Exactly, NOBODY should be held to the mercy of some brain-dead Mayors or Governors acting like King Biscuit and dictating what businesses are allowed to operate within the city, county or state limits.

Hopefully these idiots got a taste today, of what happens when you play games with the people and try to politicize a non issue. Holy backfire, Batman.
Chick-fil-A Day kicked their butts and it will continue until they stop screeching.

Perhaps I should restate my my comment:

No conservative government official said that businesses shouldn't open another chain in any area because of their stance on gay marriage or whatever.

If any anti-gay marriage organizations did this, they were private organizations.

They have the right to their opinion. I have the right to boycott. But if they want to write checks to organizations that try and suppress equal rights, I do not stand with them.

It's not supressinge equal rights. Marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman. Why is being married so important anyway? Isn't it enough to just know that you both love eachother and don't need a certificate to prove it? <-- I can't emphasize this enough.
I think gay people could have the same exact thing; same ceremony, same rights, all of that, but just call it something else. You coud still say they're married, but it would be a different name. Otherwise you're changing what marriage is. (yes, being married is different from marriage.) There will be people on both sides who don't like it, but otherwise I don't see how this can work without lots of.. Disagreement/ fighting.
Or, lol, go to New York! You can get married there just like that *!

“Between a man and a woman” by who’s definition? What about those who get a sex-change or hermaphrodites?

Marriage is a contract. Gays want the opportunity to have that same contract. A civil union is not the same. There are over a thousand legal protections and many benefits that one gets with marriage. If you are not married you may not be able to visit your partner in the hospital. There is no child custody, adoption, or parenting rights. In the event of the adoptee’s passing, there is no guarantee that the other partner gets custody. There is not immunity from testifying in court. There are no tax exemptions or social security benefits. The list goes on. They are denied rights that legally married couples appreciate. That is suppressing equal rights.

Thats a well known definition. It was gay people who started to slowly change it to fit their needs. You can believe whatever you want, and no one can stop you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Hermaphrodites and people going through a sex change can get married (-_-) hermaphrodites are girls with male genitalia, too. They are still women.. People going through a sex change will be either a man or a woman when they're finished anyway, and they do it to be with the opposite sex as a man and a woman.
That's why I said to allow the same rights as marriage, but just give it a different name. You didn't have to list all of these rights because I already said they would have the same exact rights as any other married couple.

Well known or often said definition? It does not make it the definition. Where is this definition that you've heard?

If gays can have all of the same rights as those who are married they should be able to get married. If it's the same thing why call it something different?

Because its changing what marriage is. (-_-) Otherwise these groups will keep fighting and fighting and I don't think it's worth it.
Btw, it's well know and often said. Even my uncle who is gay says that's what it is, but he doesn't try to change it. He just wants some form of ceremony that means they're together forever; he said the fact that it's not called marriage shouldn't be important if they get the same rights.
Ugh. I know you'll never change your mind on any of this, neither will any of these other people, so there's no point in bothering to talk about it. We should just take a vote to end it all.

But marriage has evolved over time especially in the USA, for the better! There once were no age restrictions. My grandmother married at 14 to my grandfather who was 20+ years her senior. It used to be that you could not marry outside of ones caste, social class, race and ethnicity. Marriage used to be a business deal. You pay an agreed amount for your bride and the bride had little rights. It used to be families arranged marriage between couple and you often married your first cousin. I am grateful there has been an evolution of marriage. I certainly would not have just celebrated my 18th anniversary if these were the laws as they would have forbidden me to marry my husband. We would have broken nearly all of those laws.

Look at it this way. Marriage is simply a legal and social contract between two persons that bonds their lives legally.

I know you will probably not change your mind as well. I can still try ;)

You seem like a very reasonable, logical person. :) I understand what youre saying, I'm just in favor of traditional marriage. I believe gay people should have the same rights, but I don't want it to be called marriage because it's just what I believe. I think gay people should be able to have a social and legal contract very similar to traditional marriage that gives them the same rights and lets them have a ceremony if they choose, but since it's not traditional marriage I think it could be given a different title. My uncle is gay, and he believes the same thing because it's just part of what we believe.

I personally believe that the owner has a right to speak his mind. Then again everyone does. I might not agree with what he is saying but that is okay. I do feel that businesses have a right to their opinion on what they believe but they also need to be aware that they might lose customers' based on it. Not saying it's right by any means, but that comes with the territory. But obviously he feels that strongly and doesn't mind making it public and there are those who either agree or disagree with his beliefs and will choose to either still patronize his establishments or go elsewhere.

Well, I disagree slightly. I think there are TWO issues -- the anti-gay-marriage AND the freedom of speech.

Clearly, the freedom of speech issue outranks the other -- by a long shot -- but the other is still real.

So... even though I am more of a liberal than not, I strongly oppose what the Boston and Chicago mayors said. Any government official who tries to deny business permits to a company based on what the company owner says or what the company does with its profits is, well, violating the First Amendment. There is nothing else to say about it.

Freedom of Speech applies to all sorts of speech, even speech you disagree with. Actually, it applies MOST to speech you disagree with.

That said, it is also wrong to deny gays the right to marry, and I oppose anyone who tries to block their right to marry. I might even consider boycotting their establishment (though it is moot in my case, since I don't think there are any Chik-Fil-A restaurants anywhere near me...).

BUT... I cannot accept any government official telling the company they aren't allowed in city. That is very much more important here.

It is also probably moot. Blocking CFA from a city for protected speech is so obviously a violation of the Constitution that even if the mayors try to carry through with their threats, the denial won't hold up in court. So CFA will ultimately be allowed to build in whatever cities they desire -- including Boston and Chicago.

Exactly. The First Amendment wasn't created to protect "love speech" but to protect people's rights to make claims that other people disagree with. It was designed to protect people from what others may view as "hate speech."
So hate speech, to a limited extent, is covered by the first amendent.

As long as it doesn't directly incite a crime, it needs to be protected. The test of its power is how well it protects people you detest to say things you cannot stand.

If you think CFA missionaries are in Uganda "Schooling" them to hate lgbt's with donated money from Chick-Fil-A...The Fact is ..Nobody said it was cool to be gay in most of the world ..that's the problem with believing Propaganda over facts..The facts are the majority of 57 African nations (38 countries) don't even hide the fact that THEY WILL KILL YOU IF YOU ARE GAY...since always..(without the help of the CFA I might add)...the rest openly discriminate...Remember Lot,Sodom and Gomorrah from the Bible?..Well Islamic Law states that Muhammad as having prescribed the death penalty for both the active and the passive partner: "Whoever you find committing the sin of the people of Lut (Lot), kill them, both the one who does it and the one to whom it is done."
The overall moral or theological principle is that a person who performs such actions (luti) challenges the harmony of God's creation, and is therefore a revolt against God..So you can add 50 Muslim countries to that will kill list... do you see a pattern here? ..do you think the CFA is funding those countries too?..
Have you seen a Lgbt pride parade in Russia ?. do you think that Russians not accepting them is a new phenomenon?.. Notice Nobody helping that guy gettin' kicked...think the CFA is somehow behind that too?...
