Republican Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois is under fire this Fourth of July for complaining that his Democratic challenger, a veteran who lost her legs in Iraq, talks too much about her military service.

Tammy Duckworth, a Black Hawk pilot, was awarded the Purple Heart after her helicopter was hit by an RPG in 2004. She lost her legs and some use of her right arm in the explosion.

At a town hall meeting on Sunday, Walsh complained that he is “running against a woman who, I mean my God, [military service] is all she talks about.”

The first-term congressman also suggested that Duckworth is not a “true hero,” while comparing her unfavorably to Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Typical -- Republicans made a hero of George Bush who was never in a combat zone and a traitor of John Kerry who was. It depends on who they are running against. Winning is all that matters and nothing is beneath a politician who craves the office. Why? Because they all leave Congess very wealthy because ofthe contacts they have made and the people they had access to. If all else fails get a ghost writer and do a book. Then appear endlessly on the talk show circuit to get it sold.

JOE WALSH IS WRONG FOR OUR COUNTRY! He is an embarassment for Illinois and he and his kind have nothing constructive or positive to bring to the country. He is collecting a paycheck for running his ignorant mouth. I cannot believe that at least a few republicans are embarassed by his stupidity and buffoonary. I can't stand this fool.

Actually, he wasn't wrong, at least as far as any information on this thread demonstrates. He was, however, stupid, which frequently is much more fatal.

you seem to have completely misconstrued my response. having two legs blown off does not mean everyone should vote for her. she needs to prove herself a worthy candidate, but lately all she waves in everyone faces is that she lost 2 legs in the war....she really has nothing good to bring to the table. I feel for her, but I would not vote for someone out of sympathy. this is politics after all.
