneself to its demands and live the life the State and social philosophy requires of you. To become less than your self in service of the State.
Peter Fecher was just 18 years older than myself when he was killed by an East German Border Guard for daring to hope for something better than being a cog in a machine. He would have been 68 now with a full life behind him. Instead his dead or dying imagine is all we have of Peter Fecher to remind us that Freedom and Liberty are worth taking a chance for.
Remember Peter Fecher, and others who died excaping tyranny.

and god damn the DDR and the USSR.
Let's hope America does not go down that road
or the moments when one realizes they are on the wrong side of things.
These stories must be taught to the young so they don't relive the nightmares.
This is what parents and Grandparents were willing to risk to avoid being PROGRESSIVE

he was gunned down by the Vopos, crawled some yards and was left to die in agony,as an "eample" to others, disgusting
Not to mention causing the war that led to the occupation and division of Germany.
