Religious Bigotry Goes Down In Flames In North Dakota

ProudProgressive 2012/06/13 20:46:18

Well at least we know there are still SOME people in this country who respect the Constitution. For now, at least, we are still protected from having religious extremists put their personal views ahead of the protections guaranteed by the Constitution.

Religious Bigotry Goes Down In Flames In North Dakota
June 13, 2012
By Justin Rosario

Last night, North Dakotan residents voted against a conservative initiative by a crushing margin of 2 to 1. The initiative, named the “North Dakota Religious Freedom Amendment: Measure 3″ included language so broad it would allow anyone to ignore almost any law:

“Government may not burden a person’s or religious organization’s religious liberty. The right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a sincerely held religious belief may not be burdened unless the government proves it has a compelling governmental interest in infringing the specific act or refusal to act and has used the least restrictive means to further that interest.”

The amendment was designed to allow conservatives (who else?) to openly discriminate against the LGBTQ community (are you surprised?) but was so vague that it would allow any level of discrimination against any minority at all. It would also allow more cynical “believers” to ignore regular laws like red lights and paying taxes because of their “beliefs.”

As usual, the fanatic bigots of the right see any attempt to hinder their ability to inflict their religion on others as persecution. In reality, religious liberty also includes the liberty to be free from religion. As the country moves closer to the secular nation the Constitution explicitly details, the more power the religious right loses and that is a terrifying prospect for them. Couldn’t happen to a nastier group of people. Congratulations, North Dakota!

This is not a vote for Secularism. This is a vote for Freedom. Anyone can hold any belief they want so long as it does not infringe on another's. Nothing about their thoughts are regulated, only that they must be held to the Law like everyone else.

Congratulations to all the ND voters who defeated this nonsense. The nutcases won't give up, however, with just this defeat, as they still have Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee, maybe even Texas and Indiana in which to further their drift toward anarchy and lunacy. One of their motives is to deny children medical care and vaccinations from polio and other contagious diseases, under the guise, of course, of "God doesn't like that". We probably should be constructing mental hospitals and fenced compounds for these critters rather than prisons for minor drug offenders.

What in God's name is your problem? Right wing bigoted idiots in North Dakota tried to pass a law that put subjective religious beliefs ahead of the United States Constitution, and the good people of North Dakota stopped them from doing it. This has nothing to do with Mormons and nothing to do with Mitt Romney.

Planned Parenthood has as much right as any extremist fundamentalist Christian group to contribute money to the cause. Or, is this a case of right wing extremists wanting to dominate politics?

By interfering with the free exercise of religion for those who arent right wing extremists. By forcing nonbelievers to accept extremist religious doctrine. This is just what the Republicans tried to pull when the Catholic Church attempted to impose its religious dictates on its employees by denying them the free use of their health insurance.

Maybe because they're concerned at the constant efforts by the religious right to deprive women of their constitutional rights and they believe that the Constitution should be protected. And your typical ignorance is showing again with the "Planned Parenthood, whose business is abortion" nonsense. As you and everyone else already know, abortion services are only about 3% of what Planned Parenthood does, and in fact the percentage of PP patients who get abortions is LOWER than the general population.

Answer: The RWNJs, such as Focus on the Family and others who would deny females the right to use contraceptives were pushing the N.D. bill as a "test" of means of circumventing various provisions of public laws regarding health and access to medical care. They would seek to use the law, had it passed, to allow Doctors, Pharmacists, clinics, others to deny various medical treatments and medicines, based on their deceptions and illusions that "God doesn't want us to do that" and similar obsessions. . These nutjobs are skillful, engaging Attorneys and advertising consultants to further their dogmatic delusions.

I wholly agree. Someone last week posted a comment on SH that described asking a RWNJ to deal with reality was like asking a vampire to greet the sunrise. I thought that was a classic piece of
    wisdom.

I hope so. It is so satisfying to drag a RWNJ into the sunlight of facts and the history of their deluded "agendas" and watch them disappear in a puff of smoke as they block any further comments.
I'm blocked by at least thirty of them, which I count as a sort of measure of success.

No spin involved. Sorry, but unlike you I don't believe that "child abuse, domestic violence and the marriage of men to 12-year-old girls" is a valid exercise of "religious freedom".

This bill had nothing whatsoever to do with protecting religious freedom. The purpose of this bill was to allow religious institutions to impose their own views on their employees (a direct VIOLATION of the First Amendment) as well as to protect homophobes who think that gay bashing is a constitutional right.
