The only thing worth recycling is aluminum cans and scrap metal. All the rest burns more fuel to collect and process it than making new stuff. Maybe some stuff on circuit boards too.

Technically, you are not supposed to do that. California has the best recycling program in the Nation. One of the things they found out, however, is that people who live in Nevada and Arizona would save up several hundred pounds of plastic bottles and alumium cans, crush them to take up less space and take them back to the recycling depots where they could get as much as $2 a pound for alumium and as much as $1.75 a pound for the plastic.

The state then enacted a regulation that demanded persons show residence ID (CA DR Lic or CA ID) before they could be paid for the material being recycled. They went one step further by linking the payouts of the recycling depots with the Franchise Tax Board and sent income tax bills to people who did not declare the income on their state taxes with California.

In California, recycling is BIG business and the state sponsoned program became a secondary underground economy which was not being taxed.

Not all recyclables are recycled. Some take more money and energy to recycle than to make new ones. I recycle, I hate waste but we need to use our heads. How much gas will you be burning to bring how many recyclables and how many of those recyclables will be recycled?

That depends on how close you are to the State line, and how much they pay you for the stuff at the other end.
