Recruiters Looking for Hires on Facebook: Is Your Profile Page Employer Friendly?

You!

Get rid of those topless, beer bong pictures. And while you're at it, the blonde jokes, those disses on your college professors and late-night hook-up stories should probably be scrubbed as well. That is, if you're interested in, you know, getting a job.

With unemployment still stuck at a nagging nine percent, many companies have frozen hiring, but some of the ones who are looking for fresh ideas are using Facebook's 750-million-plus user base as a place to find their next hire.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the use of Facebook as a recruitment tool is growing, with some recruiters all but giving up their spending on traditional job boards that charge a few hundred dollars per posting. And while popular sites like LinkedIn have a more comprehensive resume database, candidates value referrals from their Facebook connections more.

The only problem is that many Facebook users overshare and post sometimes risqué pictures on their sites that may turn recruiters off.

ACK! I have dirty song videos up there! Not no but hell no you can't hire me based on my FB page!! Think of the curse words you'd see?! O_O
I don't think that's fair though. That's like an employer following you around on your day off and depending on your behavior outside of work you get to keep your job. Why do I have to be a prim and proper on my toes goody two shoes at all times for fear that my boss may be around the corner tallying my faux pais, from bad language to weird and adult sayings?

Kind of average. I don't tend to post too much for those for specific reasons. But every once in a while I get to slip a dirty word, discriminating sounding remark, or an inappropriate picture. FB's been made for friends to share experiences, jokes and such. It's kinda personal. Why the hell should employers invade this area? It's the same as if your boss would be sneaking in to the parties where you go on weekends, to spy after you.

On the other hand, maybe it will make the employers see that everyone's a sinner on that or another level, and people won't have to be two faced anymore.

Still the privacy thing nags me.

I'm not on often, but there's nothing on my Facebook profile that isn't public knowledge, and I don't even think there's a photo of me in an uncovered bathing suit, nevermind anything truly inappropriate.

My page is pretty employer-friendly, and I'm hoping it's college-friendly as well! Knowing that nothing on the internet is private, I thought I might as well make an adequate impression on whomever's viewing my information. I don't think it hurts that a lot of my friends feel the same way.

Doing a google search for new hires should be commonplace, the same as running a credit check and a background search. If you would not want someone to see something - do not post it publicly, and yes the internet is public.

It has a cartoon character on it. So unless they're looking to hire Pinkie Pie for catering, I doubt they'll take it seriously.

NO EMPLOYERS BUSINESS. ITS INVASION OF PRIVACY PERIOD> They want to do that then we get to put spy cameras in every room and vehicle they own or rent. If there are any mess ups at all by them or any of their friends or kids or kids friends then they do not get to keep their job or get hired. Its not a one way street.

What privacy do you have left? The Government has the right to tap your phone lines, they can invade your home if they wish, they can detain you without cause indefinitely. There is not much privacy left.

And anything you put online that others can see is not private. Facebook is a public social network. If you want to record private thoughts, I guess a journal or a diary is the most private thing left around.

And the only reason ANY of this happens is because YOU didn't organize with ME and others to STOP this from happening. We have to STAND UP and tell them NO and pull them out of office and throw them in jail for what they are doing but WE THE PEOPLE need to quit sitting on the couch and DO.

I could not agree more with you my friend.
We the people do indeed need to begin to get active! We do need to organize, and I am more than happy to be a part of that.

Then put a camera into their lives. They have NO right to check your credit rating as if that says how good an employee you would be and NO right to spy on you off their property which is what they are doing. And they do not have the right to pass off their morality off on you. All against the constitution, morality and ethics.

It is just another way to impose 'correct thinking' on us. Threaten fire or not hire because they don't think like mind numbed robots.

Nothing bad on my page but I think it would be clear to any viewer that I have a liberal progressive mind set. If that's a problem for them, I wouldn't want to work for them any way.

And should that keep you out of work or get you fired.? NO but it can. Who is to say what they will use against you or interp. the way they want to to get rid of you.
  • Pat Joey 2011/08/17 21:48:09
    Pat
Yup, you're right! If a place wants to get rid of you there are a lot of legal ways to do it. They don't need to use a Facebook page.
