People should pay for government similarly to how they pay for goods and services in the private sector. They should pay for the value of what they receive. Everyone should receive protection of their individual rights, so everyone should pay the same amount for much of the service. Protection of property rights is the one service that would scale with wealth, but that would scale only proportionally. So, there would be a head tax and say a 15% or less income tax. Of course, this would cause the people to push hard for a greatly scaled down government, since they would be paying their fair share!

The lower 50 percent of the population has only 13 percent of the income, and an even smaller share of the wealth. They still pay plenty of other taxes. I don't see this as being a good idea, as it would actively impinge on people's ability to survive (We argue about the taxes on people earning more than 250,000 (Now higher in the 400,000s of course) but at least for them their ability to eat and live isn't threatened by taxes. This would not generate much in the way of new revenue (Probably less than the slightly increased revenue from higher tax rates for upper income earners that is), as well as being regressive, actively hurting a very large group of people who simply can't afford it.

It is also ironic that conservatives achieved on of their goals and now don't like it. Lower taxes for the population at large, people on the lower end don't pay as much in income taxes as they used to.... Though again, they pay other taxes such as payroll taxes, state taxes, sales taxes, property taxes ect ect.

It doesn't make sense to tax the unemployed, mostly because unemployed either have little or no money to pay the tax or they are on welfare (in which case the American public would be taxing its own spending, not to mention how it would make the welfare system far more useless than it already is). By taxing a people that can't ever pay for it what you are actually doing is creating a policy that allows the government to arrest and exploit the poorest of the poor through indebtedness. You should never loan money to bad spenders for the same reason you should never tax people with no money: It creates further debt and waste.

Income tax is wrong, and should be abolished. When you work you're trading you labor for money, or in other words you are bartering your labor for money. It'd be like bartering your labor for a banana.

I disagree that the income tax is wrong. What is wrong is that the employer has the right to set wages.

No, the employer is a private entity, if the worker doesn't like the wage, he can leave. Eventually when enough people leave then market demand will dictate that wages will go up.

How about $500 million annually from MediCare which the Obama administration totally ignored. One half billion per year in waste, fraud and abuse.

Edit: I have to add that MediCare has been bleeding millions for years because its a government run program and isnt necessarily a product of one party or another, but I remember Barry talking about stopping it.
Another one is welfare. The government's who administer welfare rarely do any follow up with the recipients or raise a red flag at generational welfare takers.
Another one is SSDI....we have more than ever now. The government just makes it too easy to get taxpayer money without much to prevent the fraudulent claims.
One more....unemployment insurance. If that isnt a government "gimme" I dont know what is.

New a medical provider who said the same thing till I asked him what should they do die. Since they would if they didn't get his services he had no answer.

You and I have money deducted directly or indirectly from our checks for unemployment insurance. We are owed the benefits if that problem befalls us. It is no different from expecting a fire insurance company from paying up when there is a fire.

u still get taxed if youre rich and sit on your ass, your ass-sets that accrue interest are still taxed, because it is income. so not choosing to work doesnt mean u dont pay taxes so my brain doesnt quite wrap around this rave

There should be a flat tax, like 12% or something. This "progressive" tax, REGRESSING us to the days of the USSR is just a political tool. The "make them pay their "fair share" and show them!" Is just base "get even with them-ism." It does not generate more revenue, it is proven to generate less. But then that makes it easier to come around and raise the tax rates more later on... To be "fair," and that is a subjective term, it should be the same across the board. EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW. What would be even better is to abolish the entire IRS-KGB system and have the states collect the money and give the general government what they think it needs!

The states should be abolished. People hardly know who their state representatives are. We are citizens of the US not of some administrative unit called a state.

Ability to pay is the fairest and most efficient way of taxing. Why should someone who can't support themselves have to pay taxes? We'd just have to give the money back to them anyhow.
