I think time and money would be better spent finding ways to improve things in the world so that people would not feel coming here illegally was the best way to help themselves and their families.

Also, I see a lot of assumptions that illegals are all Mexican... I can't find decent recent numbers but Mexican illegals seem to make up about 60 percent of our illegal population. And their numbers are dropping according to recent studies.

I used to be driven by the usual bull but I had two things happen to me that changed my mind about the issue...

One was an illegal family I lived next door too back in Michigan.. One Parent came legally, the other didn't. They wanted their kids to have a better life. They both tried to come in legally and one made it but they couldn't afford the fees for the other. They were wonderful people and great parents and neighbors, I was sorry to move away.

The second was a really long talk I had with an immigration attorney here in Vegas just after I moved here.. we met at a anti war rally. We talked for a long time and she told me about the long waiting lists and the bribes and fees that so many Mexicans have to pay to get in legally and that many just can't afford it and I started thinking about that family so many years ago.. I really learned to understand what these people are up against when they want to follow the rules and how the system can feel more like a punishment to them.

I learned to understand and feel compassion. Not everyone has the chance to have those experiences, and some folks don't want them, but I feel I was lucky. I had my eyes opened.

Thank you, polkastria. I learned in Brazil that, although many of us Americans seem to be brought up to be narrow and prejudice, we were not hateful; we are just inexperienced and unaware. Fortunately, we do have a commpassionate streak in us. We must simply experience reality and embrace it.

Some of us cannot get past the tendency embedded in human nature to react to cognitive dissonance by angrily rejecting any verifiable fact or truth that challenges our treasured prejudiced, biases, and resentments.

It is easy to hang on to fear and hate. As long as people choose fear, they will not be open to real change in any other direction.
