Rave this: If you think the Demacrat controlled Labor Unions, had anything to do with all the manufacturing jobs going overseas.

Of course it is a contributing factor. It isn't the only factor and it may not even be the most significant factor, but it is clearly one of the most significant factors. There can be no doubt. I would also observe that unions tend to control democrat politicians more than the democrat politicians control the unions. Democrats populate the unions and their leadership is generally dominated by democrats, but I believe the union influence is greater on the democratic party than vice versa.

Because nobody will buy the stuff you make using costly labor? If you can't sell your product, then you can't afford to pay people and buy the raw materials and operate factories to make it. It is only natural, but people want to make higher wages and buy things at lower prices. Otherwise, Wal-Mart wouldn't be so successful. What is a living wage, anyway. One can live on almost nothing. What you really want is a lifestyle wage, not a living wage. Why not make the minimum wage $1000/hr? Then we would all be rich, right? (You can try to answer that last question if you want, but it was intended to be a rhetorical question, no reply possible or required.)

a living wage is a fiction as the market will always adjust itself. Could pay everyone $1,000,000 a year and in almost no time you will find that $1,000,000 wont buy much of anything.

Exactly! We have as many billionaires today as we had millionaires 100 years ago or so and millionaires today are a dime a dozen. But the dollar has lost most of its value in that 100 years so while I'd like to be a millionaire, it isn't the same anymore.

Wrong. Since 1980, about 5 percent of annual national income has shifted from the middle class to the nation’s richest households. That means the wealthiest 5,934 households last year enjoyed an additional $650 billion -- about $109 million apiece -- beyond what they would have had if the economic pie had been divided as it was in 1980, according to Census Bureau data.

"But people want to make higher wages and buy things at lower prices." Don't generalize, I know many people who will not shop at Wal Mart and who are willing to pay a higher price to get quality. Right now it is very hard to buy anything that is made here. Take a look at 30 - 40 years ago, people could have a home, car, and send their child to college on one income. A person could go to the local mom and pop store and life was ok. Today you have the big box stores that took over the american dream.

Yep.... and then we had LBJ and the Great Society, ramped up spending on welfare, social security, Medicare/Medicaid, housing assistance and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, increased government spending for college assistance and public schools and on and on. Maybe that had some small part in it.

Unions had their usefulness at one time, but are no longer necessary to protect workers rights. They are just like everyone else when they get greedy.

People can't afford to pay 5 dollars for what they can buy for 1 dollar that will last just as long.

    That's a no-brainer.
"Give us more money or we'll strike!" The company makes a lot of compromises but the unions still keep coming back for more. So the company takes a look at the big board of profit, weighs the unions and says, "I guess I'll go overseas were I won't have this problem anymore."
    Duh!

Collective bargaining tends to replace employment contracts based on merit with ones based on tenure. This has a negative impact on productivity in many cases, regardless of what compensation has been negotiated collectively. As long as union members take pride in their work and bring forward new ideas to cut costs and improve quality, businesses will succeed with unions. But when union members begin to focus on how much they can get and how little they have to work to get it, the system inevitably fails. Businesses that are forced to accept unions have no other option but to pick up their shops and move somewhere else. Management of businesses have a lot of blame to share when they meekly accept CBAs that threaten their company with bankruptcy.
