Not enough info to choose. And the quote doesn't say anything about "safety" -- it refers to "the benefit of all." That's not necessarily safety-related.

Normally freedom is more important -- but in times of emergency, the needs (real or perceived) of an entity may trump individual rights. I was once stuck in a town in Nebraska for 3 days during a "blizzard-like" storm. I-80 was blocked off, and so were the old E/W state highways. I would have taken my chances to get home, but I wasn't allowed. Does anyone think Nebraska is a nanny-state?

There IS NO SAFETY without Freedom. Authoritarians would LOVE for us to give up our freedoms so they can 'protect' us. If you can't protect yourself, you're not human. You're cattle.

One is not more important than the other. But when we relinquish our freedom in the name of safety we increase the number of our threats. Those who would do us harm because of our freedoms and those who would do us harm in the mindless pusuit of enforcing the safety measures. Courage is the freedom to face down the threats and not let them incite reactionary measures which would ultimately limit our freedom. If being a martyr is an honorable thing. I think I'd rather become a martyr for freedom and live life openly rather than as a coward sitting behind a continually shrinking safety net.

No one can guarantee our safety, either from within or without, but they sure can take away our freedom, especially if we let them.

Without freedom there can be no safety because government always fills the void and protects itself violently from uprising. We have seen it time and time again throughout history.

I'm not talking about you sacrificing yourself to protect your nation; you choose to do so. I am talking about something more like the government forcing you to do so or sending you to prison. There's a huge difference.

Well in that case there are many people who feel one is better than the other and both sides have arguments that make sense. But as for America freedom used to always be our policy and I don't see why it should'nt be again. But there are far to many large controling factors today that make freedom almost impossible. That and considering every generation gets more rude, and more stupid I don't think that the next generation has any idea about any of this and the sad part is they don't even want to learn. Sorry if I rambled.

All the dog and pony shows at the airport does not impress me or anyone with extensive military or security background. If any terrorists wants to screw things up it is extremely easy to do. The Patriot acts are acts of a scared nation/politicians.
